'Good enough to play that role' – Voges backs Inglis as top-four Test batter

WA coach backs Inglis and Green to succeed in what looms as Australia’s new-look No.3-4 combination for the first Test against West Indies

Josh Inglis could possibly bat at No.4 in Australia’s revamped top-order for the first Test in the Caribbean and his Western Australia (WA) coach Adam Voges believes the wicketkeeper-batter is more than capable of succeeding in the top four at Test level despite limited experience there in first-class cricket.Inglis was confirmed as a certain starter for the first Test against West Indies in Barbados beginning next Wednesday after Cricket Australia took the unusual step of announcing that Marnus Labuschagne had been dropped five days out from the match while confirming that Steven Smith would miss out through injury.Inglis was named alongside Sam Konstas as the direct replacements. The batting order was not confirmed, nor was the final XI. Konstas looks set to open alongside Usman Khawaja as Australia’s selectors have publicly stated they are keen to bed down an opening combination for the West Indies tour and the Ashes after cycling through five different combinations in the last 12 Tests.Related

Questions surround Khawaja, Labuschagne, Konstas, Green

But with Smith likely to return from injury for the second Test in Grenada, it seems logical that Cameron Green will remain at No.3 despite twin failures in the World Test Championship (WTC) final while Inglis could slot in at No.4 in order to create the least disruption for when Smith returns, with Travis Head unlikely to be moved from his preferred position at No.5.Inglis, 30, has been one of the most in-form players on the planet this year across all-formats and scored a Test century on debut in Sri Lanka batting at No.5. But it was his first first-class century at No.5 having previously scored just one fifty in five innings in that slot. He has even less experience at No.3 and No.4. He played six innings at No.3 for WA in 2019 and scored 76 runs at 12.66 while he has batted just once at No.4, making 44 back in 2015. His best spot in first-class cricket is No.6 where he averages over 50 and has four centuries, all of which have come playing as the specialist wicketkeeper.Speaking at the BBL draft on Thursday in Melbourne, a day before Inglis’ return to the Test XI was confirmed, Voges said the right-hander had the technique and the temperament to handle batting No.3 or No.4 in Test cricket.”Obviously being a wicket-keeper you’re generally batting down the order,” Voges said. “We did trial Josh up the order a few years ago, batting at three and wicketkeeping, which is always difficult thing to do.”We did that because we felt technically he’s good enough to play that role and be able to do it. And I think without potentially the burden of having to take the gloves I think it’s a role he can fill. And I guess if you fast forward to what does the Test team looks over the course of an Ashes summer, I think these three Tests is a great audition for a number of players, and certainly hopefully for Josh, potentially in that role.”Cameron Green had a difficult WTC final at No.3•Associated Press

Voges also threw his support behind fellow Western Australian Green and did not advocate for Inglis to replace to him. Green had only previously batted at No.3 once in first-class cricket prior to batting there in the WTC final. He now has three scores at No.3 in first-class cricket of 15, 4 and 0, while he averages 63.92 at No.4 with six centuries including his 174 not out against New Zealand, and he averages 67.58 at No.5 in first-class cricket with four centuries. He has three centuries, including another Test hundred against India at No.6 at an average of 39.36.Voges urged patience with Green given that he had come off a 15-month period without playing Test cricket following his back injury.”We know how talented Cameron is,” Voges said. “He’s coming back off a long layoff with back surgery, missed out in the World Test Championship. There’s going to be vastly different conditions in the West Indies. And he’s a quality player and a class player, and he’ll bounce back.”Green remains unavailable to bowl in the Caribbean as he continues his slow rebuild from back surgery. He began bowling in the nets in England but played the WTC final as a batter-only and remains available as a batter-only in the Caribbean. He is not set to bowl in a game in any format until October where it is hoped he could bowl in Sheffield Shield cricket with the aim of being available as an allrounder in the Ashes. It means Beau Webster will remain as Australia’s allrounder in the Caribbean having made a stellar start to his Test career with the bat at No.6, including top-scoring for Australia in the first innings of the WTC final. But he has just one wicket for 99 from 28 overs with his medium pace in Test cricket. He did take two tail-end wickets with his offspin in two overs to finish off the second Test in Sri Lanka. How he will be used in the Caribbean and his effectiveness on what are likely to be pretty docile pitches remains to be seen.

Serial winner who worked with Ange now "favourite" for Rangers job

The search for Rangers’ next manager is heating up and, as such, a new name has reportedly emerged as the “favourite” to take the vacant role at Ibrox.

Rangers manager update

Some may still be in shock at Rangers that it’s not set to be Steven Gerrard in the dugout when domestic football returns. The Liverpool legend looked destined to return to Ibrox, before dealing the 49ers their latest blow. Forced back to the drawing board after their top candidate cited bad timing for rejecting the job, the new owners have quite the task on their hands.

Given that the Gers already sit as many as nine points behind Celtic and 11 behind unexpected leaders Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, to say that they can’t afford to get things wrong with their next appointment would be an understatement.

So far, similar names to the summer as well as some new faces have emerged as candidates. Danny Rohl, for example, has reportedly been discussed once again, whilst the likes of Graham Potter and Raphael Wicky have been mentioned for the first time.

It’s a case of choosing experience or youthful exuberance for those at Ibrox. Rohl would be an exciting choice, but not the safest option in current circumstances amid his inexperience. Potter, meanwhile, has the experience but would also be coming in off the back of failing at both West Ham United and Chelsea.

Other options include Hearts boss Derek McInnes. For Rangers, if they can’t match the league leaders, then hiring their manager may be their next best option. Former Ibrox star Kris Boyd believes the ship has sailed on that front, however.

It may also be none of those aforementioned options, with fresh reports now indicating that another name has emerged as the “favourite” to take the Rangers job.

Kevin Muscat now "favourite" for Rangers job

As reported by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Kevin Muscat is now emerging as the “favourite” for the Rangers job, overtaking Rohl in the process. The 52-year-old is currently in charge of Shanghai Port, but may yet be on his way to Scotland.

Whether the Gers wait until the Chinese Super League season concludes on November 22 or target the manager right away is the big question. After such a poor start to the campaign, the Gers could certainly do with an immediate boost, but the ball may be in Muscat’s court on that front.

It’s also not the first time that Muscat has been linked with a move to Rangers. In previous years, the likes of Philippe Clement have beaten him to the job, but this time could finally be different.

Having won the Australian league twice and the Australian cup with Melbourne Victory, the Japanese league and Japanese Super Cup with Yokohama Marinos, and the Chinese league and cup with Shanghai Port, Muscat has won everywhere he has been. Now, Rangers could be next.

Ibrox should love him: Rangers hold talks to hire "insanely talented boss"

The favourite for the job has also worked as Ange Postecoglou’s assistant with Australia in the past and may yet hand the Gers similar success that his compatriot gave the Bhoys.

Welsh-born Imad Wasim signs for Glamorgan

Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim has signed for Glamorgan as an overseas player for the remainder of the Vitality Blast campaign. The 37-year old, who was born in Swansea, joins to replace Hayden Kerr, who picked up in the home game against Surrey which will rule him out of his planned stint with the club.Returning to the country to his birth, Wasim brings a wealth of experience with 130 international caps for Pakistan. He will be representing his second Blast club having made 19 appearances for Nottinghamshire in the competition. He has also played for Trent Rockets in the Hundred, and has 390 appearances in the T20 format.Subject to approval from the Pakistan Cricket Board Imad will be available for selection for Saturday’s home fixture with Sussex. Glamorgan currently sit fourth in the South Group, with three wins from five.Commenting on the signing Director of Cricket Mark Wallace said: “It’s a real shame that Hayden’s injury has turned out to be a bit worse than we initially hoped. He has settled in really well and though he won’t quite be fit to fulfil his initial contract at the club we hope to see Hayden back in a Glamorgan shirt in the future.””To be able to bring in someone of Imad’s experience and quality at such short notice is fantastic. He’ll give us plenty of options to bowl at a variety of times with the ball and as another left-handed batting option in the middle order. We’re looking forward to welcoming him back to Wales.”

Chelsea "love" £70m attacker and "will push" to hijack Real Madrid's move

Chelsea “love” an attacker with a “left foot made of gold” and “will push” to hijack Real Madrid’s move, it has been revealed.

Blues looking to sign new attacking midfielder

In Cole Palmer’s absence, the Blues struggled against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, succumbing to a 3-1 home defeat, with Andrey Santos failing to create any big chances prior to being replaced by Josh Acheampong after 54 minutes.

Enzo Fernandez, on the other hand, put in a more impressive performance, scoring his side’s only goal, but the Argentina international has been called into question for his creativity in the past.

With Palmer not fully-fit, Enzo Maresca’s side have put in some poor displays recently, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United, following the England international being forced off with a groin injury just after the 20-minute mark.

As such, there is arguably a lack of depth in attacking midfield, which Maresca has now set out to rectify, with Chelsea joining the race for Real Madrid target Nico Paz, according to transfer journalist Mark Brus, in a report for Caught Offside.

Brus’ source said: “Chelsea love Nico, Chelsea will push for sure. Real Madrid are confident, but Como will try to negotiate a new contract for him to remove the buy-back clause. They believe they could then sell him for as much as €80m (£70m).”

Should Paz sign a new deal with Como, it could pave the way for a move to Stamford Bridge, but Real Madrid remain confident about re-signing the attacking midfielder, and they currently remain in control of his future.

Paz could take career to next level at Stamford Bridge

Real Madrid may be ruing the decision to let the Argentinian leave in the first place, given the impact he’s made at Como, chipping in with six goals and nine assists in his first Serie A campaign, and he has since made a flying start to the new season.

The Spain-born star has amassed six goal contributions in his opening five league games, showcasing that he could soon be ready to take his career to the next level by signing for one of Europe’s top clubs.

Lauded as having a “left foot made of gold” by football scout Jacek Kulig, the starlet also fits the bill age-wise, given that he is just 21-years-old, and the Blues are well-known to have a policy of signing young players.

Paz ticks every box for Chelsea, and with Maresca clearly in need of players to provide competition for Palmer’s starting spot, he could be the ideal addition to the squad.

Spurs have signed an incredible "freak talent" who could be their new Bale

The glory hasn’t always followed, but Tottenham Hotspur have had some truly world-class stars play for them over the last ten to 15 years.

The one who was able to cement his legacy with a trophy was Son Heung-min, but the likes of Harry Kane, Mousa Dembélé and Luka Modrić were just as brilliant for the North Londoners.

However, when it comes to a combination of otherworldly talent and entertainment value, it’s hard to look past Gareth Bale.

The Welshman transformed into one of the best players in the world at Spurs, and it now looks like the club might have a new version of him.

Bale's rise at Spurs

Ask any Spurs fan what season Bale hit his peak at the club, and the vast majority will say his final season, 12/13.

That campaign saw the Welshman reach levels nobody really knew he could, as he scored 26 goals and provided ten assists in just 44 appearances, totalling 3,891 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal or assist every 1.22 games, or every 108.08 minutes.

Such a ludicrous rate of return for a team that only finished fifth was enough for Real Madrid to come sniffing, and one world record bid of £85m later, the Spanish giants got exactly what they wanted.

However, while the memory of the international legend at Spurs is a great one, things were not always so straightforward for him, nor was he always such a goal machine.

In fact, when the club signed him from Southampton in May 2007, he wasn’t even an attacker; he was a highly rated full-back.

That’s the position he continued to play, through injuries and poor form, for a couple of years in North London, until, partway through the 09/10 season, Harry Redknapp decided to move him up the pitch and play him on the wing.

The rest, as they say, is history, and while Spurs might not have another winger as devastatingly effective as Bale, they might have another international in the making who could be as good in their own position.

ing through the academy at the moment, from Luca Williams-Barnett to Oliver Irow, but there is one out on loan who could just be the best of the lot.

That youngster is, of course, Luka Vušković, who is currently on a season-long loan with Bundesliga side Hamburg, and by all accounts, is having an exceptional season so far.

In fact, the Croatian wonderkid has just been named the league’s rookie of the month, and has clearly won over the fans, with content creator Fiago claiming that he’s “the best 18-year-old center back I’ve ever seen in my life.”

That’s not all, though, as not long after the Lilywhites originally signed the youngster, respected analyst Ben Mattinson described him as a “freak athlete” and a “freak talent” with a “scary ceiling,” which sounds quite Bale-esque.

Combine these raving reviews with the fact that he’s currently playing in defence, still incredibly young, and has proven himself to be something of an attacking force over the last year or so, and the comparison is easy to make.

For example, in 36 appearances for KVC Westerloo last season, the Split-born titan scored seven goals and provided three assists, and in just four appearances this year, he has already opened his account.

Finally, he has already won a senior cap for Croatia, so it looks like he’s set to dominate on the domestic and international scene for a long time to come.

Ultimately, Vušković is unlikely to become a winger like Bale, but there is arguably even more hype around him today than around the Welshman when he joined Spurs, and he looks set for superstardom.

Gerrard has already made key Thelwell demand at Ibrox as Rangers return draws near

In a fresh Gers update on the potential arrival of Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, reports are now indicating that Teddy Bears chief, Kevin Thelwell, has been asked to change his role slightly at Rangers.

Who could join Gerrard at Rangers?

It looks as though Gerrard is almost certain to become the next Rangers manager at this stage.

The Liverpool legend is reportedly on the brink of an agreement and his backroom staff is already a topic of discussion in Glasgow. After admitting the need to lean on his staff, the Gers could yet welcome back some more familiar faces in the coming days.

According to recent reports, Gary McAllister and Jermain Defoe are likely to join Gerrard by returning to Rangers and the incoming boss also wants to bring former England coach Steve Holland to the club. Perhaps in an ideal world for Gerrard personally, Michael Beale would be coming back to his role as assistant, but his return to the club would not be as welcomed.

Getting things right in every department, from the manager to the rest of his staff, should be a top priority for the 49ers.

The last thing they need is to fail twice in their first year in Scotland, having already watched Russell Martin crash and burn.

Gerrard’s arrival should steady the ship after such a disastrous start. Whether it’s enough to keep hold of the likes of Nicolas Raskin is another question, however. Recent transfer rumours have suggested that Besiktas are ready to rescue the midfielder as soon as January in what would be an early blow for the new manager.

After telling one Ibrox chief to change his role upon his arrival, though, it’s the type of situation that Gerrard will be hoping to avoid.

Steven Gerrard tells Kevin Thelwell to adjust Rangers role

According to talkSPORT, with his return drawing near, Gerrard has indirectly told Kevin Thelwell to adjust his role as sporting director, with the incoming new manager demanding a “decisive say” on transfers and Rangers’ recruitment drive.

Celtic warned Gerrard has immediate Ibrox plan that Rangers fans will love

He’s already got lofty ambitions…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 11, 2025

Whilst Martin received his fair share of criticism in the summer, Thelwell hasn’t exactly enjoyed an impressive start to life at Rangers.

The sporting director helped bring as many as 14 fresh faces to Glasgow in the summer transfer window, and it’s difficult to pick one name other than Djeidi Gassama who has got off to a positive start.

Former Rangers ace Kris Boyd recognised that when Martin’s tenure came to an end.

Whether Gerrard’s influence turns things around on the recruitment front is now the big question, as Thelwell looks to turn his own poor start around at Ibrox.

Joshua Zirkzee finds Premier League suitor with Man Utd striker 'desperate' to leave Old Trafford

Manchester United outcast Joshua Zirkzee could be close to ending his nightmare spell at Old Trafford with another Premier League team touted to want the Netherlands striker in the forthcoming January transfer window. Zirkzee has barely featured for United this season and he is yet to start or score, managing just 74 minutes across three Premier League appearances and an eight-minute Carabao Cup cameo against lowly Grimsby Town – all as a substitute.

  • Zirkzee reduced to bit-part role at United

Zirkzee's lack of playing time follows the summer arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, which has pushed him down the pecking order. Frustrated with his peripheral role under Ruben Amorim, the Netherlands star is reportedly seeking a move in the January transfer window to secure regular playing time and boost his chances of a spot in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands World Cup squad.

    Zirkzee’s revealing post-match celebrations

After Man Utd's 2-1 recent victory over Liverpool at Anfield, Zirkzee – once again an unused substitute – joyfully joined in with his team-mates, celebrating in front of the travelling fans, and he was also seen putting Bruno Fernandes in a headlock and hugging goalkeeper Senne Lammens, which impressed the club's supporters. But it’s certainly not a clear demonstration that he wants to stay.

Ahead of the match, Amorim was asked about Kobbie Mainoo and Zirkzee’s frustration over their lack of playing time. The United boss said: "That is normal, and I also know that in our club, everything is a lot of noise, and you have to have news, and players are not playing. They want to play. Like you said, there's a World Cup. There are agents that listen to the players talking all the time. So, I understand that but they are our players, and we need everyone to have a good season."

  • Premier League option for Netherlands star

According to a report by , the Netherlands international is being considered by West Ham, who are crying out for additional firepower as their season lurches from bad to worse. Their recent defeat by Brentford was played out in front of a largely empty London Stadium during the final stages as supporters made for the exits as they showed their displeasure with events in east London.

The report also states that Zirkzee is “desperate” to leave Old Trafford. The Hammers have struggled significantly all season, struggles which have continued since the arrival of new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who replaced Graham Potter last month. The main forwards, Callum Wilson and Niclas Fullkrug, have contributed a combined one Premier League goal this season. Both have struggled for form and fitness, with Wilson having a history of hamstring issues and Fullkrug failing to deliver consistently.

With eight games gone the east London club are already facing the real prospect of a relegation battle this season. West Ham are over-reliant on winger Jarrod Bowen, who is the team's top scorer, but opposition teams have focused on shutting him down, limiting the Hammers' overall scoring threat. They have netted just six goals in eight league matches this season, they’re currently second bottom of the Premier League and the urgent need for a new, reliable goal-scorer to help them survive relegation is a top priority for their Portuguese boss.

    Transfer options for Hammers

West Ham face competition for Zirkzee from Italian clubs like Roma, who are considering terminating Evan Ferguson's loan from Brighton due to his poor form to make room for a new forward. However, the Hammers boss may prefer a traditional target man, similar in style to Forest’s Chris Wood or Fulham’s Raul Jimenez. The run of matches leading up to the next international break will give Zirkzee a huge indication of where he sits in Amorim’s plans, with Brighton, Forest and Tottenham ready to face the Red Devils in the coming weeks.

Vinicius Jr in hot water! Real Madrid star faces punishment for Clasico substitution histrionics having angered team-mates & club hierarchy with outburst against Barcelona

Vinicius Junior's petulant reaction to be taken off during Real Madrid's 2-1 win over fierce rivals Barcelona on Sunday reportedly didn't go unnoticed by his colleagues. The Brazilian winger made straight for the dressing room when Xabi Alonso wanted to swap him with Rodrygo, briefly refusing to watch the remaining minutes of the match because he was too angry to sit on the bench.

Vini Jr angers team-mates

According to Barcelona-based , Real Madrid players and executives were not impressed by what happened when Vinicius left the pitch. Venting his fury after being removed with 72 minutes played, Vinicius allegedly pointed out that he has often started and not finished games this season.

"Always me," he is believed to have said, before adding that it would be better for everyone if he wasn't left to stew on his feelings. "I'm leaving the team, it's better if I leave, I'm leaving," the player said, before taking off back inside. Eventually, he returned and was involved in the furious post-match confrontations centred around Barcelona's Lamine Yamal.

Although he eventually returned to the bench for the final stages, and was then involved in the post-match brawl that ensued when Dani Carvajal and Thibaut Courtois both angrily confronted Lamine Yamal, the fact that he left the area at all caused an issue.

In the eyes of his colleagues it was "bad" and "wrong" for that to be his reaction to being substituted. Some club officials are claimed to believe Alonso made the wrong call withdrawing the 2024 Ballon d'Or runner-up when he did, but still cannot abide by what followed and are "very upset" over his reaction. That image is not what the club wants to project. Ultimately, the possibility is raised that Real Madrid are "seriously considering" sanctions.

AdvertisementAFPAlonso plays down Vini Jr's behaviour

Publicly, Alonso has done his best to frame what happened as unproblematic, and born out of a professional desire to be on the pitch at all times.

"The only thing Vinicius was missing was a goal," he told reporters. "It's true that he came off the pitch when he was feeling best and I could have waited a bit to replace him, but I understood that we needed fresh players to maintain control. Vinicius wanted to stay on because he was feeling good.

"Franco [Mastantuono] wanted to carry on playing too. He said to me, 'Are you taking me off?' And I said, 'Yes'. Something similar happened with Vini. He wasn't very happy, but neither was Franco. It happens to everyone, but I'm very happy with Vinicius's performance. The schedule is demanding and we have to keep going."

Incident could mark Vini Jr's Real Madrid future

MD's report adds the possibility that it all points to something much more significant. Vinicius is thought to have verbally agreed a new contract in principle with Real Madrid beyond his current deal that is due to expire in 2027, but it crucially remains unsigned. During negotiations, the player is said to have been asking for more money than the club is willing to offer, standing firm on their overall salary structure.

The plan for Vinicius is to wait and see, even to the point of not ruling out a free transfer in just under two years' time. That isn't something Real Madrid would not be willing to entertain – as it stands, he's valued at a monstrous €150 million (£131m/$175m), per . If it got to the summer of 2026 and still no signature is on the paperwork, Los Blancos would have to put him up for sale to ensure that a fee comes in. Whether being punished for his behaviour in El Clasico would make Vinicius less inclined to sign the proposed contract on the table remains to be seen.

Getty ImagesVini Jr left needing to prove himself

Even though he is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, Vinicius has reached a point where he needs to prove himself over the next few months. If the Brazilian was a credible contender for the Ballon d'Or off the back of 2023-24, he failed to reach those same standards last season and is still falling short of his previous best in the early weeks of 2025-26. Through 10 La Liga appearances, he has nine combined goals and assists, but they were squeezed into only six games and therefore he is lacking consistency. In the Champions League, meanwhile, he's still waiting for a goal involvement this season.

Alonso has shown his preference for rotation, trying to keep players fresher to win across multiple competitions. But if someone like Rodrygo has been more accepting of that, getting his head down and carrying on even if frustrated on the inside, Vinicius is having a harder time with it.

The worrying thing for the player himself is that Luis Enrique has proven at Paris Saint-Germain that great success can be had by dispensing with big egos and building a squad more focused on the collective than individuals.
