Marcus Trescothick stays on at Somerset as assistant coach

Two-year deal extends 27-year association, as club legend focuses on 2nd XI development

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Nov-2019Marcus Trescothick will continue his 27-year association with Somerset after being unveiled as a full-time assistant coach.Trescothick, 43, made his Somerset debut in 1993, and retired from the playing staff at the end of the 2019 season, in which he made a final appearance as a substitute fielder during the club’s defeat in their Championship showdown against Essex at Taunton. He retired with a raft of club records, including the most first-class centuries (52) and the most List A runs (7374), and he also took a record 445 first-class catches in his lengthy career. He has now signed a two-year contract to become a fulltime Assistant Coach. His primary duty will be to assist the Second XI Head Coach, Greg Kennis, and work on the development of players who are hoping to establish themselves within the First XI.”I’m absolutely over the moon to have the opportunity to join the coaching set-up here at the Club and I can’t wait to get my teeth in to it,” said Trescothick.”I spent some time in and around the Second XI last season, so I’ve already spent some quality time with the younger players who have just come into the squad. To think that you might be able to help progress someone’s career is a great feeling and it’s something that I’m really looking forward to.”We have a great coaching set-up and I’ve obviously had the opportunity to tap into the expertise of the current coaches. I also did some work with England last year and hopefully I can use some of that knowledge to help benefit the club over the next few years.”Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, said that “the name Marcus Trescothick is synonymous with Somerset Cricket”, and added that he would be given opportunities to work with the first XI in the course of the 2020 season, to pass on the experience gleaned from a hugely successful career that included 76 Tests and 123 ODIs between 2000 and 2006.”His knowledge of the game and what it means to represent this club are a valuable asset and one that we are delighted that we will be able to continue to tap in to,” said Hurry.”Within his job specification there will also be periodic opportunities during the summer for him to support the needs of those players within the current First XI environment.”During the winter he will work alongside the club’s coaches to help to advance our players development. He will also work on all facets of the development of our cricketers both on and off the field.”Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “Myself and Andy Hurry have spent a long time looking at the structure of the club and discussing how we can best support the players. To be able to add someone like Marcus, with all of his experience, to the support staff is really exciting for us. What is great for us is that his coaching journey is in its infancy and he’s really hungry to learn.”Any decision like this is made with the best interests of the club in mind. We are excited to be aiding his coaching development and we will certainly be tapping into his knowledge to help support our young players.”The calibre and diversity of our support staff is really exciting, and it gives the players the best possible chance of success out there in the middle.”

Steven Smith's masterclass gives Australia series lead

It didn’t take long for Steven Smith to clamp down on any whispers he might be surplus to the requirements of the Australian T20I side. A commanding half-century that combined pugnacity and poise in exactly the right doses steered Australia to what ended up being a stroll of a chase against Pakistan with victory by seven wickets. It needn’t have been as easy as that, though, and didn’t look nearly as comfortable when they lost David Warner and Aaron Finch inside the powerplay, more than a hundred runs still to get without the comfort blanket of an explosive Glenn Maxwell in the middle order. It was an innings every bit as modern as T20 cricket requires of its players, but the 51-ball 80 Smith struck contained shots that wouldn’t have been out of place at this year’s Ashes. Eleven fours and a six, exactly a half-century of them, came in boundaries, and by the final two overs, Smith was properly peaking. You almost wished Pakistan, who had done quite well at the end of the first innings to post 150, had put up something more challenging than that, if only to watch a little bit more of the game’s hottest player operating at his best.Steven Smith goes after a short ball•Getty Images

He was helped by the belligerence of Australia’s openers, making their intentions plain as early as the second over. Warner took apart Imad Wasim, normally so reliably economical in the powerplay, finding four fours in what seemed like all four corners of the ground to get Australia off to a flyer, before his run of unbeaten scores was ended by Mohammad Amir. Their dismissals within three overs of each other was, in truth, the only time in the whole contest where it felt Pakistan were within a punter’s chance of making a game of it in Canberra’s first T20I, but having added 48 in the powerplay, Smith knew he could take his time to settle in without the asking rate spiralling out of control.Pakistan’s bowling in the phase right after left something to be desired, though, and Smith was given regular opportunities to relieve the pressure, finding four boundaries in the next three overs. That was in stark contrast to the exceptionally frugal efforts of their Australian counterparts, who executed what looked like well thought out plans to each of Pakistan’s batsman.Babar Azam was denied the fuller lengths that allow him to step into those gorgeous cover drives, some of which he unfurled in the early stages before Australia pushed their lengths back, to immaculate success. Haris Sohail was cramped for room with length deliveries that ended with him skying one in the air in a near-replica to the way he was dismissed in Sydney, while an improved Adam Zampa meant Pakistan didn’t have the release in the middle overs so vital to pushing their score up to 170, close to which appeared par on a cracker of a batting surface.Iftikhar Ahmed gave Pakistan a strong finish•Getty Images

The top order, once more, left Azam on his own to fend off the Australia attack. Fakhar Zaman’s tortured existence at the crease lasted seven balls before driving a catch straight to mid-off, while Mohammad Rizwan struggled with the exact problem his predecessor was criticised so heavily for. The dot balls mounted at his end, only increasing the pressure on Azam to keep the runs flowing. It wasn’t until Iftikhar Ahmed came in at No. 6 that Pakistan took Australia’s bowlers to task; until then, the run rate was barely over a run a ball.Exceptional work in the field saw Azam dismissed for exactly 50, underestimating the strength and accuracy of Warner’s throwing arm as he turned for a second, with the throw from deep midwicket smashing into the stumps with the Pakistan captain well short of his ground. It appeared the end for any sort of competitive score, but Ahmed put on a display of brilliant hitting the top order looked utterly incapable of to make his first half-century. Kane Richardson came in for especially heavy punishment in his final over, which leaked 22, as, against all odds, Pakistan posted 150 thanks to Ahmed’s 34-ball 62.Australia had done enough in the first ten to ensure they never required much explosive hitting to get to the target. The odd boundary was all they needed in the second half of their innings, with a player of Smith’s class comfortably capable of providing that. When he wasn’t playing unseemly, albeit mightily effective, ramp shots and tennis forehands, he was piercing gaps in the offside that barely seemed to exist.A tight 16th over from a much improved Shadab Khan – Pakistan’s best bowler by some distance – was the last time things got slightly hairy for the hosts, with 30 needed off four at that point. Half of those would come in the next over, though, with Smith taking Amir apart while displaying the full array of his capability for good measure. From thereon, Australia would ease home without really getting out of third gear. In truth, that could be said about the entire evening in a somewhat forgettable game, lit up only by the shimmering brilliance of a man fit to play international cricket no matter what the format.

On Tuesday, United revealed the 38-year-old had put pen to paper on a contract until the summer of 2025. After extending his stay at Old Trafford, the veteran, who re-joined his boyhood club in 2021 after spending eight years at the start of his career (2002-10), wants his side to kick on next season.

    WHAT TOM HEATON SAID

Heaton, who is currently with England at the Euros in a training capacity, told United's website: "I am delighted to continue my stay at my boyhood club. I still feel in great shape and I am ready to offer whatever the squad needs throughout the season ahead. In addition to on the pitch, I’m learning so much off it for my next steps, whatever that may be. But, first and foremost, I want to push the squad to build on our successes from last season."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United won the FA Cup last season – a result that effectively saved manager Erik ten Hag's job – but they still finished eighth in the Premier League; their lowest-ever finish since the competition's inception in 1992. If the Dutchman wants to stay in the role, things will have to improve a great deal next term.

Heaton's United side are set to return for pre-season next week, although some will come back later due to international duty. The Red Devils begin their pre-season campaign against Danish team Rosenborg on July 15.

Liverpool star who lost possession 21x flopped vs Norwich

Liverpool progressed through to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a dominant 5-2 victory over Championship side Norwich City on Sunday at Anfield.

It was a relatively comfortable afternoon for the Reds as they strolled to a handsome win, albeit there was a brief scare during the first-half after Ben Gibson equalised to make it 1-1.

Goals from Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez, Jota, Virgil van Dijk, and Ryan Gravenberch secured the club's passage to the next round of the competition but it was right-back Conor Bradley who stole the headlines with his Player of the Match display.

The young defender grasped his opportunity to impress with both hands, which was not the case for forward Cody Gakpo as the Dutch forward flopped against the Canaries.

Gakpo's struggles against Norwich

Liverpool dominated the match and controlled the game with 73% of the ball and 29 shots on goal. Yet, one of their starting forwards failed to contribute with a goal or an assist out of the five scored.

Gakpo did not create a single 'big chance' for his teammates and failed with 12 of his 14 attempted crosses throughout the 90 minutes, whilst he also lost possession a staggering 21 times. Jota and Nunez only gave the ball away 15 times combined.

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo.

His finishing did not make up for his loose and poor play on the ball. The one 'big chance' that did come his way was squandered as the Dutch attacker fired the ball straight at George Long from close range after the ball fell kindly to him.

These statistics show that Gakpo flopped in the final third with a startling lack of quality as a creator and a finisher in front of goal against second division opponents.

The 24-year-old lightweight also struggled with the physicality of the match as he lost 100% (4/4) of his duels throughout the game, which shows that the Championship outfit found it far too easy to get the better of him in 50/50 contests.

Bradley's Player of the Match display

Whilst Gakpo struggled, Bradley caught the eye as ITV named him as their Player of the Match after a superb performance at right-back for the hosts.

The Northern Irish full-back assisted two of Liverpool's five goals with a crisp pass through to Nunez for the second and a brilliant cross for Gravenberch for the fifth.

As you can see from the table above, Bradley was outstanding at both ends of the pitch for Jurgen Klopp with his play in and out of possession to split open the Norwich defence and to cut out opposition counter-attacks.

It was an impressive display that may push him further up the pecking order to gain regular minutes in the Premier League and Europa League over the next five months.

Whereas, Gakpo's poor performance at the top end of the pitch could lessen his chances of starting key games moving forward, as he did not do enough to suggest that Klopp can rely on him.

Graham Potter close to Premier League return with Leicester set to recruit Chelsea flop following Enzo Maresca exit

Graham Potter is reportedly close to a Premier League return with Leicester City emerging as the favourites to recruit the Chelsea flop.

  • Potter is currently a free agent
  • Could get back to management in the next campaign
  • Leceister hold "positive talks" with the manager
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The former Chelsea and Brighton manager has been out of work since April last year after a tumultuous stint at Stamford Bridge. Despite receiving multiple offers to return to management, Potter has been selective, holding out for the right opportunity.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Potter has engaged in promising discussions with Leicester City's ownership. The talks have been fruitful, and it appears that Potter is enthusiastic about leading the newly-promoted club in the Premier League. Leicester's championship victory last season secured their promotion, but they were left without a manager after Enzo Maresca departed to take up the reins at Chelsea earlier this month.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In their search for a new manager, Leicester City considered several candidates, including former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper and West Brom manager Carlos Corberan. However, it is Potter who has emerged as the preferred choice. The club is looking for stability and experience, qualities that Potter demonstrated during his successful tenure at Brighton.

Despite the optimism surrounding Potter's potential appointment, Leicester City faces significant financial challenges. The club is grappling with financial fair play (FFP) issues and could begin the season with a points deduction due to breaches in profit and sustainability rules over recent years. This scenario would present a difficult start for Potter, should he take up the position.

    WHAT NEXT?

Potter has been methodical in his decision-making process since he departed from Chelsea. He recently turned down an opportunity to manage Ajax and also declined Brighton. Should Potter accept the Leicester job, he will be thrust into action when the Foxes host Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, August 19, in the next edition of the Premier League.

Mark Adair, Craig Young in Ireland squad for Lord's Test

It’s a squad that ‘balances experience and emerging talent’ with an eye on the future, explains chairman of selectors Andrew White

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jul-2019Days after being dropped from Ireland’s ODI squad, for the three-match series against Zimbabwe, left-arm spinner George Dockrell has been left out of the long-format squad, too, for the one-off Test against England at Lord’s. James Cameron-Dow, also a left-arm spinner, seamer Barry McCarthy, and wicketkeeper-batsman Stuart Poynter, who were all part of the squad for the Test against Afghanistan in Dehradun earlier this year, have also been left out. Instead, fast bowlers Mark Adair and Craig Young, and wicketkeeper-batsman Gary Wilson have been picked.Ireland squad

While both Adair and Young are uncapped in Test cricket, Wilson had featured in Ireland’s inaugural Test, against Pakistan, last year in Dubin. Seamers Adair and Young have been rewarded for their impressive performances for Ireland A while Poynter was left out in favour of the more experienced Wilson. The four-day Lord’s Test, starting ten days after the World Cup final on July 24, will be Ireland’s 12th international against England. In their first ODI at Lord’s, Ireland were emphatically beaten by Eoin Morgan’s men. But in their most recent ODI exchange in Malahide, Ireland gave England a scare in a low-scorer.ALSO READ: England optimistic of James Anderson’s fitness for Ireland TestAndrew White, the chairman of selectors, took heart from that performance and expected the players to be “just as competitive in the Test arena”.”We have stated all along that as selectors we are looking for players not only in-form but displaying consistent performances, and I believe we have selected a squad that reflects this,” White said. “It’s also a squad that balances experience and emerging talent, which is necessary in looking to the future in this format of the game.”This may only be our third Test, but we have 11 more to play over the next three years and our two Tests to date have shown glimpses of the potential we possess.”

Leeds now in talks to sell "hardworking" Marc Roca in permanent deal

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke will be keen to accelerate his potential plans for the January transfer window and now looks to be well down the line regarding a potential sale at Elland Road, according to a report.

Leeds falter in promotion race with defeat at Preston

Realistically, Farke has to perform something of a squad rebuild upon arrival at Elland Road as he was tasked with the chance of revitalising a club who endured a turbulent campaign last year. At the halfway point of 2023/24, it would have to be deemed that the German coach has done a decent job in his new capacity, with his side well in the race for promotion from the Championship.

49ers express interest in signing "outstanding" new full-back for Leeds

He could return to England for a cut-price fee…

Dec 24, 2023

Summer arrivals like Joel Piroe and Ethan Ampadu have all gone on to become key cogs in his machinery in Yorkshire. At the same time, enhancing existing players' abilities such as Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Daniel James has helped to give the Whites a genuine chance of returning to the English top-flight at the first time of asking – between them, that trio have registered 41 goal contributions this campaign.

However, the Whites faltered on Boxing Day as Illan Meslier was sent off in a 2-1 defeat at Preston, with Liam Millar grabbing a late winner to severely damage Farke's hopes of finishing the campaign in the top two.

Come January, shipping players out of the door will be a useful avenue to generate cash for incoming deals, and the Whites are in an unusually advantageous position concerning potential outgoings due to the large quantity of players who are currently away from Elland Road on a loan basis. Now, it looks as if one loanee is now well on his way to departing Leeds on a permanent deal ahead of the January window, according to a report.

Marc Roca could leave Leeds United permanently…

According to Football Insider, Leeds and Real Betis are in talks regarding a permanent deal for Marc Roca, who joined the La Liga outfit in the summer window on loan.

The report states that Roca is keen to leave Elland Road for good and has instructed his agent to sever ties with the Whites following his departure earlier this year that came about due to a relegation release clause. Spending just one season in Yorkshire, the 27-year-old has since gone on to be a key player at the Benito Villamarin Stadium, featuring regularly in the Spanish top-flight and Europa League.

Leeds United defender Marc Roca.

Labelled "hardworking" by former boss Julian Nagelsmann, Roca has appeared on 25 occasions this campaign across all competitions, registering two goals and four assists (Roca statistics – Transfermarkt).

Nevertheless, his time at his parent club looks to be coming to an end and selling him would allow Leeds to recoup some of the £10 million they paid to sign him for back in 2022 from Bayern Munich.

Leeds to secure off-field deal with target set to join at end of January

Leeds United will be keen to make moves in the transfer market this window and now look set to wrap up an important piece of off-field business at Elland Road towards the end of the month.

Leeds United January rumours…

Following a period of keen anticipation, Leeds United alongside others are now well underway in the transfer window and they will be looking to conclude deals to finalise both incomings and outgoings in order to balance their squad depth.

Daniel Farke has indicated that he is happy with the options at his disposal, though he hasn't ruled out adding to his side over the next few weeks, as he stated in a recent press conference:

"I'm happy with our squad. I think we have a pretty balanced squad and in all areas. There's not one particular position where you think okay, there is definitely a need that you have to do something. But again, it's also I think, professional to stay awake and also to check if there are some options."

Leeds United want to sign "dangerous" new full-back in £8m+ transfer

Hellas Verona defender Josh Doig and Bournemouth winger David Brooks were named as early targets for the Whites this month; however, it remains to be seen whether Farke will act to bring them in to try and aid his side's quest for promotion from the Championship.

In other news, Leeds United are also believed to be waiting in the wings for Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore, though the Bournemouth man is also attracting interest from Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Despite all focus being on dealings in the transfer market, news has emerged detailing that the 49ers Enterprises appear to have made an off-field appointment at Elland Road.

Leeds United set to hire Jordan Miles

According to Football Scotland reporter Mark Hendry, Leeds United are set to hire Aberdeen recruitment chief Jordan Miles and plan to offer him a major role in their transfer negotiations this summer after initially targeting him last month. The 33-year-old only joined the Dons from West Ham United in the summer; however, he is now expected to depart the Granite City for a compensation fee to take up a position at Elland Road.

One key caveat to the deal is that he will remain in post at Aberdeen until the end of the month despite attempts from the Whites to bring him south of the border before the window's conclusion. Nevertheless, they will need to wait to get their man, who will be tasked in the immediate term with trying to seek additions to help his current employers rise up the Scottish Premiership table.

Recruitment has improved at Leeds United since Nick Hammond arrived last summer as interim football advisor and shrewd signings such as Joel Piroe, Sam Byram and Ethan Ampadu have gone on to make a marked impact at the club.

Now, the 49ers look to have landed a key appointment as they aim to restore Leeds United's status as a club capable of competing in the top bracket of English football.

Everton must act fast in race for Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton

Everton are interested in signing an exciting young player with "Champions League level" quality on the ball, according to a fresh transfer update, but they are falling behind in the race.

Everton transfer news

The Blues have an important month ahead of them, not only in terms of further pulling away from the Premier League relegation zone, but also when it comes to completing new signings. Sean Dyche will surely be eyeing up reinforcements between now and the end of the January transfer window, and plenty of players have been name-checked as financially viable additions.

That includes Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill, who the Everton manager worked with for a long time at Turf Moor, and a loan move has been mooted. Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri has also emerged as a temporary option in the middle of the park, with the Blues battling it out with Sevilla to get their man.

Talleres winger Ramon Sosa is a more unknown player who has been linked with a switch to Goodison Park, too, so the club certainly appear to be looking at adding some youth to their ranks.

Everton fall behind Spurs in Adam Wharton race

According to a new update from Football Insider, Everton are interested in signing Blackburn Rovers youngster Adam Wharton, but Tottenham and Crystal Palace are also firmly in the mix, and Kevin Thelwell will need to act fast as the north London outfit are "stepping up" their interest.

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton.

"Tottenham are stepping up their interest in Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton, sources have told Football Insider. Spurs scouts have regularly watched the 19-year-old in action – with Everton and Crystal Palace also keen on the highly-rated, top young player.

"A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Tottenham recruitment chiefs feel Wharton is a potential star in the making."

Wharton looks like a player of enormous potential, already becoming an undoubted key player for Blackburn and starting 20 Championship games for them this season. In that time, the 19-year-old has assisted three times and chipped in with one goal, and he has also averaged 2.3 tackles per game. The young Englishman has had praise heaped on him by Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, too, who has said of his talented midfielder:

"Adam, on the ball, he has a Champions League level. I've been a Champions League player myself, I've coached in the Champions League so I know what you need."

This says so much about the long-term potential that Wharton possesses, and if Everton could beat others to his signature this month, it would represent a hugely exciting piece of business.

The Blackburn ace is still maturing as a player, so it would be unfair to expect him to come straight in as a superstar for the Blues, but the quality he is already performing with at a good standard suggests he could become a fixture in Dyche's team in a relatively short space of time.

Man Utd plot player swap deal to sign Everton star who Ten Hag loves

BySean Markus Clifford Jan 9, 2024

Wharton only signed a new deal at Ewood Park last month, keeping him there until the summer of 2028, so a hefty bid may be required to prise him away. He could be worth every penny, though, should he keep developing at his current rate.
