Sussex announce Brooks successor

Sussex have announced that Zac Toumazi, the former Hampshire commercial director, will succeed Dave Brooks as chief executive in January.Toumazi has extensive experience in the financial sector, working for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, before switching to cricket firstly with Surrey for six years and then with Hampshire from 2011.He will attempt to continue to move Sussex forward and build on the work of Brooks whose four years at Sussex saw the club win a one-day double In 2009 and Division Two of the County Championship in 2010.Since announcing he was leaving Sussex at the end of the year, Brooks has been appointed to the Guernsey Cricket Board. His successor at Sussex, Toumazi, will take over a financially healthy club, largely thanks to inheritance from former club president Spen Cama, and a recently development ground.”We are very pleased to appoint Zac,” Jim May, Sussex chairman, said. “We believe his commercial experience, cultural fit and passion for cricket give him the credentials to ensure that Sussex continues to lead the way both on and off the pitch.”Dave Brooks leaves us in great shape this month after four outstanding years. We had a very strong group of candidates who applied to succeed him.Toumazi said, “I am very excited. I look forward to working with the entire team taking Sussex forward whilst preserving the values that make it so special.”

Faded final still a double chance

ESPNcricinfo previews the Clydesdale Bank 40 final between Hampshire and Warwickshire at Lord’s

The decline in attraction of cricket’s domestic cup final has parallels with football’s FA Cup final – shifting time slots and sponsors, the rising importance of more valuable competitions – but while the Football Association will always be able to shift tickets for Wembley, the ECB has been forced into some blue sky thinking to try and boost the profile of an occasion where not so long ago, the cricket did all the talking.Friends Life t20 finals day saw a host of comedians keep the crowd chuckling but for the CB40 final, Lord of the Dance will provide the supplementary entertainment. More than 500 young people from schools around the country will perform a “unique choreographed dance routine” – the largest ever staged at Lord’s. One can only assume there have been others.Whoever bats second will be hoping a mass of young children do nothing to affect the condition of the outfield, as chasing has been the path to victory in each of the last four finals. Chasing has also been very successful for Warwickshire; five of their eight victories in the group stage came via bowling first and only one of those pursuits was tight. Only once did they lose batting second.Their success with the bat has gone hand in hand with Varun Chopra’s excellent season. He has made 446 runs at 55.75. Chopra’s opening partner William Porterfield has also been in form with 395 runs, although he is at the World Twenty20 with Ireland. When you add Tim Ambrose’s average of 59 in eight innings into the order, it is easy to see why they won the second-highest number of games of any team in the group stage. And they needed those wins, qualifying only on countback ahead of Kent – who inflicted Warwickshire’s only batting aberration, when the Bears were shot out for 96 at Edgbaston. The bowling attack also boasts the names that have been lauded as Warwickshire took the County Championship title. Chris Wright’s 19 victims have cost 21.15 apiece; Chris Woakes’ 13 just 16.92. Spinner Jeetan Patel has also replicated his Championship influence in the CB40, going at fewer than four runs per over and picking up 11 wickets. The spin department may prove the widest gap between the teams: Hampshire are without Danny Briggs, their leading wicket-taker with 19 victims, who is also at the World T20 in Sri Lanka, with England. But Hampshire do welcome back Neil McKenzie. He flew home after the Friends Life t20 final but has travelled back to try and help Hampshire to a one-day double, which would prove ample compensation, financially if anything, for failing to win promotion in the Championship. Also missing for Hampshire is Dimitri Mascarenhas, one of their most experienced campaigners. He aggravated an injury in the FLt20 final and is now resting ahead of the T20 Champions League in October. But Hampshire have become used to the big occasion, winning the FLt20 in two of the last three seasons. Four of this year’s squad – Jimmy Adams, Michael Carberry, Sean Ervine and Liam Dawson – also played in their last final appearance in the longer one-day competition, when they beat Sussex to win the 2009 FP Trophy, although talisman Dominic Cork, who took four early wickets that day, is no longer around. Ervine is also a veteran of the 2005 final, in the old 50-over format, and he scored a 93-ball hundred as Hampshire defeated this year’s opponents, Warwickshire, by 18 runs. Also returning from that match is Warwickshire’s Neil Carter, hoping for one last tilt at glory. His five-for and pinch-hit 32 were in vain in 2005 but he got his hands on the inaugural CB40 trophy in 2010, when Ian Bell’s hundred saw them to victory. And it is the likes of Bell, Chopra, Wright and Woakes – players in form, who have played high-quality cricket all summer – that give Warwickshire the edge. Hampshire, however, will hope their underdog spirit can produce the sparkle this flagging tournament desperately needs.

Azhar Mahmood waiting for Indian visa to play IPL

Azhar Mahmood, the former Pakistan allrounder who is now a British citizen, has not been able to play for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL because he has not yet been given an Indian visa. Mahmood had been bought by Kings XI for $200,000 at the 2012 player auction. The Kings XI management had said Mahmood had taken a short break after playing in the Bangladesh Premier League, but the captain Adam Gilchrist said there had been visa issues. “It’s up to the government. I believe that he has not yet got his visa,” Gilchrist told . “When we picked him at the auction, we were given to believe that he would be available for all the matches. But that has not happened. He is yet to get his visa. He is a class player and we are missing him.”Following the 2012 auction, Kings XI had appeared to be one of the weakest teams, and Mahmood was their highest-profile signing. They struggled in the early part of their campaign, losing two games, and are presently second last in the points table. Kings XI are also without Stuart Broad, who is missing the tournament because of injury.Mahmood is the only player to have represented Pakistan in this season of the IPL. While Pakistan players were part of the inaugural tournament in 2008, they have missed out since then, after cricketing ties between India and Pakistan broke down following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.IPL chairman and BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said earlier this week that the participation of Pakistan cricketers in the tournament was dependent on the resumption of bilateral ties. “No one is against Pakistan or Pakistani players in India, or else we would not have allowed Pakistani commentators or umpires in IPL 5,” he said. “Everything is tied to the resumption of bilateral cricket ties between the two countries. Once that happens, I think everything will happen automatically. The IPL functions under the BCCI and when bilateral relations resume between the two boards, the IPL will also not be a problem for Pakistani players.”

BCCI tells Nimbus to stop Ranji telecast

The BCCI has moved on its decision to scrap the broadcast rights deal with Nimbus Communications by asking it to stop providing the live feed of the Ranji Trophy on Neo Cricket

Nagraj Gollapudi14-Dec-2011The BCCI has moved on its decision to scrap the broadcast rights deal with Nimbus Communications by asking it to stop providing the live feed of the Ranji Trophy on Neo Cricket. This is the first direct fallout of its decision on the rights deal, understood to have been taken on Monday but not yet formally made public by the BCCI.On Tuesday, Neo Cricket had broadcast live the first day’s play of the Ranji Trophy match between Gujarat and Tamil Nadu in Motera, Ahmedabad, but there was no broadcast today. A BCCI official said the Board had “instructed Nimbus Sports Production not to give the feed to Nimbus Sports Media (Neo Cricket) from Wednesday.”Nimbus Sports Production is the production arm of Nimbus Communications and holds the rights for producing domestic cricket till 2014 in India. The BCCI pays Nimbus a fee to produce all matches televised in India, and holds the rights to decide as to whether the matches are in fact telecast. The BCCI has made no formal announcement of the termination of its contract with Nimbus, nor did it issue any instructions to the production company on the first day of the Ranji match, due to which the first day of the match was telecast live. “Even if BCCI says do not give the feed to anyone, the production company will oblige,” the official pointed out.At the moment, there is no clarity on whether the telecast would be resumed. During the second day’s play at the Motera though, it looked as if it was business as usual, with cameras in place and commentators speaking into microphones. The production team went about its business with the footage of the game and the views of the commetators were being being formally recorded, even if only for the BCCI’s archives. The dispute between the BCCI and Nimbus will have an immediate impact on the coverage of the Ranji Trophy, currently in the last two rounds of its league phase with the knockout matches beginning on January 2. A BCCI official said the live coverage was a “priority” and a decision on to how to handle the live coverage of the remaining matches of the Ranji Trophy would be made soon.

Carberry and McKenzie deny Warwickshire

Centuries from Michael Carberry and Neil McKenzie secured a draw for Hampshire at the Rose Bowl – and denied Warwickshire a first County Championship crown since 2004

Michael Carberry hit a superb hundred as Hampshire battled to a draw•Getty ImagesCenturies from Michael Carberry and Neil McKenzie secured a draw for Hampshire at the Rose Bowl – and denied Warwickshire a first County Championship crown since 2004.The hosts, resuming on 43 for 3, got off to a flying start with Carberry and McKenzie – who combined in a record-breaking partnership of 523 against Yorkshire last month – frustrating the Warwickshire bowlers.Within the first hour of the day’s play, the pair had moved Hampshire past three figures, with former England man Carberry finding the boundary with particular fluency. The pair took their partnership past 150 on the stroke of lunch, and in doing so, ensured the title-chasing Bears would need to bat again if they hoped to secure the County Championship title. But any hopes the visitors had of quick wickets after the interval were quickly extinguished, as Carberry and McKenzie continued to frustrate with some dogged batting. Carberry went to a richly-deserved century during the afternoon session from just 152 balls, before eventually falling for a superb 111, when he was harshly adjudged lbw to England paceman Chris Woakes. That ended a fine partnership of 182 between Carberry and McKenzie, who continued to progress serenely at the other end. New batsman James Vince (33) looked confident at the crease, and with McKenzie, he took Hampshire’s lead past 80, before David Metters had him caught on the boundary by Boyd Rankin.Sean Ervine was next in for Hampshire, and together with McKenzie – who moved to his third championship hundred of the season after tea from 211 balls – the pair ground Warwickshire down. The new ball failed to yield any success as Rankin and David Wright laboured on a perfect batting strip. Young spinner Metters raised hopes briefly by removing Ervine and Michael Bates – who bagged a pair in the match – with successive deliveries. But that proved to be the last meaningful acts on a day when Warwickshire took just four of the three wickets they required for victory. At just after 5pm, the captains called the game a draw with Hampshire 158 runs ahead, and McKenzie unbeaten on 115.The draw meant Warwickshire finished the season in second place, and possibly rueing an eight-point deduction accrued earlier in the campaign.

Warne v Tendulkar one last time

Warne has been in the news over the past week for off-field altercations rather than on-field wizardry

Big PictureFour years ago, Shane Warne’s glittering international career came to an end after he helped Australia whip England 5-0 to regain the Ashes, and he contentedly signed off noting that his team owned every major trophy on offer. The finale of his IPL career has been diametrically opposite, with his inconsistent side, Rajasthan Royals, eliminated early and Warne himself has been in the news over the past week for off-field altercations rather than on-field wizardry. There have been glimpses of the old bewitching loop and cricketing nous but that hasn’t been enough to inspire his team to reach the play-offs. Rajasthan have little at stake in Friday’s match against Mumbai Indians and the highlight for cricket aficionados will be the last chance to see the celebrated Warne v Tendulkar rivalry.Mumbai have been off the boil in the past couple of matches and have lost their seemingly nailed-on spot at the top of the table, slipping down to third.
