'This has been a learning experience for me' – Diego Simeone admits tactical mistake in Atletico Madrid's opening La Liga defeat

The new La Liga season has started in a disappointing fashion for Atletico Madrid, with Diego Simeone admitting he got things wrong.

Simeone admits tactical errors contributed to Atletico's opening defeatLost to EspanyolSimeone believes the loss will be a "learning experience" for himFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Simeone has admitted he made a tactical mistake in his side's 2-1 defeat to Espanyol on the opening day of the La Liga season. According to a report from Diario AS, Simeone reflected on his decision to substitute key players such as Thiago Almada, Alex Baena and Julian Alvarez, which he now believes was an error. The substitutions came with the score at 1-0 and 1-1, and Espanyol went on to score two second-half goals to secure the win.

The defeat at the RCDE Stadium is a disappointing start to the 2025-26 campaign for Atletico, who have struggled on the road and failed to capitalise on a strong transfer window. Despite a number of new signings, including Giacomo Raspadori, Thiago Almada, Matteo Ruggeri, Marc Pubill, and Santiago Mourino, their familiar vulnerabilities reappeared. The loss marks the first time an Atletico side under Simeone has lost its opening league match.

WHAT SIMEONE SAID

Speaking after the match, Simeone said: "We lost the game, first of all. The result hurts us. But I, starting the season, need to hold on to the very good things that were seen. We need to be more efficient, we had Julian’s chance that could have been a goal after a good play by the team. Football is wonderful, they had that set piece and it was 1-1 and then 2-1 and we end up with zero points." On his substitutions, he added: "I think this has been a learning experience for myself. There is a learning for me, you’ll see."

Iqbal, Dar, Zafar consign West Indies to their first loss of the tour

A comprehensive all-round performance helped Pakistan clinch the low-scoring encounter

Pakistan secured their first win of the tour, beating West Indies by eight wickets after a comprehensive all-round performance. It came thanks to a clinical all-round performance after the visitors won the toss and batted first, with Sadia Iqbal and Nida Dar taking three wickets each to skittle West Indies out for 84. There were no real jitters in the chase despite the manner of Pakistan’s defeat in the third T20I, and, spearheaded by Ayesha Zafar, they eased to victory with 21 balls to spare.A day after Pakistan named a near-unchanged squad for the upcoming tour of England, the players repaid that faith with what was by far the most impressive performance of the tour. Despite the series having slipped out of Pakistan’s reach, they began with a sharpness and urgency that belied how little was truly on the line.Qina Joseph was caught out of her crease off Iqbal and stumped first ball to set the tone. But it was the wicket of Hayley Matthews, West Indies’ talismanic captain and the outstanding performer of the series, that gave Pakistan true belief. After an uncharacteristic struggle, she was caught off Fatima Sana’s bowling after managing just a run in nine balls.Shemaine Campbelle was the only batter who scored runs and pushed the run rate up but was run out at an inopportune time after a 20-ball 26. The dismissal opened the floodgates as Pakistan took complete control thereafter, with four wickets falling for as many runs towards the death overs as West Indies stuttered along to 84 for 9.Pakistan had made hard work of an eminently gettable target late on in the third T20I, but there appeared no such danger today right from the outset. A breezy cameo from Sidra Ameen set the tone early, and when she and Muneeba Ali fell in quick succession, Zafar and Gull Feroza took complete control. Zafar in particular was in great touch finding the gaps and the occasional boundary to keep the score ticking over. Some sloppiness leaked into West Indies’ game as two relatively simple catches were put down off Matthews’ bowling, but in truth, the game was a foregone conclusion by then.Appropriately, the game ended with one of the shots of the day from Zafar, who lofted a half-volley over mid-on for an elegant boundary to make the win official.

Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood could play both West Indies and New Zealand T20Is

A lighter-than-expected workload for Australia’s three-format fast bowlers across the Test summer so far could allow the selectors to pick them for one or both of the upcoming T20I series against West Indies and New Zealand, which are the only six T20Is Australia play before the T20 World Cup in June.Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc have got through four Tests unscathed so far, with none of the four home matches reaching a fifth day. Neither has had to bowl more than 38 overs in a game, and Cummins is the only one who has bowled 20 overs in an innings more than once; but he has only done it twice in eight innings across the summer. All three are being rested from the ODIs against West Indies in early February, and it seemed likely they would be rested from the T20Is too. But given how their workloads have unfolded across the summer, there may be an opportunity to play one or both of those series, with the selectors meeting on Monday to finalise those squads.Related

“We’ll give some thought to that,” Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said. “There’ll be some that may play, and there’ll be some that might not play. It’ll be different squads [for each series]. We’ll look to potentially be at full strength for the New Zealand series.”We’ve got six games before the World Cup. A lot of the World Cup planning is in place at the moment. We’ll try to be as close to full strength for the New Zealand series as possible. The West Indies series is slightly nuanced.”There were concerns over how all three would come out of the ODI World Cup into the Test summer, but those fears have disappeared as they are in great shape and keen to play all seven Tests this season, including two against New Zealand in early March.Australia’s selectors are wary of the workload that both Cummins and Starc will have at the IPL as big-money signings, meaning they could be rested from the West Indies series before only playing part of the New Zealand series. However, Hazlewood would be the likeliest of the three to play both T20I series, given he is not going to play in the IPL unless an opportunity arises to be a replacement player.None of the three played any of Australia’s eight T20Is last year, as they were all rested in order to be fit for Test assignments and the ODI World Cup. Australia even defied the odds to win a T20 World Cup in the UAE in 2021 and an ODI World Cup in India in 2023 with an attack comprising Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc and only one specialist spinner in Adam Zampa. Glenn Maxwell was the second spinner and first-choice fifth bowler, with other overs being provided by allrounders. It appears as if Australia will back the same structure in for the T20 World Cup on the slower pitches in the West Indies, with Australia not scheduled to play any matches in the US.David Warner is set to return from the ILT20 for Australia duty•AFP/Getty Images

David Warner to play both seriesMcDonald confirmed that David Warner would be selected for both the West Indies and New Zealand T20Is, and will be required to leave the ILT20 to return to Australia by February 7. Tim David is in the same boat, having signed for MI Emirates, and will likely return to Australia if selected. Marcus Stoinis, who is at the SA20 with Durban’s Super Giants, might also return home early if he is selected for both of Australia’s series as expected.”Davey will be picked,” McDonald said. “He will come back from the ILT20. I think most of our players that are going over there are due back in on [February 7] in preparation for the [first] T20 in Hobart.”However, Australia are still yet to confirm who will captain the team at the T20 World Cup. Despite leading Australia to the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup last year, Cummins is very unlikely to be named T20I captain, having not led the team previously in that format.Mitchell Marsh captained the side on an interim basis in South Africa last year with great success, leading an inexperienced group to a 3-0 series sweep. He was also Australia’s vice-captain during the ODI World Cup, having led the ODI team too in South Africa. Immediately after the World Cup, Matthew Wade captained the T20I side in Marsh’s absence for the five-match T20I series in India.Meanwhile, McDonald will not coach the ODI and T20I series against West Indies in order to spend some extra time at home ahead of the New Zealand T20I and Test tour, although he is likely to be with the squad for some of the matches. Assistant coach Daniel Vettori will take the reins for those two series, having rested during the Adelaide Test. Fellow assistants Andre Borovec and Michael Di Venuto both coached Australia’s T20I sides last year in India and South Africa, respectively, when McDonald remained at home.

Mooney and Devine make light work of tricky chase against under-fire Renegades

Scorchers held control before Harmanpreet and Wareham knocks but it wasn’t enough for Renegades

Tristan Lavalette03-Nov-2023Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine pummelled an under pressure Melbourne Renegades in a well-executed chase as Perth Scorchers recorded a comfortable victory at the WACA.A chase of 172 appeared tricky until Mooney and Devine combined for a 105-run third-wicket partnership. They relished the batting friendly conditions under lights as Scorchers waltzed to the target in the 17.2 overs. The defeat puts pressure on Renegades, who are struggling to keep touch with the top four with five losses in six games. After electing to bat, Renegades were pinned down until a 76-run partnership between Harmanpreet Kaur and Georgia Wareham engineered a fightback.Their momentum carried over when offspinner Hayley Matthews dismissed Chloe Piparo in the first over. But Renegades were left to rue Sarah Coyte dropping a sitter in the deep when Mooney was on 9 robbing 16-year-old left-arm quick Sara Kennedy of her first WBBL wicket.Ahead of her imminent Year 10 exams, Kennedy hit speeds nudging 120kmph in her third WBBL match, but Renegades ultimately succumbed to veterans Mooney and Devine.Having overtaken Elyse Villani as Scorchers’ highest ever run-scorer, Mooney used her feet superbly to thwart Wareham’s legspin. The game was on a knife’s edge at the midway point, but Scorchers decided to go for broke with the power surge after the drinks break. The gamble worked superbly with Devine smashing three consecutive sixes off Matthews to turn the contest on its head.Mooney reached her half-century after a drop from a leaping Tammy Beaumont at point in a tough chance that seemingly ended Renegades’ hopes. Devine reached her half-century in style with a six but fell off the next delivery to Georgia Prestwidge.Harmanpreet Kaur anchored Melbourne Renegades with an unbeaten half century but it wasn’t enough•Getty ImagesScorchers should be well satisfied with their 4-2 record ahead of the season debut on Sunday of star England allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt, who was a controversial late signing after not nominating for the overseas player draft. With turn playing a factor in the earlier Strikers-Sixers match, star legspinner Alana King loomed large. She produced sharp turn immediately and on the second ball of the innings had Beaumont edging to slip.Emerging spinner Amy Edgar, who has made a strong start to the season, relished the extra bounce on the surface and had Courtney Webb poking tamely to midwicket. The pressure was on Matthews, who had scored just 63 runs from five games. Matthews struggled to shake her sluggish form, but rode her luck on 12 when Amy Jones dropped a regulation chance at long-on.Matthews looked out of sorts until smashing a couple of boundaries from offspinner Lilly Mills in the eighth over. Just when she was building momentum, powering past her previous season high score of 20, Matthews fell to teenaged quick Chloe Ainsworth.Harmanpreet and Wareham played smartly to steady the ship as Scorchers’ long-held struggles of taking wickets in the middle overs reared. The batters were intent on nudging the ball around and building a platform for the power surge, which they took in the 16th over.Tensions boiled over when Harmanpreet was not ready to face Devine, whose dot delivery ultimately was deemed a dead ball. A brief delay ensued leading to a war of words as Devine’s mood deteriorated further when Wareham put the foot down to smash four boundaries off Edgar in the 17th over.Devine felt slightly better after producing a direct run out to end Wareham’s 25-ball 44 and she was all smiles later in the night as Scorchers remained unbeaten at home.

Benfica beat Bayern Munich 1-0 to top Group C at the Club World Cup, with both sides qualifying for the knock-out stages. Andreas Schjelderup scored the only goal of the game for the Portuguese side, dispatching Fredrik Aursnes' cross on 13 minutes during a first half which they had the better of.

Bayern improved after introducing leading goalscorer Harry Kane from the bench at half-time but were frustrated in their efforts. Leroy Sane missed a one-on-one before Joshua Kimmich's effort from distance found the net but was ruled out, with Kane obstructing the goalkeeper from an offside position.

Sane was denied once more in the final moments before Kane headed wide from a corner as Bayern surrendered top spot and landed themselves in the same quarter of the draw as PSG.

Benfica were forced to ride their luck in the second half and had goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin to thank for remaining in front. £780k-per-year Celtic player who Rodgers loves now set to leave Parkhead

Celtic are closing in on another Scottish Premiership title, but may have to concede defeat in their quest to retain an important asset heading into next season.

Celtic remain on course for a sparking end to the season

Following a Glasgow Derby defeat to Rangers before the international break, Celtic reacted in ideal fashion against Heart of Midlothian by claiming a 3-0 victory to retain their 13-point lead at the Scottish Premiership summit.

Daizen Maeda’s double and a close-range finish from Jota sealed an impressive afternoon, keeping the Bhoys on course for another domestic treble. While the date of their inevitable title party remains to be determined, Brendan Rodgers has already started work on potential summer reinforcements.

Looking to strengthen in midfield, Celtic have Augsburg star Elvis Rexhbecaj on their radar and could be given a boost in their pursuit due to the fact his contract at the Bundesliga club is set to expire in 2026.

Furthermore, the Bhoys are keen to sign free-scoring attacker Maeda to a new contract. Rodgers has confirmed that talks are ongoing, and Dermot Desmond has played a part in initiating negotiations.

Celtic thought that “physically gifted” midfielder was going to be the next Victor Wanyama, but then Brendan Rodgers sold him for £2m.

Retaining key assets will hold parity with the importance of bringing fresh blood to Parkhead this summer. Nicolas Kuhn, Reo Hatate and Cameron Carter-Vickers, among others, are players Celtic will be keen to keep hold of ahead of their Champions League qualifying path next season.

Either way, not everyone will be there to enjoy the journey. Football has a funny way of throwing up surprises, though supporters won’t be too shocked by the identity of one star that is now set for the exit door.

Brendan Rodgers confirms Greg Taylor is set to leave Celtic

Speaking after the Bhoys’ triumph over Hearts, Rodgers confirmed Greg Taylor is set to leave Celtic on a free transfer once his contract expires at the end of the season.

He stated: “I’ve been in the position so many times and I can read situations as well. It’s probably more that he’ll move on than stay, which is a big shame for me because he’s someone that I really, really like. I love him as a person but I love his game because I think his game is suited to how we work.”

Jeffrey Schlupp has taken on the role of primary operator at left-back since arriving from Crystal Palace. Kieran Tierney will join Celtic in the off-season, plunging Taylor’s prospects of regular minutes into doubt.

Now, £780,000 per year earner Taylor appears to have decided to move on. History will remember the Scotland international as a valiant servant who played a major part in success stories during a golden era for the Bhoys, even if his end at the club feels slightly anticlimactic.

'Dhoni never complained about his knee to anybody'

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan reflects on a successful season and clarifies he wasn’t ‘pacifying’ Jadeja in viral video

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jun-20237:55

‘Satisfaction of seeing home-grown boy win CSK the title made Dhoni emotional’

MS Dhoni didn’t consider missing a single IPL game this season, even though it meant playing with a heavily strapped left knee in a cast. The former India captain, who led Chennai Super Kings to a fifth IPL crown, has since undergone surgery in Mumbai earlier this month and is “comfortable, happy and recovering.””We never asked him things like ‘do you want to play or do you want to sit out.’ If he can’t, he would’ve told us straightaway,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told ESPNcricinfo Tamil. “We knew it was a struggle for him to play, but his commitment to the team, his leadership and how the team benefits everyone knows. From that perspective, you have to appreciate him.”Till the final, he never complained about his knee to anybody. Though everyone knew, and you would’ve seen him struggling while running, he never complained even once. After the final, he said, ‘okay, I’ll have a surgery.’ He’s finished his surgery, he’s quite happy, he’s recovering.”Related

Dhoni vows to return for another IPL season if his body allows it

Jadeja finally gets his Chepauk love

At the post-final presentation, Dhoni agreed retiring after winning the title would be the “best time”, but has vowed to return for “at least” one more season if his body allows. This will be a “gift” to his fans even if it means putting in “tough” yards for another nine months. That stance remains intact, with Dhoni set to begin his rehab soon after three weeks of post-surgery rest.”Actually, he told us immediately after the final is over he’ll fly to Mumbai, have surgery and go back to Ranchi for rehab,” Viswanathan said. “In Mumbai, after Ruturaj’s wedding [on June 4], I visited him. It was a courtesy call. He’s quite comfortable. He said he’ll rest for three weeks and then start his rehab. And like he said, he’s not going to play until January-February. We don’t need to remind him about all that.2:14

Kasi Viswanathan: ‘No issues with Jadeja at CSK’

“He knows what to do, how to go about it, so we aren’t going to ask him ‘what are you going to do, how’ etc. He will inform us on his own. Whatever he’s doing, he’ll call first and inform only Mr N Srinivasan, not anyone else. Factually, he’ll be straightforward with him. From him, we’ll get the information that this is what he’s doing. It’s been this way since 2008. That’s how it will continue.”Viswanathan also brushed aside the chatter of any friction between Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni. Last year, there were murmurs that all was not well between the two after Jadeja was removed as captain mid-season. Rumuors intensified when Jadeja left the camp with an injury. This season, Jadeja is also believed to have been irked by chants of “we want Dhoni!” every time he walked in to bat. Then there were visuals of Jadeja and Dhoni in an animated chat after CSK’s clash in Delhi, where Jadeja finished with figures of 0 for 50 off four overs. Soon after, Viswanathan himself was seen having a long discussion with Jadeja. Then there were some cryptic tweets on “karma” and some straightforward ones, like appreciation from sponsors but not fans.”As far as Jadeja is concerned, he bowled superbly,” Viswanathan said. “While batting, our line-up of Ruturaj, Conway, Moeen, Rahane, with the results, whenever he [Jadeja] went in to bat, he had 5-10 balls left. In such situations, it can or can’t click sometimes. But the thing is he also knew Dhoni was to come in next, and he himself would get just 2-3 balls sometimes. In such situations whenever he went in, the crowd used to welcome Dhoni. In a way, he may have felt hurt. Any player for that matter may have had that pressure. But he didn’t complain about it even though he put out a tweet.Kasi Viswanathan dismissed reports of a rift between Dhoni and Jadeja•BCCI

“It’s all part and parcel of the game. After the last game, people saw videos online and assumed I’m pacifying Jadeja, but it wasn’t like that. I was talking to him about the match, what he did. We didn’t have any other discussion. Everyone knows in a team environment, what happens in the dressing room, no one is privy to it outside. We don’t have any problem. He always had high respect for Dhoni. After the final also, he said, ‘I dedicate this knock to Dhoni.’ That is the kind of respect he has for MS.”What were Dhoni’s first words to him after the final was won?”He said, ‘look, the fifth title has been delivered.’ It’s a big relief,” Viswanathan said. “He praised Jadeja for the effort and confidence he showed. It [Ahmedabad] was like a home ground for him [Jadeja]. It was very satisfying. Everyone knows how Dhoni has brought up Jadeja from 2012 at CSK. He has the satisfaction of seeing a home-grown boy deliver the title for CSK.”

Ange already has the perfect Son replacement in Spurs' "fearless" teen star

It started with the appointment of Ange Postecoglou and the sale of Harry Kane in 2023, but the rebuilding of Tottenham Hotspur still has a long way to go.

For all his faults and the incredible number of injuries the Australian has had to deal with during his time in North London, he has been able to turn what was a terribly dull team under the previous managers into one capable of playing exciting football.

However, to ensure he can kick on with his process next season, Daniel Levy and Co have to continue to back his vision by signing the players he wants, like Micky van de Ven, Dominic Solanke and Lucas Bergvall, but also shipping off those who don’t have a long-term future in the side.

One of the players in the second camp is Son Heung-min, and while the club may be tempted to go out and splash the cash on his replacement, they might not need to, as Hotspur Way could have already produced one.

Why Son's time is coming to an end

So, before the torches and pitchforks come out, it has to be said that Son is not only an icon for Spurs but also for the Premier League as a whole.

However, just because he has been a sensational player for the Lilywhites for nearly a decade now does not mean he is irreplaceable.

In fact, the reason the club need to think about his heir is because of how long he’s been playing.

The South Korean superstar is set to turn 33 in the summer, and while he has still been surprisingly productive this term, racking up 22 goals and assists in 40 appearances, most fans will attest to the fact that he’s no longer as dynamic on or off the ball as he used to be.

Now, this is not a slight on the Chuncheon-born star’s ability, but a simple fact that he’s another footballer who’s set to be the victim of time, with research from The Athletic in 2021 revealing that wide players hit their peak at 26 years old and then suffer a steep drop-off in their ability to take defenders on when they hit 30.

Heung-min Son for Tottenham

Unfortunately, this struggle to beat opposition defenders is reflected in the 32-year-old’s underlying numbers, as according to FBref, Son sits in the bottom 46% of attacking midfielders or wingers in the Premier League for total successful take-ons, and the bottom 27% for the percentage of his take-ons that end in success, all per 90.

In all, the Spurs captain should be considered one of the best wingers the Premier League has seen, but it’s becoming increasingly apparent that he’s beginning to lose some of what made him so dangerous.

The good news, however, is that the club might already have the perfect heir to take his place in a year or two.

The talent who could replace Son

While the likes of Mathys Tel, who can play out wide or down the middle, and Wilson Odobert could undoubtedly prove to be brilliant wingers for Spurs, the true heir to Son might well come from Hotspur Way.

Mikey Moore hasn’t been able to play as much first-team football as some of the club’s other exciting teenage talents this season, like Archie Gray and Bergvall, but when he has stepped on the pitch, he has looked tremendously impressive.

For example, it was against AZ Alkmaar in the league phase of the Europa League that the promising prospect really announced himself as a future star, as while he didn’t score or provide an assist, he was a constant thorn in the side of the Dutch team.

Whenever he had the ball on the left, he would run at his opposing defender, and it was this impressive showing that led to James Maddison describing him as “fearless” and comparing him to Neymar Jr.

On top of standing out at the senior level, the 17-year-old dynamo has been nothing short of phenomenal for the North Londoners’ junior sides.

Ultimately, with the incredible Moore, Spurs can rest easily, safe in the knowledge that when Son eventually hangs up his boots or takes a more significant step back, they already have the perfect homegrown replacement to step in and step up.

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2022Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Charlotte Edwards and Abdul Qadir have been inducted into ICC’s Hall of Fame. The trio will be honoured ahead of the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup at the SCG.Chanderpaul, the 107th inductee on the list, had a 21-year career representing West Indies after making his debut in 1994. His unorthodox batting stance would go on to be his trademark while his patience at the crease became his signature. After spending his initial years in and out of the team, Chanderpaul became a rock in West Indies’ middle order, a role he held till his last cap in 2015.When Chanderpaul announced his retirement in 2016, he finished with 20,988 international runs, 41 centuries and 125 half-centuries across formats.”It’s an amazing honour to follow the footsteps of many legends and so many other great cricketers of the past,” Chanderpaul said in an ICC release. “I’m grateful for the recognition and would like to enjoy the moment with family, friends and most importantly the West Indies cricket fans and fans around the world who passionately supported me throughout my career.”Edwards, No. 108 in ICC’s Hall of Fame, represented England since the age of 16 for two decades, and by the time she finished her international career had also captained the side to an ODI and T20 World Cup title. Her 5992 runs in women’s ODIs are the second most in the game’s history. In 2021, the domestic women’s T20 competition in England was named the Charlotte Edwards Cup in her honour, and the following year Edwards won the trophy named after herself after coaching Southern Vipers to the title.”It’s a massive honour to be included in the ICC Hall of Fame alongside the very illustrious company that has already been inducted,” Edwards said. “I’d like to thank and share this moment with my family and friends, my teammates and all of the coaches that have supported me throughout.”Qadir, the legendary legspinner from Pakistan who died in 2019 aged 63, was the 109th inductee on the list. Qadir took 236 Test wickets in 67 matches and his 9 for 56 against England in 1987 remains one of the best figures in Test cricket. Qadir made his last international appearance in 1993.”On behalf of the family, I want to say thank you very much to the ICC for nominating my father for induction into the Hall of Fame,” Usman, Abdul Qadir’s son, said. “It is a very big honour for the family to hear of this news, we see it as a huge achievement, and one that my father would be very proud of if he was still with us today.”In November 2021, Janette Brittin, Mahela Jayawardene and Shaun Pollock were inducted while ten others – Bob Willis, Vinoo Mankad, Learie Constantine, Andy Flower among them – were also inducted before the inaugural World Test Championship final last year.
