Celtic eyeing player with "huge potential" ahead of possible January move

Despite losing Ange Postecoglou in the summer, who has got off to a blistering start at Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic are on course for a third consecutive title in the Scottish Premiership. Their transition during the return of Brendan Rodgers has been seamless and the former Leicester City boss hasn't skipped a beat since making the move back to the place where he had so much success. He won't want to rest on his laurels, though. Instead, Rodgers will only want to kick on further at Celtic Park.

Celtic transfer news

As things stand, the Hoops are five points clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers and are reportedly eyeing a move to improve their side even more during the January transfer window.

Celtic stars Matt O'Riley and Luis Palma.

Celtic's work off the pitch has been almost perfect in the last few years. They've added the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and Matt O'Riley, who have both since gone onto play crucial roles at the club. And their attention now looks set to turn towards the January transfer window, which can often make or break a club's season. From Celtic's perspective, they shouldn't need too much when it comes to reinforcements, given their place at the top of the league, but they could still add stars for the future, including Nathaniel Adjei.

According to Sky Sports, Celtic are monitoring Adjei, who has been impressing for Swedish side Hammarby. The 21-year-old is reportedly not short on suitors, however, with clubs in Belgium and Italy, as well as Celtic's Old Firm rivals Rangers, reportedly eyeing a move for the central defender in January.

Defensively, the league leaders have been excellent so far this season, conceding just seven goals in 11 games. That said, with the potential that Adjei holds, it could be a deal worth pursuing. The Allsvenskan season comes to an end this month, giving Adjei plenty of time to assess his options before making what should prove to be a crucial career decision.

Nathaniel Adjei has "huge potential"

At just 21-years-old, Adjei seemingly has the world at his feet, evidenced by reports he will have the option of clubs from across Europe, including Celtic. Under Rodgers, he could learn a great deal from the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales too, who have ensured that the Hoops' defensive record has remained impressive this season.

It's no surprise that Adjei has earned plenty of praise at his current club, including from former Hammarby sporting director Jesper Jansson, who told the club's official website: "Adjei has had a very good development in HTFF. He is a centre-back with huge potential who looks very exciting for the future, and we have made the decision to buy him from his Ghanaian club."

The fact that Adjei is now being linked with a move to a number of top clubs just a year after his promotion to the Swedish side's first-team shows just how rapidly he is developing as a player. The only way seems to be up for the central defender, and Celtic may need to act quickly to secure his signature.

A six-wicket haul from New South Wales veteran Trent Copeland put their game against South Australia on a knife’s edge heading into the final day at Adelaide Oval. The Redbacks had built a platform to set up a big lead early on the third day. Daniel Sams made the early breakthrough by removing Callum Ferguson for 36. Copeland then claimed Jake Lehmann for 61.Tom Cooper and Harry Neilsen put together a 42-run stand before Steve O’Keefe pinned Cooper lbw for 40.Copeland then went to work, bagging the next four scalps as South Australia managed only a 27-run first-innings lead. Copeland finished with 6 for 86 from 30 overs, his 17th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket.New South Wales reclaimed the lead but Chadd Sayers kept their progression in check, removing Daniel Hughes and Kurtis Patterson cheaply. Moises Henriques was bowled by Nick Winter for 12 to leave the game precariously placed. Nick Larkin remained 30 not out with the Blues just 57 runs in front with seven wickets in hand heading into the final day.

Somerset defiant as Azhar Ali holds up Surrey

ScorecardSurrey were frustrated by the weather and some stiff Somerset resistance on the third day of the Specsavers County Championship match at Taunton.By the close of a day limited to 49.3 overs by rain and bad light, the hosts had reached 168 for three in their second innings and required a further 171 to avoid an innings defeat. The match looked set to end inside three days when Somerset crashed to four for two, following on, Marcus Trescothick bagging a pair when dismissed by Morne Morkel for the second time in the match. But from there the home side found a resolve that was missing from their first innings batting, James Hildreth making 60 and Azhar Ali ending the day unbeaten on 61.Overnight rain prevented play getting underway until noon and when it did Somerset’s last wicket pair of Josh Davey and Jack Leach added 24 before Davey looked to drive Morkel and was caught at point by Mark Stoneman.Somerset were all out for 146 and were soon in trouble in their second innings as Morkel bowled Trescothick in the opening over.Tom Banton hit a sweet on-drive for four off Tom Curran, but was bowled next ball and the hosts’ brittle batting in recent games looked set to repeat itself.Surrey could sense victory in the air as Hildreth walked out to the middle to join Azhar. Bu the third-wicket pair gradually grew in confidence and in the 13th over a blistering cover drive from Azhar off Conor McKerr saw the Somerset 50 up.The duo continued to prosper and Hildreth went to his half-century with a single off McKerr to square cover, his runs coming off 68 balls with eight fours. Two overs later Azhar edged McKerr to the third-man boundary to bring up 100, shortly after which the players left the field for bad light for an early tea. When play resumed only two more balls were possible before the players went off again due to more bad light. After an hour, play resumed with the loss of 16 further overs. Tom Curran switched to the Somerset Pavilion End and in his second over made the vital breakthrough when he tempted Hildreth to drive at a fuller ball and edge to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes. In his next over Curran was unlucky to have Azhar put down at second slip when he was on 30. The former Pakistan captain survived and rode his luck, taking two boundaries to deep backward square leg in the young paceman’s next over.Azhar went to his fifty with a boundary to backward square off McKerr, having faced 97 balls and hit nine fours.Somerset had moved onto 168 for three off 42.2 overs, when bad light stopped play bringing an early close to proceedings, by which time Azhar and Tom Abell (21 not out) had added 61.

Chelsea threw £50m down with nightmare signing in 2017

Chelsea transformed into a powerhouse when Roman Abramovich arrived at the club in 2003, flexing his deep pockets in the transfer window and bringing a whole host of stars to Stamford Bridge.

In the mid-2000s, his appointment of Jose Mourinho, famously known as the "Special One" was the catalyst to achieving success as the eccentric Portuguese delivered back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.

Backed by a spine of world-class talent, namely Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, that quartet helped deliver a glittering decade of success, including a Champions League triumph in 2012.

During that period, the club were relishing their tussles with Manchester United at the top of the table, prior to Manchester City forming a winning juggernaut that continues to flex their domestic and European dominance.

Chelsea can only dream of replicating that success now and although Todd Boehly has spent over £1bn since taking over the reins from Abramovich in May last year, Mauricio Pochettino's side are still no closer to challenging Man City for the title.

Overspending for the sake of isn't just an issue that has popped up since the club's ownership changed hands, it was prominent during the Russian's tenure, as the Blues made countless errors in the transfer window and one of those was the decision to sign Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City in 2017.

How much did Chelsea sign Danny Drinkwater for?

Danny Drinkwater and N'Golo Kante's indispensable partnership was crucial in landing Leicester their fairytale Premier League title in 2016.

Kante's ability to break up play and Drinkwater's exceptional passing range created the perfect blend and offered Claudio Ranieri's side a solid platform to build from.

Danny-drinkwater

The Frenchman, in particular, caught the eye with his monstrous ball-winning abilities as he ranked higher than anyone in the league that season for interceptions (156) and tackles (175), earning him a £30m transfer to Chelsea that summer.

Kante ended up proving to be instrumental in luring the Premier League title back to Stamford Bridge as Antonio Conte's first season in charge was a resounding success.

Following that triumph, the Italian was hungry for more silverware and spent a whopping £224m (€260m) on a whole host of talent, including a £35m deal to prise Drinkwater away from Leicester in the hopes of rekindling a title-winning partnership.

Instead, the Englishman's time at Stamford Bridge unravelled into a nightmare.

What happened to Danny Drinkwater at Chelsea?

Drinkwater rose to prominence as an excellent deep-lying maker during his time at Leicester. He exhumed calmness in possession and controlled the tempo of football matches with his brilliant passing range.

Chelsea thought the midfielder could become their conductor in midfield alongside Kante and bring his wealth of Premier League and Champions League experience to the party, however, the legacy he left behind in west London is one he'd want to forget.

Danny Drinkwater for Chelsea

In five years at the club, which included loan spells at Burnley, Aston Villa and Reading, the 32-year-old only made 23 appearances and bled the club dry in excess of £50m, when adding together his initial transfer fee and the amount of wages he earned, as per Capology.

Weekly wage: £98,000

Yearly wage: £5.1m

Total wage accrued: £15.3m (excluding time on loan)

Cost per game: £2.1m

Data via Capology

Going down as one of the worst signings in Premier League history is a tag nobody wants, but Drinkwater's time on the pitch spiralled into a nightmare time off it as he claimed to have wasted potentially some of the best years of his career and revealed how it impacted his mental health.

In an interview with Sky Sports, he commented: "When football is going well, everything else seems easier to deal with, but when this isn't going so well, everything seems so heavy. I definitely think that's the lowest I'd been."

Drinkwater's struggles at Chelsea are a timely reminder that footballers are only human and personal issues off the field can quickly get in the way of performances on it and unfortunately, the 6-foot flop fell victim to this narrative.

Everton: Toffees in discussions over unique deal involving current player

Sean Dyche could do with all the options that he can get at Everton, who have got off to a rocky start this season, winning just once. That sole win did, at least, come in their most recent outing in the Premier League against Brentford, perhaps proving that they are about to turn a crucial corner in their campaign.

What has helped their resurgent form is the goals of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is finally injury free and on his way back to his best form – something that could keep the Toffees' top flight status intact.

The forward could be boosted by the return of another player, too, and one that Everton are reportedly negotiating a complicated deal around.

What's the latest Everton news?

Buoyed by their victory in the Carabao Cup against Aston Villa, Everton will now turn their attention towards Luton Town in the Premier League, hoping to make it three consecutive victories for the first time this season.

Meanwhile, off the pitch, those at Goodison Park have reportedly got negotiations under way over the future of Dele Alli, who continues to edge closer to a return from issues away from the pitch and injuries.

Speaking about the saga for The Athletic, Patrick Boyland said: "Those talks (with Spurs) are already underway but are yet to reach a resolution.

"Everton’s argument, no doubt, will be that this is a unique situation and that the best thing for Dele is to play. The deal does not incentivise that, with a £10million ($12.2m) fee due to Tottenham when he hits 20 games. He is on 13.

"He also needs to get himself fit again. The injury in pre-season was a blow because he was training well and close to a return. Dyche will try to fit him in and Dele may end up being an option in Abdoulaye Doucoure’s role behind the striker. A lot needs to happen before we get there, though."

Should Everton get Dele back in the team?

Everton midfielder Dele Alli.

Dele has had far from the easiest spell at Everton, with issues off the pitch playing a part in his failure to find his feet at Goodison Park, or in his loan spell at Besiktas. But, ultimately, this is a player who once set the world alight at Tottenham Hotspur; a player who won the PFA Young Player of the Year award. And, if Everton can get that version of Dele, then they'll arguably have one of England's best midfielders.

Of course, there is no guarantee that they will get the best out of the former Spurs man. Yet, in truth, given their slow start this season, taking a risk on a player who once had so much potential may well be worth it.

Only time will tell whether Dele gets another opportunity on the pitch at Everton, however, and, for now, his focus will be on getting back to full fitness, and working his way into Dyche's plans. With negotiations seemingly underway over his deal, too, it may not be long before we see Dele take to the Goodison Park turf once again.

Man United players unhappy with treatment of second star alongside Sancho

Manchester United are in the midst of a horrible run of form and it has now been revealed that their squad are unhappy about the treatment of another forgotten man.

What's the latest news involving Manchester United?

As per The Daily Star, Manchester United would be willing to sell Jadon Sancho for a cut-price fee in January in light of his recent bust-up with Erik ten Hag, which has yet to yield a resolution for either party.

The report states that Manchester United would now be willing to sell him to the 'highest bidder' once the new transfer window opens; however, his former club, Borussia Dortmund, have ruled out making a dramatic swoop for his services. Apparently United's players are also unhappy about the treatment of the winger, and "disagree" with his exile.

Manchester United now face Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday as they bid to get back to winning ways following three consecutive losses in all competitions, and opposition manager Vincent Kompany has had his day on the current situation at Old Trafford.

Cited via BBC Sport, Kompany stated: "I have been at a big club before. I know how it is when you lose a couple of games – the pressure can mount. When in a top club you are always one loss away from a crisis. That doesn't just have to be United – it is the same in every top club."

In terms of Red Devils' team news heading into this weekend, Raphael Varane and Mason Mount could potentially return to first-team contention following spells out injured since before the international break.

Sofyan Amrabat has returned to training and may be available to make his debut at Turf Moor, which would give Ten Hag a major boost in midfield, as per The Manchester Evening News.

What else are United's players unhappy about?

According to The Sun, Manchester United's players are also 'fuming' at how veteran goalkeeper David De Gea was treated in the midst of his exit from Old Trafford at the end of last term.

The Spaniard was believed to be very popular among his peers and won the Premier League Golden Glove award in 2022/23; however, he is still a free agent despite the summer transfer window closing three weeks ago and is still looking for a new club.

Man United's David De Gea

Over the course of his time at the Premier League giants, De Gea made 545 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions, keeping 190 clean sheets in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Reports in Spain via JOE claim that De Gea could be offered a route back into football by La Liga side Real Betis, while Valencia are also believed to be in the running to sign the former Atletico Madrid stopper.

Andre Onana has replaced De Gea's presence at Manchester United and is now under the spotlight himself due to an error in the Champions League against Bayern Munich that enabled Leroy Sane to open the scoring in an encounter that finished 4-3 to the Bundesliga champions, as per ESPN.

Man Utd: Ten Hag’s "weak link" has rinsed the club for 111 weeks

Manchester United’s recent defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League saw them enter the international break occupying 11th spot in the league table, already six points behind Manchester City.

Erik ten Hag would have been hoping the momentum that was gathered during the final few months of the 2022/23 campaign, which saw the Red Devils win their first piece of silverware in six years combined with Champions League qualification, was going to enable them to begin the current season in a productive manner.

The Old Trafford side made seven new signings during the summer transfer window, bringing in Andre Onana, Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, Jonny Evans, Altay Bayindir, Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon, and it’s fair to say it wasn’t quite the window many of the supporters were anticipating.

Only Onana has made an impact thus far, with Mount playing only twice and Hojlund making his first appearance against Arsenal. Ten Hag will be hoping it is money well spent following years of big-money signings letting the club down.

One name that immediately springs to mind is Jadon Sancho, who has endured a poor start to the current campaign and has failed to live up to the staggering amount that United shelled out on him just two years ago.

What is Jadon Sancho’s salary at Manchester United?

The Englishman had emerged as one of the most talented youngsters on the continent during his spell at Borussia Dortmund, registering an impressive 114 goal contributions – 50 goals and 64 assists – across just 137 games for the club, winning the German cup too in what was a highly productive four-season spell.

jadon-sancho

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed the winger in the summer of 2021 for a fee in the region of £73m and this was a lot of pressure to heap on a player who was only 21-years-old.

That pressure and expectancy were likely only heightened by the reported £250k-per-week wage that the fleet-footed trickster has been on since his arrival two years ago, according to Capology.

How much has Jadon Sancho earned so far at Manchester United?

The youngster has been at the club for a total of 111 weeks and during that time, he has roughly earned an eye-watering £26m in wages alone at United.

Combine this with his transfer fee of £73m and Sancho has already cost the Old Trafford side just shy of £100m at £99m and judging by his form for the club since arriving, this has turned out to be a colossal waste of money.

The winger has a contract until 2026, meaning he still has three years to continue rinsing the club unless they move him on.

Jadon Sancho

A move to Saudi Arabia fell through at the last minute earlier this week, and he will remain in Manchester until January at least, ensuring Ten Hag will need to find a way to get the best out of him.

Does Jadon Sancho deserve £250k-per-week?

Upon his arrival, it looked like United had signed a player who has the potential to turn into one of the next big superstars, especially going by his record in Germany and his meteoric rise since leaving Man City in 2017 to take a chance at the Bundesliga outfit.

Across 38 games during his first season, he scored just five goals and grabbed three assists, which was a large drop-off from the 26 goal contributions he had recorded during his last season in Dortmund.

His form may have been down to the fact he was a newcomer in a league which he hadn’t played in before and while the massive transfer fee may also have played a part, it was clear that things weren’t going as anticipated and perhaps Ten Hag had a solution.

Indeed, Sancho scored winning goals against Liverpool and Leicester City as he played the full 90 minutes in Ten Hag’s first seven league matches in charge, while also scoring in the Europa League, and it appeared as though progress was being made.

As the World Cup loomed on the horizon, Sancho began to lose some of his earlier momentum and was even dubbed as United’s “weak link” by Tom McDermott in October last year.

After the match against West Ham United on 30 October, Sancho didn’t turn out for the club again until the following February, even missing a place in the England squad for the World Cup.

It wasn’t due to an injury however, but more so a lack of form which meant he was dropped, and then he subsequently lost his fitness in the process.

The winger finally made his comeback and netted four goals before the end of the season, but he still came under some criticism from former United star Paul Scholes following the defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League, who said:

"During the warm-ups we were eulogising about the crowd and saying how aggressive and hostile it was.

"When the United players see and hear that, they need to go into the dressing room and think, 'I need to be ready for this and my first touch has got to be ready.

"You see Jadon Sancho in the first five minutes tonight, the ball bounced off him three times, terrible weight of pass, too. I’m a big fan of the lad, but you’ve got to liven up and be ready."

Does Jadon Sancho have a future at Manchester United?

The 23-year-old has failed to start a league match so far this term, coming on as a substitute in three of their four games, and it looks as though Ten Hag may be utilising other options across his frontline.

The international break has come at the right time for the Red Devils, and it could give the Dutchman a chance to discuss Sancho’s future.

Jadon Sancho

The 5 foot 10 dud has rinsed the club spectacularly since the summer of 2021 and with his extortionate wages, the manager won't want him picking up a pay packet from the sidelines.

This could suggest a move away from Old Trafford will come sooner rather than later and what looked like a deal which could’ve turned out to be a wonderful piece of business by the club has descended into a nightmare for all involved.

Leeds Edge Closer To "Signing Of The Window"

If Leeds United can complete the transfer of Coventry City star Gustavo Hamer, it would be the "signing of the window", according to fan and host of the One Leeds Fan Channel, Conor McGilligan.

Is Gustavo Hamer joining Leeds United this summer?

It hasn't been a good few months for the Leeds faithful recently. A miserable Premier League campaign was rounded off with a final-day relegation after a humbling defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road.

Following that, the club had to endure an exodus of first-team players who wanted to play top-flight football again next season despite failing to keep the club up.

And then, to top it all off, the club captain and standout defender Liam Cooper went down injured after scoring a goal against Cardiff City in the team's first game back in the Championship last weekend.

However, there have been some genuinely positive developments regarding transfers for Daniel Farke and the team.

According to The Athletic's Phil Hay, the Peacocks are "keen" on Coventry star Harmer despite the deal not being "cheap or easy to do."

Coventry City's Gustavo Hamer

According to Football Insider, the West Midlands side have set a price tag of £12m plus an additional £2m of add-ons for any team that want to sign the 26-year-old, which while expensive, could be achievable for Leeds, especially should they get £20m for American international Tyler Adams.

If the 49ers group can get this deal over the line, it would be a great way to improve the side and win fans over, with prominent Leeds supporter McGilligan already describing it as potentially the "signing of the window."

He expressed his excitement at the potential signing on the One Leeds Fan Channel YouTube channel, saying:

"Gustavo Hamer would be, that would be the signing of the window. It would be the signing of the window.

"I think above Ampadu as well. I think Gus Hamer is such a good player."

How much does Gustavo Harmer earn?

The former Feyenoord man currently earns a relatively modest wage of £6,538-a-week in the West Midlands, which makes him the sixth-highest earner in the entire Sky Blues squad, per Capology.

Were he to make the move to the Whites this summer, he would likely earn a significant raise as the likes of Adams – who he could be replacing – earns £55,000-a-week in South Yorkshire.

And it would be a well-deserved raise as the Itajai-born machine had a brilliant season for Coventry last year, starting 42 games, scoring 11 goals, providing ten assists, winning nine Man-of-the-Match awards and averaging a seriously impressive match rating of 7.26 for the entire campaign, per WhoScored.

Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer.

His underlying numbers are just as impressive as you might imagine and suggest that were he to make a move, he would be able to slot right in and maintain his remarkable performances.

According to FBref, which compares players across the next best eight leagues, the 5 foot 7 dynamo sits in the top 1% for assists, the top 3% for total shots, the top 4% for expected assists and shot-creating actions, the top 5% for non-penalty goals and non-penalty expected goals, all per 90.

Described as the team's "main creative player" by journalist Josh Bunting, his potential arrival at Leeds would strengthen their promotion push while severely weakening Coverntry's, killing two birds with one stone for Farke's men.
