The New Zealand captain’s action had been reported during the Galle Test in August earlier this year

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson’s bowling action is legal again, the ICC confirmed, following an assessment in Loughborough on October 11.Williamson had been reported during the Galle Test in August earlier this year. He bowled three overs of offspin in that game, conceding nine runs without taking a wicket. But now, following a test in an ICC-accredited bio-mechanics centre, it was found that the elbow extension of all his deliveries was within the permissible 15-degree level of tolerance. This was the second time that Williamson’s bowling action had come under scrutiny. He was reported in 2014 and had to make some changes before he could bowl in international cricket again.Williamson is currently nursing a hip injury that had sidelined him from the ongoing five-match T20I series at home against England but, with the ICC clearing his action, he can bowl again when he returns to play for New Zealand.

India, New Zealand remain unbeaten as rain forces another washout

The tournament had its third abandoned match as India-New Zealand fixture was called off without even a toss

The Report by Varun Shetty13-Jun-2019

India v New Zealand
As it happenedIndia and New Zealand took a point each and remained the only unbeaten teams in the tournament as rain prevented even a toss from happening at Trent Bridge. As things stood before the match, a result would have either further solidified New Zealand’s position at the top, or helped India nudge ahead of Australia into second place with a game in hand. There were large patches of damp turf in the point and midwicket regions, results of water rolling off the covers, which were on and off intermittently through the day. The sun didn’t come out all day and at the end of it, after several inspections, umpire Paul Reiffel declared at 3pm that the “weather had beaten us”.The abandonment follows an uninspiring trend this week, where two games have failed to start and one was called off less than an hour into play. The three abandoned games in this World Cup are an anomaly as far as this tournament goes, considering there were only two before this edition, since its start in 1975.Both teams would have been happy with the point, but India in particular would have liked to take some momentum from this game, given their upcoming blockbuster fixture against Pakistan on Sunday. But Virat Kohli admitted after the match that the right decision had been made.

'Can I break into the ODI team? Probably not' – Ben Foakes realistic after dream debut

Ben Foakes admitted he has little chance of breaking into England’s limited-overs team despite leading them to victory on debut in Dublin.Foakes made an unbeaten 61 – the only half-century of the match – to help England secure a win that looked unlikely when they subsided to 66 for 5 within 15 overs of their reply. Keeping wonderfully calm despite the apparently hopeless position, Foakes added 98 in 15 overs with Tom Curran for the seventh wicket to see his side home. It meant that he followed the Man-of-the-Match award he won on Test debut with another such award in his first ODI. He is set to make his T20I debut on Sunday in Cardiff. But, as he has seen from his Test career, that is no guarantee of longevity. And despite finishing his maiden Test series in Sri Lanka as England’s Man of the Series, Foakes was dropped after two more games in the Caribbean as England struggled to balance their side. With Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow, who have both been rested following their IPL stints, to come back into the side in the coming days, he knows there is a chance he may never play again.”Can I break into the team? Probably not,” Foakes said. “Jos is probably the best keeper-batsman in the world and Jonny is probably second, if not first. It’s ridiculous.”So just to get the game has been great. It’s something I didn’t expect. I didn’t really think I’d make my debut.”While Foakes is probably right in the short term – there were seven first-choice England players missing from this side, after all, and he was only called up when one of their replacements, Sam Billings, suffered an injury – he did show the skills that this England side has sometimes lacked in recent times.Adapting to the slow surface, he was content to rotate the strike and pick up singles for an unusually long time in modern ODI cricket – his first boundary, a pulled six off Boyd Rankin, came from the 57th delivery he faced – and he showed an unflustered temperament that was a little reminiscent of MS Dhoni. There have been a few times in the recent past that England could have benefited from such composure.”It was one of those rebuilding jobs and I guess that suited my game a little bit,” Foakes said. “I just had to get my head down and fight it out. It was a bit of a grind.”Whenever you lose that many wickets early, you’ve got a job to do to stick in there and not get out. There were a few nerves, but there was never a stage where the run rate was getting out of hand. The guys like Tim Murtagh and the slower bowlers were tough work on that sort of wicket, so the job was to see them off, try not to get out, and when a bit of pace came on, get a bit more value for your shots.”At one stage with Foakes at the crease, England scored just nine runs in six overs with Murtagh and George Dockrell – their bowling speeds around 14 mph apart – bowling their allocation of nine overs each for a combined total of just 56 runs. But with both bowled out with eight overs remaining and Ireland obliged to rely on two debutants in Mark Adair and the impressive Josh Little, Foakes always had confidence in himself and his lower-order colleagues to get the job done. Adil Rashid (10 first-class centuries), Liam Plunkett (three) and Jofra Archer were all still to bat.”Plunkett was coming in No.11 today, so I knew we batted deep,” Foakes said. “In that sort of situation you know what the job is, you don’t go too far out of your comfort zone. It’s just about soaking up the pressure.”Foakes also completed a stumping to dismiss the dangerous Andy Balbirnie. While most of the talk around the dismissal concerned the amount of time Foakes waited for Balbirnie to raise his back leg – Ireland captain William Porterfield subsequently claimed “the ball was pretty much dead” – what was perhaps more significant was the smooth way Foakes collected the leg-side wide.ALSO READ: Archer shows glimpses on debut but rivals raise their game“It was quite wide down leg,” Foakes said, “but I got it back to the stumps. When it’s a sweep you think they might fall over and I just saw he lifted his foot and nicked them off.”While Porterfield admitted the match felt “like the one that got away”, he said he was “proud” of his team and accepted that, in retrospect, he should have called for a review when Foakes was adjudged not out to a leg-before appeal when he had scored 37. Hawk-Eye replays subsequently showed that, had Ireland called for the review, Foakes would have been out.”We should have reviewed it,” he said. “But there were only about 10 overs left and you don’t know if you’re going to get another chance? It probably looked as high as any of them but it was red. If I could go back an hour I’d be reviewing it.”Meanwhile, another debutant, Dawid Malan, sustained a groin injury while batting and will be unavailable* for Sunday’s T20I in Cardiff. Sussex’s Phil Salt has been called up in his place as cover.*May 4, 1000 BST – This story was updated with confirmation of Malan’s replacement

Pole position: Southampton leading the race to sign “quality” new teenager

Southampton are leading the race to bring an exciting teenager to the Championship, according to a fresh report this week.

Southampton winning race for exciting Whitmarsh

The St. Mary’s Stadium outfit have made an impressive start to the new campaign having won 11, drawn five and lost just four of their opening 20 games, meaning that they currently find themselves fourth in the second-tier table. While Sport Republic and Russell Martin will be assessing their options in the market as to who they could strengthen their ranks with in the here and now, they will also no doubt have an eye on up-and-coming prospects who could be recruited to build the long-term future of the club.

Southampton now eyeing January move to sign "aggressive" player for Martin

The Saints could boost their promotion chances…

By
Tom Cunningham

Dec 10, 2023

Cork City central midfielder Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh has emerged as a potential target, with the 18-year-old having worked his way up through his club’s various academy ranks to get promoted to their first-team, where he’s made 27 appearances across all age levels to date (Transfermarkt – Whitmarsh statistics).

The Republic of Ireland youth international does have a contract with his childhood side, but with the length of his deal unknown as it stands, as per the above outlet, his potential availability has gained the attention of the hierarchy on the south coast who are close to securing his services ahead of January.

According to The Sun, Southampton are set to sign Whitmarsh ahead of their competitors, with a small price set to be paid immediately in order to get the deal over the line: “Southampton are ready to snap up teenage Irish midfielder Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh from Cork City. The 18-year-old will cost a six-figure fee up front and is fancied by many.”

Southampton's St. Mary's Stadium.

Whitmarsh can be a "quality" addition

While Southampton might not throw Whitmarsh straight in at the deep end and into the starting line-up, Martin will know that he’s got bags of potential to offer which he’s already been showing, so he could be an extremely exciting signing for the club in years to come.

Cork’s starlet has posted five contributions (four goals and one assist) in 27 appearances since the start of his career, showing that he can make a positive impact in the final third, but he’s also more than comfortable playing in several other areas of the pitch.

The Saints target is a versatile operator having been deployed in four different positions already since his arrival on the professional scene, including three roles in the midfield and even as a right-back, making him a useful option to have in the building should any unexpected injuries occur.

As described by Cork’s assistant turned caretaker manager Richie Holland, Whitmarsh is a “quality” player and he is a diamond who is starting to show how brightly he can shine, so with this being a situation that is expected to develop quickly, this could be one to keep a close eye on in the weeks ahead.

Siddle admits lack of cricket has been tough

His appearance for Adelaide Strikers in their heavy defeat against Sydney Sixers was just his seventh outing since the end of the November

Being part of Australia’s Test squad this season has been a double-edged sword for Peter Siddle, putting him closer to adding to his 64 caps but also limiting his time actually playing.Siddle’s appearance for Adelaide Strikers in their heavy defeat against Sydney Sixers at the SCG was just his seventh outing since the end of the November – four have come in the Big Bash and three in the ODI series against India as he ended an eight-year absence from the Australia one-day side.Siddle was not lamenting being around the international set-up again, but he admitted it was a challenge remaining in rhythm while flying back and forth for the occasional BBL appearance. He will link back up with the Test squad in Canberra on Wednesday morning and is likely to miss the Strikers’ next match as it is the day before the second Test. Then if, as expected, he isn’t required he will aim to play the final two group matches although the Strikers have all-but seen their title defence come to an end with the defeat in Sydney.”It’s been good to be around the Australian set-up, but think I’ve played my seventh game in white-ball in two months so there’s not a lot of cricket being played,” he said. “It has been hard to fly in and play games, that’s no excuse but not the greatest preparation over the last few weeks.”I’m feeling good, bowling plenty with the red ball just not in games at the moment. It’s feeling good if I get the opportunity in Canberra but it’s probably going to be the same XI so I’ll probably miss out.”Despite being around the Test squad all season, Siddle was leapfrogged by Jhye Richardson for a place in Brisbane after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out. Richardson impressed with five wickets on debut to put himself in prime position for an Ashes berth, but despite his lack of recent cricket Siddle is not concerned about it impacting his chances of going to England.”It was disappointing to miss out last week, but I’m doing all I can,” he said. “It’s not too bad, there’s still four Shield games to go then I go over and play county cricket for two or three months before the Ashes anyway. Think my record over there speaks for itself, I’m not too worried about preparation for that.”It’s just tough at the moment trying to get some game time, flying in and out, specifically for the Strikers the games haven’t lined up well with the Tests so that’s been the hardest part so it has been tough. It is always nice to come back and play these games, get a little bit of cricket under my belt.”Though Siddle talked about a two or three month pre-Ashes spell with Essex that would be significantly reduced if he were part of the World Cup squad. Australia’s final 15, which has to be named by April 23, will have a training camp in Brisbane during early May before heading to the UK for the tournament which runs until mid-July.An in-house warm-up match involving Australia A in late July will be the main Ashes preparation. Those not involved in the World Cup, and on the fringes of the Test squad, will have two other four-day matches as part of the Australia A tour. Justin Langer said they were likely to leave naming the Ashes squad until quite late to assess form in those A-team games.

Agent working on Man Utd agreement for Casemiro to join PSG in January

Manchester United aren't exactly famous for getting things right in the transfer market these days, with the Red Devils welcoming some signings to forget over the years. And whilst the potential arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the structure he will bring to the club could help finally push the Manchester club into modern football, towards suitable signing, he will first have the job of clearing any deadwood out of Old Trafford for Erik ten Hag.

When the January transfer window swings open, if Ratcliffe has sealed his deal to land 25% of Manchester United by then, his focus may well need to be on sales rather than incomings. Among those departures looks likely to be one particular midfielder who only signed for the club in the summer of 2022.

Man Utd transfer news

If Manchester United want to turn their season around, then January must be a busy month of both departures and key incomings. As things stand, the Red Devils sit six points adrift of the Premier League's top four, having recently been embarrassed 3-0 at Old Trafford by Bournemouth. With Liverpool and a trip to Anfield waiting too, things are unlikely to get better any time soon. Perhaps summing things up amid their poor form is the recent news that one star player could be set to leave next month.

According to Sports Zone, via The Sun, Paris Saint-Germain want to sign Casemiro, whose agent is actually already working on an agreement to seal a January move. The Brazilian has also reportedly attracted interest from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, as well as an unnamed Serie A club.

Casemiro has struggled with injuries and form throughout the current campaign and could now leave Old Trafford just over a year since his big-money arrival from Real Madrid. When the winter window opens, it will certainly be interesting to see if the serial winner faces any resistance over a potential exit.

Stats show Casemiro has struggled this season

Like most of his Manchester United teammates, Casemiro's form has dropped significantly this season. The Brazilian has been part of a side who have gone from winning the Carabao Cup and finishing inside the top four to a side convincingly falling to defeat against the likes of bottom-half Bournemouth. It once looked as though things were only just getting started for Ten Hag and Casemiro at United. Now, it looks like it could be the beginning of the end for both men. Here's how Casemiro's current stats compare to last season:

It's no surprise that the Brazilian was at the centre of praise upon his arrival from Real Madrid, including from Ten Hag, who told ITV, via Sky Sports: "We know he's a great player. In that midfield in Madrid, with Kroos and Modric, it was great. We see offensively he has a part [to play]. What I like is dynamic football with variations, with many position switches. We have to [make] the opponent think so we can take benefit of it."
