No último minuto, Vladimir Hernández e Noguera entraram.

-Tem muita coisa para ajustar ainda. Eu estava conversando com o Elano e queríamos trocar uns cinco, os caras correram muito – concluiu.

Sheff Wed must unleash Gregory this weekend

Sheffield Wednesday host Doncaster at Hillsborough on Saturday as they go in search of their first win of the campaign.

The Owls lost on penalties to Championship side Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup before drawing 0-0 with Nigel Adkins’ Charlton on the opening day of the League One season.

They now face a Doncaster side who lost 2-1 to AFC Wimbledon last weekend in the league before beating Walsall on penalties in the Carabao Cup this week.

On the Chalkboard

Callum Paterson was forced off with a worrying head injury against Charlton and could now miss the match against Doncaster. He was stretchered off the pitch just 16 minutes into the game, having started as the main centre-forward, and Moore could now need to make a decision on his team selection for this weekend’s clash.

The Owls boss must now unleash Lee Gregory this weekend to make his full debut for the club. The 32-year-old has joined from Championship side Stoke and could now have the perfect opportunity to come in and show what he can do in League One.

His record in the third tier is exceptional, with 35 goals and nine assists in 78 appearances in League One throughout his career, having also played 183 games in the Championship, in which he has scored 40 goals. This highlights his experience and quality in the Football League and why he could be a terrific player to bring into the Owls’ starting line-up against Doncaster.

Earlier this year, Derby manager Wayne Rooney said that Gregory was a “handful” to deal with during his loan spell at Pride Park and that he is able to give a lift to team-mates with his energy.

The 35-year-old told RamsTV, as relayed by Derby News: “I thought Lee Gregory was great for us when he came on. He showed great energy and enthusiasm.

“He was a handful and I think he really lifted the rest of the team when he came on with his energy. I was delighted with him.”

Gregory could therefore help to raise the standards of his teammates by pressing the opposition and proving a handful when out of possession. His energy could inspire others to match his levels of effort, giving Wednesday a greater chance of putting in a superb team performance instead of being lackadaisical off the ball.

Moore praised Gregory as a ‘quality player’ after the forward’s arrival at Hillsborough. The manager told Wednesday’s official website: “He’s a quality player. He adds competition to the top end of the pitch and we’re looking forward to getting him started.

“He’s knows the level, his enthusiasm and willingness that he possesses makes him a really good player and we’re glad to have him on board. He gives us that little bit more in terms of attacking options.”

The £12k-per-week attacker offered a glimpse of what he is capable of with two goals against Manchester United’s under-23 side in a friendly earlier this week. This shows that he is fit and raring to make his debut for the club, with minutes under his belt in the friendly and goals going in to boost his confidence, which is why Moore must unleash him on Saturday.

Ball: Loan move could possibly help Liam Delap

Former Manchester City defender Michael Ball feels that a loan move for striker Liam Delap could possibly help him.

Liam, the son of Rory Delap, has been linked with one of his father’s old clubs in Stoke City according to the Manchester Evening News. Alongside the Potters, a number of other clubs, including West Bromwich Albion, Millwall and according to Lancs Live, Preston North End, have been linked with a summer move for the forward.

Delap was in impressive form last season in the Premier League 2, scoring 24 goals in just 20 games and former Cityzen Michael Ball believes a loan move away from the Etihad Stadium could possibly benefit the young striker, exclusively telling the Transfer Tavern: “When I’ve seen him play for the first-team he’s done well, he’s a different type of striker than City have had, he’s sort of stuck between a big guy going forward but he likes running in behind as well.

“So, I feel a loan could possibly help him again for one more year, but I wouldn’t go against if he actually wants to push a move permanently to get his career on track now, you’re only young for so many years and you want to start making a name for yourself, you want to get a shirt, name on your back and that’s your main position.”

Delap made his senior debut for Manchester City last season against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup, marking his City bow with a goal.

After Sergio Aguero left the Etihad Stadium this summer, City have been linked with a move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane and according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, City have already had a bid of £100m turned down for the England international.

If Kane does become a Manchester City player, though, it could see Delap’s game time limited in the first team and so a loan move could be beneficial to his development this season.

Cricket South Africa president elections delayed

The ascension of Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka, the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) chairman, to the presidency of Cricket South Africa (CSA) may be delayed despite this week’s resignation of Norman Arendse

Ken Borland19-Sep-2008The ascension of Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka, the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) chairman, to the presidency of Cricket South Africa (CSA) may be delayed despite this week’s resignation of Norman Arendse. The meeting on September 26 at which fresh elections were due to be held, following the combining of CSA’s amateur and professional arms, will no longer be the forum at which Nyoka, currently the only nominee, becomes the new president. This obviously raises questions as to whether Arendse’s backers are still planning a late move to stymie Nyoka and his supporters.Apparently, the delay is so that the 11 provincial affiliates can thoroughly digest the changes to CSA’s structure, which has been brought about chiefly by new tax rules. While those who have become accustomed to Arendse’s canny machinations will have raised eyebrows over the postponement of the actual election, Nyoka believes the time for voting will be just around the corner.”The delay is because of a request from the provinces, but it is just a delay, the process will continue,” Nyoka told CricInfo. “We just need to make sure we do things properly in terms of corporate governance.”Nyoka is also against culling any new opposition he may face because the delay provides an opportunity for fresh nominations to be made. “There will be an opportunity for others to submit nominations, but that is part of the democratic process, you always expect someone to run against you in an election.”Nyoka is famous for such conciliatory attitudes, which is why he is seen as the ideal successor to the combative Arendse. He has driven Gauteng cricket for the last three years, taking over at a time when black and white administrators had moved back to the battle lines drawn before unity in 1992. Just prior to his election as chairman, one GCB meeting almost ended in fisticuffs. It is a credit to the 48-year-old Nyoka who, like former ICC president Ray Mali, was born in the Eastern Cape that such enmity has died away. There is still every chance that Nyoka, a doctor by profession, will now get the chance to perform the healing job at a national level.

Different methods, similar outcomes

There are different ways of setting a match-winning total and the approaches adopted by India and Pakistan during the Kitply Cup were outstanding examples of contrasting methods which produced the same result – a total in excess of 300. India were 143 for 0 at the end of the 20th over in the first match against Pakistan; at the same stage in the final, Pakistan were 75 for 1 and yet they scored only 15 runs fewer than what India did in the end.In the league match, India’s openers – Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir – carted Pakistan’s wayward attack all over the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Their rapid partnership set up a solid platform for the rest to build on without worrying about the run-rate.Pakistan, on the other hand, chose caution over aggression during the Powerplay overs in the final. It was their capitulation to 26 for 3 that had shut them out while chasing 331, and today, Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal were watchful against Praveen Kumar, the bowler who took the first four wickets in their previous meeting. After Akmal fell, Younis Khan and Butt continued to build a steady foundation. More significantly for Pakistan, they carried on and seized the initiative. “They were 100 for 1 after 25 overs,” Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s captain, said. “After that they took on the bowlers and played some good shots. It really put the bowlers under pressure. And under the circumstances, we couldn’t recover from that.”With Praveen having wrecked Pakistan and restricted Bangladesh in India’s earlier games, the rest of the bowlers had the advantage of bowling to under-pressure batsmen trying to rebuild. But today, India’s support bowlers were faced with the task of making inroads. Although he dismissed Akmal, Irfan Pathan failed to create any pressure, conceding six boundaries in his first spell of six overs. Piyush Chawla, who had taken 4 for 40 to clean up Pakistan’s lower order in the earlier encounter, haemorrhaged runs once Younis and Butt consciously began to attack. The four part-timers Dhoni used were also ineffective: Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan and Suresh Raina conceded 71 for no wicket between them.Faced with an attack lacking incisiveness, Younis and Butt shifted seamlessly from first to fourth gear. Their approach was that of a calculated assault – aggression with minimal risk. They batted with authority, picking out the gaps. Younis and Butt scored 84 runs between deep midwicket and long-on, but surprisingly the gap was never plugged.”He [Younis] was scoring through square leg as well, he was sweeping,” Dhoni said. “You hardly have fielders in that zone, you know the country [the area between deep midwicket and long-on] area. Having a long-on and a country is difficult. He was picking it from outside off and most of the times he cleared the boundary. He took on the bowlers and he was successful.”Between overs 20 and 40, a period heavily criticised for its lack of intensity after the arrival of Twenty20, Younis and Butt plundered 150 runs, even more than what Sehwag and Gambhir had managed during the Powerplays on Tuesday. When Younis finally got out, Pakistan had eight wickets in hand for the last eight overs, a luxury that allowed them to bat with a carefree approach.Dhoni admitted there was not much that could have been in the wake of a superlative batting performance. “It [scoring] was really hard to control, you try many fields, you try many lines. There were errors from the bowlers but you can’t really blame them. They were batting well and scoring off good balls.”Call it cautious or old-fashioned, Pakistan’s methodical approach gave India no footholds from which they could climb back into the game. They came out with a plan, which according to Shoaib Malik, their captain, was to “survive initially and then accelerate”, and executed it with precision.

Palmer urges Leeds United to spend amid Nahitan Nandez rumours

Leeds United are going to have to spend money this summer, former Whites player Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast.

The Yorkshire club are currently being linked with a move for Cagliari star Nahitan Nandez, who could cost a large fee.

According to Calciomercato, Leeds have been told to stump up €36m (£30m) if they wish to sign the 25-year-old midfielder.

Whether the Whites are willing to fork that out on one player this transfer window remains to be seen, but Palmer feels they will have to spend before the market closes.

Discussing Leeds’ reported interest in Nandez in an exclusive interview with FFC, the ex-England international said:

“I think that they’re going to have to spend. Listen, 30 million now is going to be the norm to get a quality player into the football club.

“If you’ve got ambition to push on – Leeds finished midway in the table last season – if you want to finish above that, you’ve got to improve the quality of your squad. And that means you’re going to have to spend more money.”

Leeds, promoted last year, had a very good 2020/21 campaign after finishing ninth in the Premier League.

It will now be interesting to see how Marcelo Bielsa builds on that, with the Whites boss perhaps needing to spend big on players such as Nandez to improve his squad.

Coach wary of burnout as Sri Lanka start World Cup build-up

Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore is wary of player burnout as he prepares his young team during the nest six weeks in South Africa and Australia for another shot at cricket’s most prized and expensive title – the World Cup next February

Saadi Thawfeeq18-Oct-2002Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore is wary of player burnout as he prepares his young team during the nest six weeks in South Africa and Australia for another shot at cricket’s most prized and expensive title – the World Cup next February .The coach who guided the country to its highest achievement in the sport when they won the World Cup in 1996 thinks the present team has the ingredients to make it happen again provided the players are nurtured carefully through the next four months ."It’s great to play against that kind of opposition, but we’ve got to be careful that we don’t mismanage the opportunity that’s provided for us," said Whatmore."In my opinion, it is potentially dangerous with the frequency of games and the workload that we have, that we should be a little bit careful we do not get into a situation when we play our first World Cup match on February 10 (v New Zealand) we have a group of players who are very tired and jaded."While it’s great to play on surfaces that we need to get used to, we also have to be a little bit careful the players don’t burn out. Prescribing sufficient rest would mean that you wouldn’t play necessarily your strongest team on a game to game basis. Therefore, it is important that the public and everyone else know and understand that."While the objective is to win every match, you also run the risk of a little bit of confidence down because you are playing against good, tough opposition and managing players that is not your best team that is available at anyone game," said Whatmore."In my mind there is a huge danger of being in a situation where the players start an important competition and they are down in terms of their drive to perform in amajor competition. The objective is to ensure that the players are at their peak at the World Cup and commence the tournament as fresh as they possibly can. There’s a mean’s to an end and our objective is the World Cup," Whatmore said.Sri Lanka commence their final preparations towards the World Cup when they leave tomorrow for a two-Test and five-match one-day international tour to South Africa. This will be followed in mid-December by an eight-match (11 if Sri Lanka qualify for the finals) triangular in Australia, where England is also playing."We would be looking to play a game of cricket more suited to those conditions. That being the underline objective, I would like to see the Sri Lankan team take on its opposition with an attack a little bit more akin to what other teams do in those conditions and have had success," said Whatmore."In South Africa we are playing only against one opposition. In the World Cup we are playing against many. I think it will be very good practice for us if we are able to come up with a combination that is more likely to give us a result in these five games against the same opposition bearing in mind, we won’t be playing South Africa in every match in the World Cup," he said.Whatmore said that he was keenly looking forward to seeing more of the seven quicks picked for the tour, and the batsmen getting in there and creating a presence amongst themselves. He said to be successful in South African conditions Sri Lanka will need to succeed in all departments."At any stage you can get a good batting or bowling performance that can win a match. The fielding has to be of paramount importance to back up the quicks. There are certain wickets there where the bowlers can make an impression on the game and there are certain wickets where the batters can do the same. It is important that all areas are covered adequately and contributions are provided," said Whatmore."Personally, I think we need to brush up a bit in our bowling attack which has been predominantly based around spin and had some terrific results. In these conditions I would like to see the more medium-pace quick stuff providing the bulk of the overs to put the pressure on the opposition. That will really provide good opportunities for some."The batting has also to be given due importance with the ball that’s coming on with a little bit of bounce, making sure that when they do get a start they go on. We’ve got enough batsmen to make a reasonable total or chase a total. What I would like to see is a little bit more dedicated effort into the formation of the bowling attack, which is slightly different to what we have been doing," he said.Whatmore said that in his opinion the bulk of the players who are selected for the Australian tour will form the World Cup squad because there was hardly any time between tours to make changes. Even for the current South African tour, the one-day squad is likely to be finalized before the first Test starts at Jo’burg on November 8.There will be similar logistic problems concerning the World Cup squad too because the final 15 will have to be submitted to the ICC by December 31, at which point Sri Lanka would have played only three of their allotted eight qualifying matches in Australia.Whatmore said as much as the one-day games are important so too are the two Tests against South Africa."It is very important for Sri Lanka to come out and have a good strong showing in those conditions. We haven’t particularly done well on that last tour and some of the lessons I am sure have been learnt," he said.Sir Lanka have made two Test tours to South Africa in 1997-98 and 2000-01 and, lost both series by 2-0 margins."I think the group of players that we’ve got in terms of the attack and the options that we have, we might be better placed to put more pressure on the opposition than before," said Whatmore."The two Test matches are important to get out there and really compete in conditions different to what we are used to. I think that might give us a little bit of confidence as well for the one-day series. The game is a very good indicator of the final group of players who will represent us in the World Cup," he said."The last time Sri Lanka went there, South Africa played very well. They were on top[ of their game. But at the moment I am not sure they are as stronger as they have been. So there are some variables. All I can say is that the boys who are going there have a good feeling that they can do well."South Africa are still a good outfit in their own country and despite (Allan) Donald retiring from Test cricket, and Jonty Rhodes and Darryl Cullinan not playing Test cricket, they are still not an easy team to beat in their own country. I think it would be a good test for us," Whatmore said.SRI LANKA TEST TEAM TO SOUTH AFRICA:Sanath Jayasuriya (captain), Marvan Atapattu (vice-captain), Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Russel Arnold, Hashan Tillakaratne, Jehan Mubarak, Prasanna Jayawardene (w/k), Hasantha Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Dilhara Fernando, Ruchira Perera, Chamila Gamage, Sujeewa de Silva, Tharanga Lakshitha, Thilan Thushara.Officials: Dav Whatmore (coach), Ajit Jayasekera (manager), Duleep Mendis (technical advisor), Alex Kountouri (physio).

Pundit can’t rule out Mahrez and Sterling leaving Man City

It is strange to think that Manchester City and Pep Guardiola may want to rebuild after doing the double and winning the Premier League.

However, they once again failed to win the Champions League so they may look to move on some players that have been around for a while, something that wouldn’t surprise former City star Paul Stewart.

Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez have been touted with moves away from the Etihad, and the former experienced probably his worst season for Man City as he was often shunned to the bench for important games such as Champions League clashes against Borussia Dortmund and PSG.

There have been reports suggesting that Guardiola and the Man City board are not afraid to splash the cash this money to try and win that elusive Champions League trophy, and suggestions that they want both Harry Kane and Jack Grealish is a potentially terrifying prospect for the rest of the teams.

Man City have got a lot of players within their ranks that have been at the club for a number of years and it could be a case of they are too comfortable, so Guardiola could look to show some of them the exit door this summer and Stewart expects this to happen, as he spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern:

“I think that you might see Mahrez go this summer because I think City might look to rebuild, so Raheem Sterling could be shown the door.”

Sterling arrived from Liverpool for what was big money back in 2016 and since he arrived in Manchester he has won 11 pieces of silverware and managed to score 114 goals in all competitions.

Despite seemingly not being one of Guardiola’s favourite or most trusted players, Sterling was handed a surprising start in the Champions League final, which saw them try a new system and it failed miserably.
