After spending 10 years in north London and winning his first piece of silverware last season after lifting the Europa League, Son has announced his plans to leave the club before the new Premier League campaign.

Mikey Moore and Alejo Veliz have already left on loan ahead of the 2025/26 season, and alongside Son, another highly-rated Tottenham gem is also set to depart.

Agreement reached for Jamie Donley to leave Tottenham on loan

According to reports from Lilywhite Rose, relayed by Tottenham News, Spurs have reached an agreement with an unnamed Championship club for Jamie Donley, with a deal set to go through following the club’s pre-season tour of South Korea.

The 20-year-old has featured under Thomas Frank in parts of pre-season, and there were claims that the attacking midfielder could be a part of the first-team plans in 25/26.

However, he now looks set to head to the second tier on a season-long loan after an impressive spell with Leyton Orient in League One last year.

Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens loved what he saw from Donley last season, who stunned Manchester City in the FA Cup with a long-range effort.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Jamie, he is a talented player. He’s come into us and he is a talented boy, everyone can see that. When you watch him in training and you see the talent he has, he has every opportunity to be whatever he wants to be.

“We have been good in the last 14 or 15 games and he has been outstanding for us, he is an exceptional player at this level and will go on to bigger and better things.”

It now appears he is set for a step up into the Championship, and in 12 months time, could be pushing for a spot in Frank’s side.

Explained: Why Tottenham players have small three-digit numbers on back of shirts

Tottenham players have been assigned small three-digit numbers, which are printed on the back of their shirts. The numbers are unique to each player and they have been sporting them since 2023. After finishing 17th in the Premier League in a dismal 2024-25 campaign, Spurs have made a strong start to the new season, sitting third in the table after five matches.

Spurs players wearing unique three-digit numbers

Every Spurs player has been given a unique three-digit number, which is printed just below the collar on the back of their shirts (except summer signing Kota Takai, who has yet to be assigned one). The players have been carrying those numbers on their shirts since their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in 2023.

AdvertisementAFPWhy Tottenham stars have small numbers on their back

The small three-digit numbers on the back of the players' shirts are called "legacy numbers". The numbers are assigned once they make their competitive debuts for the Premier League side. Tottenham started the initiative to commemorate the contributions of every player who has represented the club.

Simons & Kolo Muani latest to be assigned legacy numbers

New signings Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani were the latest Spurs stars to be assigned the "legacy numbers". While Simons was given 898 on his debut in their recent win over West Ham, Kolo Muani got 899 when making his bow in their Champions League clash against Villarreal.

Thunder one step away from BBL title as Billings, spinners shine

They’ll meet Hurricanes in title match after restricting Sixers to 151, and chasing the target down in scrappy Challenger

David Warner will have the chance to lead Sydney Thunder to their first BBL title in nine years, a season after they finished with the wooden spoon, after his side held their nerve in a scrappy Challenger final derby against Sydney Sixers to win by four wickets, with seven balls to spare. The experience of Sam Billings proved vital in the outcome as he nursed Thunder to their target amid a regular loss of wickets. With another 18 runs needed off the remaining 13 balls, Billings broke the tension with a huge leg-side six off Hayden Kerr.Thunder had been excellent in the field, with only a sixth-wicket stand of 56 from 34 balls between Jordan Silk and Ben Dwarshuis hauling Sixers as far as 151. Although Tom Andrews was their only spinner in the wickets – his brace came in the space of three balls – Thunder’s spinners were otherwise again very effective. The ten overs between Andrews, Tanveer Sangha and Chris Green cost just 66 runs on a surface that offered assistance. In reply, young English legspinner Jafer Chohan was very impressive, but Sixers did not have the volume of spin overs they were able to turn to as Thunder set up a final showdown with Hobart Hurricanes on Monday.Jason Sangha opens upThunder have tried a variety of opening combinations this season, although some of it has been out of their hands due to injury to Cameron Bancroft, and a Test call-up for Sam Konstas. For the Challenger, they opted for Jason Sangha, alongside Warner. Jason Sangha was playing in just his second game of the season, and started with a bang by taking 14 runs off the first over.Warner then scooped his first ball from Kerr for six, and Thunder were off to a flyer. But he bunted a catch to mid-on in the third over. Jason Sangha, meanwhile, had reached 30 off 19 balls at the other end, when he slog-swept Chohan to deep midwicket, as the game really started to tighten up.Matthew Gilkes was run-out, although Jack Edwards thought he had broken the stumps with his hands•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

A zing-bail run-outWhen on 3, Thunder’s Matthew Gilkes was given a life as he lofted Ben Manenti’s first ball to long-off, where Lachlan Shaw, who has produced some spectacular fielding in the competition, spilled a regulation catch in front of the Thunder dugout. From there, Gilkes built steadily, including landing a huge six into the Members Stand off Mitch Perry. But Gilkes was then at the centre of a borderline third-umpire decision.Coming back for a second run after playing towards deep third, Gilkes was beaten by a superb throw from Kerr. But Jack Edwards thought he had broken the stumps with his hands. However, after multiple replays, the third umpire Phillip Gillespie ruled that it was the ball that had fully dislodged the bail so Gilkes was ruled out for 26. The stump could be seen moving before the ball made contact, but, crucially, the zing bails had not lit up, so they had not been fully dislodged. Without zing bails, it was unlikely to have been given out. That is when Sixers put the squeeze on. Hugh Weibgen under-edged on to the stumps against Kerr, and Thunder couldn’t find the big over that would likely have killed the game off sooner. Chohan was superb, as he had been in the Qualifier final, and did not concede a boundary until the final delivery of his spell.Thunder held the power surge back until the 18th over, and though George Garton fell swinging across the line, Billings and Nathan McAndrew finished the job with some breathing space.Jordan Silk’s 43 took Sixers to 151•Getty Images

Tanveer’s fortune; Andrews’ doubleAmid the loss of Edwards and Kurtis Patterson inside the powerplay, which ended with Sixers just 23 for 2, it was a struggle for the hosts. Josh Philippe, who had been moved down to No. 3 after having not reached double figures in his last five innings, and Moises Henriques, were starting to engineer a platform when Henriques nailed a return catch to Tanveer, who dropped it, but deflected the ball on to the stumps with Philippe out of his ground. Then Andrews, who has had a huge impact on Thunder’s run to the finals, further dented Sixers’ middle order with two wickets in the 13th over. Firstly, Henriques was brilliant caught at cover by Garton, diving full length to his left. Then Shaw picked out Warner on the off side, with the Thunder captain rewarded for aggressive fielding placement. Somewhat surprisingly, that was Andrews’ last over of the innings.Silk’s forlorn finalsSilk was superb in Hobart on Monday, when he had nearly hauled Sixers over the line with 57. Against Sixers in the Challenger, he had to do another rebuilding job from 76 for 5. He broke the shackles with a sweep for six off Tanveer Sangha, and cleared the rope again in the power surge against Wes Agar. The surge brought 20 runs from the two overs, before Dwarshuis was able to find his range against McAndrew in the 18th over, which cost 19 runs. It gave Sixers something to defend, although it wasn’t quite enough in the end.

"See you soon" – Newcastle star gutted after suffering Liverpool "setback"

One Newcastle United star has been left gutted after what he describes as a personal “setback” in the 3-2 Premier League loss to Liverpool.

Howe addresses Isak’s Newcastle future after Liverpool defeat

Much of the focus around Newcastle’s meeting with Liverpool on Monday evening centred around the future of Alexander Isak, with the forward once again absent from Eddie Howe’s side.

The Reds have been looking to sign the striker this summer and have even had a £110m bid turned down by those at St James’ Park, with Isak looking to force a move to Anfield.

On the pitch, Newcastle battled back from Anthony Gordon’s red card and were 2-0 down to Arne Slot’s side, but goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Will Osula looked to have won the Magpies a point before 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha came off the bench to snatch victory deep into stoppage time.

Asked about Isak after the defeat, Howe admitted he and his team need “clarity” regarding the striker’s future.

“I’ve not been party to talks on this for a long time now. I’ve been preparing the team and giving all my energy to the players that want to play for Newcastle. I think that is where my energy is best put at the moment. We want clarity, we want to move forward, we want the narrative to change because we’re in the start of the season now.

“We’re into the action and we’ve got to get results, and we’ve got to try to focus on what we can control. We’ve given two really, really good performances, we’ve ended up with one point. That’s tough for us to take, especially in this moment where you’re looking for positives to cling to. But we battle through and we now go on to Leeds.”

Meanwhile, taking to social media platform Instagram, Gordon apologised to his Newcastle team-mates and Virgil van Dijk for the challenge which cost him a red card in Monday night’s defeat.

Sent off after a VAR review shortly before half-time, Gordon said:

Starting in a central role with Isak still out, Gordon will now miss games against Leeds United, Wolves and Bournemouth, returning to Premier League action against Arsenal at the end of September.

Investors face live auction for in-demand Hundred franchises

Oval Invincibles and Birmingham Phoenix will be first teams for sale on January 30

Nagraj Gollapudi27-Jan-2025The Hundred’s sales process is approaching completion, with the ECB inviting prospective investors in the eight franchises to submit final bids over the next two weeks, starting with two teams – Oval Invincibles and Birmingham Phoenix – as soon as Thursday (January 30).On Sunday, the ECB shared the formula for the final round of bids with the group of investors who were shortlisted by the eight host venues for 49% stakes in their franchise. A live, virtual auction process will be held for the franchises where more than two investors remain in the process. For those where only two parties remain, both will submit sealed bids.ESPNcricinfo has learned that two-time men’s Hundred winners Invincibles and Phoenix will be the first two franchises to go on sale, as part of the ECB’s third and final round of the bidding process. As per the schedule, the final round of bidding will be conducted online between January 30 and February 10.It is understood that the Invincibles and Phoenix bids will be held at separate times, but both on the same day. London Spirit and Welsh Fire will be put up for bidding on Friday (January 31). Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers and Trent Rockets are slated for Monday, February 3, while Southern Brave are listed as the last franchise up for bidding, on February 10.How will the winning bid be decided? In its latest communication to the shortlisted investors, the ECB is understood to have said it was “revising” the approach in the final round to pick the winning bid for franchises where there are more than two investors in the fray. In such a case, a live auction will be conducted to pick the winner. The investors will make incremental bids online, but, importantly, the starting bid, the ECB said, will be above the “agreed” floor price or reserve price. The winning bidder will emerge once the rival investors drop out. For franchises with only two investors on the shortlist, each will need to make a sealed bid with the winner determined based on the highest entry value.Successful bidders at this final stage will enter into a period of exclusivity with their respective host venue. Both parties will negotiate long-form agreements with the ECB, a process which is likely to take several weeks. Even if deals are completed before the Hundred starts in August, the 2025 season is expected to be a transitional year with no changes to team names or kits, for example. The ECB added that the roster for the sale of the teams was sequenced in such a manner that both the investor and the host county were best placed to land their “preferred partner”.Manchester United co-owner eyes London SpiritLondon Spirit, the defending champions in the women’s Hundred, are expected to emerge as the most valuable franchise in the process. Their home ground is Lord’s and their host club is MCC, who have stated their intention to remain majority shareholders in the franchise after their members voted to accept a 51% stake late last year.ESPNcricinfo understands that Lancer Capital, owned by Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer, is on the shortlist for a stake in the Spirit. Glazer made his first successful foray in the T20 franchise circuit when he bought Desert Vipers in the UAE-based ILT20 in 2021, having previously missed out on an IPL franchise when the league expanded.Glazer will be vying for a 49% stake in Spirit with Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Group, which owns Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, and a consortium of global tech giants including the chief executives of Google and Microsoft. Cain International, who have also been linked with a bid for a stake in the Spirit, were contacted for comment.ESPNcricinfo has also learned that Capri Global Holdings, an India-based non-banking financial company, is on the shortlist for Welsh Fire. The company owns Sharjah Warriorz in ILT20 and the UP Warriorz in the WPL. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings, who had originally shown interest in the process, have since opted out.The ECB hopes to raise a minimum of £350 million from the sale process, which will be split between all 18 first-class counties, MCC and the recreational game. Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, said last month: “The aim is to raise significant investment that’s going into the game. My hope is this will recapitalise the county game for the next 20-25 years.”

Length, more than pace, key to Australia spinners' success, says Smith

It was the length Australian spinners bowled that helped them take 20 Sri Lanka wickets so easily. This is what the stand-in captain Steven Smith felt after his team inflicted a record innings-and-242-run victory on Sri Lanka in the first Test. The Sri Lanka batters struggled substantially against the spinners, losing 17 wickets to them in Galle. Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann took 9 for 149 in the match, to top the wicket-chart for the series so far.”I just think he bowls nice balls consistently,” Smith said of Kuhnemann. “Left-arm spinners to right-hand batters – it just works in the subcontinent.Related

  • Sri Lanka turn up, but do little else in Galle mismatch

“He did a wonderful job when he bowled in India [where he took nine wickets across five innings in early 2023], and he bowled beautifully again in this game. It’s a pretty good effort.”Australia, unusually, played only one frontline seam bowler. Mitchell Starc has an outstanding record in Sri Lanka, but spin nevertheless claimed a bulk of the Sri Lanka wickets to fall in this Test, leaving just three for Starc.”I thought all the spinners worked really well together, and that’s the beauty of having three frontline spin bowlers,” Smith said. “You can sort of chop and change them, and as soon as one’s not looking quite as effective, and the batter gets a bit of a read on them or they get a little bit tired, you put the next one on and wait to see what’s happening.”But, while Australia’s spinners took 17 wickets in the Test, Sri Lanka’s spinners managed only the six.”For me, for [the] spinners it’s more length than pace,” Smith said. “If you can consistently hit a good length, then regardless of what’s going on, you’re going to be in play. If you can get the ball to skid or one to rag – the length where they’re lunging forward and can’t get back to it or they can’t drive at that length. If you’re hitting that consistently, your pace is kind of irrelevant, I think.”Australia scored 654 for 6 declared in the first innings. This is generally a position from which teams tend not to lose, and Australia felt especially confident, considering how quickly the pitch was deteriorating.”I think they lost 7 for 17 [7 for 15] across the day today at one point. It was one of those where it was really tough to start on, and as soon as we got a breakthrough, we always felt we could get another one quickly.”

Bad news for Danilo: Rangers eyeing "exciting" £5.6m CF who's Igamane 2.0

Rangers supporters have certainly enjoyed their Europa League nights in recent seasons and, well, their side appear destined to return to their favourite competition.

On a truly disastrous Tuesday night at Ibrox, the Light Blues were demolished by Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League play-off, three down inside 20 minutes, before Danilo’s goal from close range shortly after the interval reduced the deficit, but could not spark a full-scale comeback.

The Brazilian was leading the line due to an injury suffered by Cyriel Dessers, while Hamza Igamane was only deemed fit enough to come off the bench on the hour mark, given that he’s still recovering from an injury of his own.

Nevertheless, both Dessers and Igamane have been strongly linked with moves away throughout the summer, the Light Blues rejecting a bid from Lille for the latter as recently as earlier this week, so perhaps Russell Martin will need to strengthen his attack.

Rangers' need for attacking firepower

Danilo’s consolation goal against Club Brugge was, remarkably, his first in a Rangers shirt since the demolition of Celtic all the way back on 2 January.

In total, since arriving from Feyenoord for around £6m two summers ago, the Brazilian has scored just 13 goals in 56 outings for the club, sitting out a whopping 58 matches due to various injury problems.

Thus, should Dessers and Igamane both be sold, Rangers cannot rely on Danilo, both in terms of quality but also his availability.

Thus, according to reports, via the Sun, Rangers are interested in signing young Villarreal striker Karl Etta Eyong.

Reports in Spain claim that Swansea City have had a loan offer rejected, while Leeds United and Levante, as well as Rangers, are also interested in signing the 21-year-old.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Glasgow giants have already signed ten new players this summer, so could the centre-forward be the latest name added to that list?

What Karl Etta Eyong would bring to Rangers

Born in Cameroon, Etta Eyong began his senior career at Cádiz, primarily representing their B team, featuring only twice for the senior side, before swapping one Yellow Submarine for another last summer.

Well, fair to say, he caught the eye playing for Villarreal B in the Spanish third-tier, scoring 17 goals in 30 Primera Federación appearances, thereby the division’s second-highest scorer, behind only Club World Cup star Gonzalo García of Real Madrid.

As a result, he was rewarded with his senior debut in April before, in only his second substitute outing in La Liga, heading home a last-gasp winner against Girona at Montilivi that was key to his side securing Champions League qualification.

Now, following the sale of Thierno Barry, the 21-year-old started a La Liga match for the very first time last Friday night, again breaking the deadlock with a header as Villarreal beat newly-promoted Real Oviedo 2-0 at Estadio de la Cerámica.

Thus, he has been labelled both an “exciting talent” and a “physical beast”, with writer Kai Watson describing him as a “powerful penalty box striker”, impressed by his “determination” and “anticipation” in the penalty area.

As all Spanish clubs continue to tighten the purse strings, in an attempt to comply with La Liga’s Draconian squad cost limit regulations, Villarreal would surely be open to selling the youngster, whose estimated transfer value is around £5.6m.

Signing Etta Eyong would of course be a risk, as he’s certainly not proven himself consistently at a high level, but he could turn out to be an absolute bargain in the long run.

Hamza Igamane, for example, arrived from Botola Pro side AS Far 12 months ago for just £1.7m, and could now be sold for around £15m, which is exactly the type of recruitment Rangers need to be targeting if they’re going to compete with Celtic financially.

Danilo is offering very little as Rangers’ centre-forward, that we know. He’s the third choice centre-forward without any injuries, so if Etta Eyong did arrive and thrive in Glasgow, it would surely only be bad news for him.

Not Djiga: Rangers must axe star who "looks like he's hasn't kicked a ball"

As Rangers’ Champions League hopes went up in flames, beaten 3-1 by Club Brugge, a summer signing “looks like he’s hasn’t kicked a ball before”.

Furious Unai Emery tears into 'lazy' Aston Villa players after 'frustrating' draw with 10-man Sunderland

A furious Unai Emery slammed his "lazy" Aston Villa players after they blew a lead against 10-man Sunderland on Sunday. Following their 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light, Villa are languishing down in 18th in the Premier League table with only three points from their opening five games.

  • Aston Villa's nightmare start

Aston Villa are still looking for their first win of the 2025-26 campaign after a disappointing draw at Sunderland on Sunday. The hosts were reduced to 10 men after Reinildo Mandava picked up a red card just past the half-hour mark. Matty Cash then broke the deadlock in the second half with a long-range strike for Villa, only to see his side concede just eight minutes later as Wilson Isidor scored the equaliser.

    Emery slams 'lazy' Villa stars

Speaking to reporters after the game, Villa boss Emery fumed: "We are not playing like I want. Of course, we have to adapt some players. We will need time with them, but the other players know how we want to control the game with the ball more than without the ball. We were conceding a lot of chances. Chances starting with their goalkeeper, long ball, second action, throw-in, corner, in our box and of course, we are conceding chances. “It was starting with the goalkeepers. And why?

"Because we were not dominating control of the game with one player more, doing passes, making passes and taking the right moment to attack them. We were not doing it. We were lazy sometimes in defence really. Lazy. For example, when we concede, we were lazy. Maybe it is the consequences, we are not feeling dominating, we are not feeling playing our style."

  • 'I am frustrated and disappointed'

The Spanish coach added: "Normally the players, they have attitude. But sometimes, because maybe they are a little bit upset or they are maybe a little bit not feeling good, they are not fighting. This is not something individually I can tell them like a punishment. It's something that, collectively, we have to try to understand and to try to feel better. I am not today frustrated and disappointed for the result, I am frustrated and disappointed for how we played and how we are not playing or feeling comfortable with our style. We have to try to recover our personality."
