The 2025 European Championship is well under way, and the reigning champions will kick-off their campaign on Saturday, as 2022 winners England face a France team that has regularly reached the latter stages of major tournaments, albeit without ever having won one. Les Bleues look good coming into this summer, though, with them winning every single game so far in 2025 to mark themselves out as a real contender for the trophy in Switzerland.

It's not long since these two last met, as they were in the same qualifying group for this very tournament last summer. In that, they traded blows, with France winning 2-1 in Newcastle before England were victorious by the same scoreline in Saint-Etienne just four days later. Those recent meetings only emphasise the widespread belief that this instalment will be another extremely tight and competitive affair.

There is little room for margin for either team, too, as the Netherlands – as well as Wales – are also in this group. It means at least one genuine challenger for this Euros title is going to go out in the first round, making a good start in Saturday's game all the more important for the Lionesses. So, who will head coach Sarina Wiegman put her faith in from the start as England's title defence begins? GOAL takes a look at how the European champions line up in Zurich…

  • Getty Images Sport

    GK: Hannah Hampton

There are a lot of places in this England team that are just not up for debate, and it starts in goal, where Hannah Hampton will make her major tournament debut on Saturday. After being in a fierce competition with Mary Earps for the No.1 shirt for the last year or so, Wiegman reportedly decided that she had won that race before Euro 2025 began – and it was her place as second-choice that prompted Earps to retire from international duty so suddenly.

It's vital that Hampton plays well and is consistently available through this tournament, too, as neither Anna Moorhouse nor Khiara Keating – England's other two goalkeepers in the squad – have even got a senior cap to their name.

  • Getty Images Sport

    RB: Lucy Bronze

Another position that is seemingly nailed on for the entire tournament is right-back, where Lucy Bronze will be integral for the Lionesses for a sixth time at a major tournament. No one has more caps and, with them, experience in this squad than the Chelsea defender, who heads to Switzerland in some quite impressive attacking form, actually, after returning two goals and an assist in her last three England outings.

There will be particular emphasis on her defensive work in this fixture though, with France boasting an electric left-side which features Sandy Baltimore, her Chelsea team-mate, and Selma Bacha, the attack-minded left-back.

  • Getty

    CB: Leah Williamson

After having to miss the 2023 Women's World Cup due to a devastating ACL injury suffered only three months before it began, Leah Williamson will be relishing the honour of leading her country out at a major tournament once again this summer.

The Arsenal icon was a star of England's Euro 2022 triumph and she will hope to showcase similar form this time around, something she will surely be confident of doing after ending her 2024-25 season in such wonderful fashion by helping the Gunners win the Champions League.

    CB: Alex Greenwood

Williamson will have a different centre-back partner at Euro 2025 when compared to 2022, as it is likely to be Alex Greenwood alongside her this time around. That comes off the back of Millie Bright's decision to withdraw from selection this summer, but it is also a well-deserved berth, given the Manchester City star has been one of the best players in her position in England and, really, the world over the last few years.

Greenwood was excellent as the Lionesses reached the Women's World Cup final in 2023 and she'll be keen to prove her worth again on a big stage. It starts with quite a challenge, too, with her likely to be lining up against Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Paris Saint-Germain's all-time top goal-scorer.

Crunch the numbers: Yes, Inter Miami tapped out against PSG, but financial disparities and realities of global soccer hierarchy were always working against Leo Messi, MLS side

Miami were never likely to win, and their Club World Cup exit emphasized where MLS sits relative to world football

Even the linesman was tired by the end. The man on the far side of the pitch had been running up and down the touchline all match, just trying to keep up with a Miami defense constantly in retreat. He hadn't put a foot wrong. In the 76th minute, an intrusive camera panned his way. The man looked exhausted.

So was everyone else not wearing the effortless navy blue of PSG. Inter Miami were battered here, out run, outplayed and embarrassed on home(ish) turf. The 4-0 loss Sunday in the Club World Cup round of 16 will hurt the competitors on the pitch, give fuel to the online Lionel Messi trolls, and reflect poorly on Javier Mascherano in his first season in club management.

Inter Miami owners Jorge Mas and David Beckham won't take it well. It will also, undoubtedly, be a stick to beat MLS with in the coming days, weeks, and months.

But to criticize Miami, loss or not, is to miss the broader point. The 4-0 scoreline was comprehensive. But when put into context, makes perfect sense. Miami had stretched what MLS could do in this tournament, reached just beyond where the league really sits in the global sphere. And when they took the field against the true elite – who had big money and better players – there was only one way this game was going to go.

AFPA predictable battering

Miami were in the game for about five minutes. The opening exchanges looked admittedly promising. The Herons dug in. Mascherano pointed around with vigor and encouragement. Luis Suarez got those old legs churning. This was a contest between the European champions and the team currently with the 11th best points total in the ninth best league in the world.

And the plucky underdog – yes, a team can still have Messi and be an underdog – looked alright.

Then PSG started to play a bit. Their first goal was simple enough, a wide open Joao Neves nipping in at the far post to head back across Oscar Ustari. What crushed Miami, though, was the next 15 minutes.

Noah Allen went off with an injury. PSG dominated possession. Khvicha Kvarastskhelia pulled the Herons' defense left and right, leaving a confused Marcelo Weigandt reduced to a pool of flailing limbs. Tomas Aviles came on, tried to set the tone with a shin high crunching tackle on Nuno Mendes – and went straight into the book. Messi barely touched the ball.

They did well, in fact, to hold out for as long as they did. It was a surprise that the Parisians needed until the 39th minute to make it two. But even that one was simple. Sergio Busquets was stripped at the top of his own box. Five touches, four passes and eight seconds later, the ball was in the back of the Miami net.

Busquets, one of the great defensive midfielders of his time, barely had time to compute what had happened. The third and fourth came in short order. Aviles headed into his own net after a slick move down the right. Hakimi basically walked the ball home for the fourth after a kind ricochet.

PSG boss Luis Enrique took off his captain and a vital midfield piece at half time, and spent the majority of the second half rotating. Miami enjoyed a bit more of the ball. Messi danced around for moments. A clunky touch from Suarez prevented what would have been a tap in. Messi whacked a free kick into the wall.

A goal, in truth, wouldn't have been fair – 4-0 felt about right, a first half battering followed by a second half siesta for the French giants and their Spanish manager.

AdvertisementAFPFighting against the numbers

PSG issued a thumping in pretty much every statistical category. Pick your preferred number to measure it all. They had 67 percent possession. They completed 685 passes. Miami completed 306. They took 19 shots. Miami took eight. They won the xG battle, 2.49-0.43.

They dominated elsewhere, too. Miami averaged 45 seconds between ball recoveries. PSG needed just 18. The Parisians scored more goals in the first half (four), than Miami had completed passes in the final third (three).

But all of that should come as a surprise to no one. Zoom out, look at the numbers beyond the white lines of the football pitch, and it all makes so much sense. One thing that we can take away from this expanded version of the Club World Cup – it is a measure of the relative strength of the global sport.

This game reflected exactly where the numbers lie off the pitch, as well. Since 2023, PSG have spent $445 million on new players. Miami have spent $26M. PSG, in 2024, dished $744M on wages – $121M more than anyone else in Europe. According to the most recent MLS salary guide, Miami is spending $46.8M – around 1/17th of PSG's total annual allotment (and just under half of that goes into the pocket of one player.)

The Parisians collected $94M for winning the Champions League this year and pocketed another $58M for lifting the Ligue 1 title. And there's $125M on the line for whichever team wins this Club World Cup.

Miami did not win a major trophy last season, and Bloomberg estimated that they took about $8M from MLS' broadcast deal with Apple – which is split between teams in the league. PSG are funded by Qatari Sports Investment – a massive sovereign wealth fund that has invested not only in football but also in basketball, baseball and hockey. Miami are owned by David Beckham and the chairman of an engineering company.

For comparison, MLB's famous "Moneyball" Oakland A's had a salary of $41M to the New York Yankees' $125M. This is perhaps among the biggest examples of financial disparity in professional sports, being played out on a pitch.

AFPPSG are so, so good

Of course, it is one thing to have money, and another to use it well. For years, PSG offered an absolute clinic on how to throw away cash without any real direction. They signed the wrong players, hired the wrong managers, and spent basically a decade constructing poorly pieced together squads that always lost on the biggest stages.

Star power failed them. So, last summer, they were clever. Luis Enrique admitted that he was glad that Kylian Mbappe left because he could finally have a .

His ownership bought him a pretty good one. What PSG created was a well-oiled pressing machine, full of some of the brightest young talents in Europe. And when the season was off to a poor start – when it looked like they might be in danger of dropping out of the Champions League at the group phase – they simply spent $72M plus add ons to buy the best player in Serie A, if only to complete the side.

No one else in the world has that luxury – least of all an MLS team.

Fittingly, there is no real star player here. Ousmane Dembele might be a Ballon d'Or frontrunner, but his 30 minutes of involvement against Miami were the first he has played all tournament. Kvarastskhelia may be electric, but he's unassuming. Desire Doue scored two in the Champions League final, plays with the kind of flair that sells shirts en masse, but is still 20 (and will presumably don the white of Real Madrid before reaching his absolute peak as a footballer).

They embarrassed Inter Milan, 5-0, in the Champions League final. That beatdown was so comprehensive that the merciful referee didn't even add any stoppage time in the second half – such was the wobbliness of the Milanese legs. They followed that by battering Atletico Madrid to open their CWC campaign.

GettyBotafogo, who play without ego

What happened after that, then, might be confusing. PSG smashed back-to-back European giants before facing Brazilian side Botafogo – and were beaten 1-0. It would seem to run counter to all of the rhetoric about money, power and, well, quality. It served as a reference point, a blueprint – perhaps even a glimmer of hope. If Botafogo could do it, why couldn't Miami?

It's a fair assumption, but dig a little deeper, ponder the circumstances, the angles, and the actual physical teams playing football, and it's a flawed comparison.

Any such assumption is a massive disservice to Botafogo as a team, and the Brazilian Serie A as a league. Botafogo, remember, are the reigning Copa Libertadores champions. They are led by Igor Jesus, who has started up front for the Brazilian national team. More broadly, Brazil's top flight is, well, better than MLS. Botafogo are a better team, playing in a better league, with a more impressive resume to back it up.

But perhaps the real reason Botafogo were able to beat PSG when Miami couldn't is because of the vibe, the setup, what kids call "aura." Manager Renato Paiva claimed that the "cemetery of football is full of favorites" before the game, and seemed to instruct his side to kick the Parisians to their football grave.

They committed 15 fouls across those 90 minutes, and got away with so many more. Their goal came from a kind deflection from Jesus's rather scuffed shot, and they were shameless in their defensive setup thereafter. Botafogo dug in for an hour, "played" something resembling a 6-3-1, and were good value for a vintage smash and grab.

Miami, meanwhile, set up with a hint of ego. This is the curse of having Messi in your team: you have to play like it. Miami tried to match PSG man-for-man. Their 4-4-2 formation, with a bit more attacking intent, predictably, was ripped to shreds.

Critics have long pointed out that the Herons don't have the athleticism to survive against younger, quicker and more expansive sides. Those are all traits that PSG have. Throw in the fact that they can also field a team of 11 elite footballers, and this was a thrashing waiting to happen.

A provável escalação do Flamengo tem: Santos; Matheuzinho, Fabrício Bruno, Pablo e Ayrton Lucas; Diego, Vidal e Victor Hugo; Marinho, Everton Cebolinha e Lázaro.

98th percentile for dribbling: Tottenham now racing to sign £30m PL forward

Tottenham Hotspur are now in the race to sign an “unbelievable” forward from a rival Premier League club, according to a report.

Postecoglou keen to bring in new winger

Ange Postecoglou’s side have seriously underperformed in the Premier League this season, sitting 14th in the table with just nine games left to play, so it is little wonder they are keen to bring in some reinforcements in the summer transfer window.

One position in which Spurs are clearly keen to strengthen is winger, and they have now taken the first step towards signing Feyenoord’s Igor Paixao by making contact to discuss a deal for the Brazilian, who could be an upgrade on Son Heung-min.

Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman is another name on the shortlist, and the Frenchman seems like he could be an attainable target, given that the German side are eager to sell him in the upcoming window.

However, another option from much closer to home is now entering the frame, with a report from The Boot Room revealing Tottenham are now interested in signing Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, who is facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are now willing to sanction Madueke’s departure this summer, and a move across the capital could be possible, with Spurs joining the race for his signature, alongside Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Chelsea's NoniMaduekeduring the warm up before the match

The Lilywhites appreciate the Chelsea ace, who has a 100% win record when he’s featured against Spurs, and the door could be open for a deal this summer, although there may be competition from AC Milan, who are now confident about getting a deal done.

The Italian side have submitted a £33m bid for the England international, who cost the Blues £30m back in 2023.

"Unbelievable" Madueke impressing at Chelsea

It seems a little harsh that Chelsea are willing to sell the 23-year-old this summer, given that he has put in some impressive performances this season, picking up seven goals and three assists in the Premier League.

That follows on from a solid 2023/24 campaign, during which he impressed former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

As a result of his attacking output, the former PSV Eindhoven man has performed very well on a range of attacking statistics over the past year, most notably impressing with his dribbling ability.

CORINTHIANS BELISCA A SAÍDA DO FLA E QUASE ABRE O PLACAR NO INÍCIO DO JOGO

O argentino Fausto Vera entrou no lugar.

AS NOTAS DO JOGO

QUASE O TERCEIRO DO FLAMENGO

Man Utd now eye move to replace Amorim with 4-3-3 World Cup-winning boss

As Manchester United’s poor form continues, INEOS are already reportedly eyeing a move to replace Ruben Amorim after just four months in charge by hiring a World Cup winner.

Amorim's nightmare four months at Old Trafford

On paper, hiring a young, hungry manager seemed exactly what Manchester United needed. Amorim ticked most boxes and even backed up his credentials by defeating Manchester City with Sporting Club in the Champions League just before his Old Trafford arrival. What INEOS did not take a close enough look at is the system that the 40-year-old deploys.

For a squad full of wingers, an attack which lacks a leading goalscorer and one full of defenders used to playing in a back four, Manchester United hired a manager who plays without wingers, one key man leading the line and a back five rather than a back four. And as the months have ticked by, it’s become clearer that United simply did not do their homework.

Not just Onana: £85k-p/w Man Utd star now looks finished under Amorim

The futures of numerous Man Utd stars now look increasingly uncertain at Old Trafford

ByRobbie Walls Mar 4, 2025

Whilst Amorim should have done better at this stage than five wins in 16 Premier League games and a place in the bottom half, square pegs in round holes across his system were never going to turn Manchester United into a top-four side or perhaps even top half.

What makes matters worse is that the Red Devils simply cannot afford to rebuild their side in Amorim’s vision with the quality that he needs to take them back into European football. Amid a time full of cost-cutting measures, United have seemingly backed themselves into a corner once again.

It’s a problem which has seemingly sparked doubt over Amorim’s future, with a World Cup winner now reportedly being eyed by those at Old Trafford.

Man Utd eyeing move for Joachim Low

According to claims in Spain, Manchester United are now eyeing a move to hire Joachim Low to replace the struggling Amorim.

The 65-year-old has been out of a job since leaving the German national team in 2021 and hasn’t taken charge of club football since Austria Vienna in 2003. So, whilst this may be a World Cup winner, this is not an option who has great pedigree outside of international football which could instantly spark concerns for Manchester United.

Joachim Low lifts the World Cup with Germany.

However, one positive that United would benefit from hiring Low is that his preferred system with Germany was a 4-3-3, which would instantly suit the current Red Devils squad far more than a back five – therefore also possibly saving INEOS much-needed money this summer.

Whether those at Old Trafford pull the trigger on their Amorim decision this early remains to be seen, but he certainly needs to start picking up the right results sooner rather than later.

After signing Cameron: Rangers must axe Ibrox dud earning more than Raskin

It is fair to say that the season has not gone to plan for Glasgow Rangers so far as they are facing an uphill battle in their pursuit of silverware.

The Light Blues are already 13 points behind Glasgow rivals Celtic in the race for the Scottish Premiership title, which makes it seem unlikely that they will avoid missing out on the top-flight trophy for the fourth year in succession.

Philippe Clement’s men did have a big chance to lift a piece of silverware in December after they took the Hoops to penalties in the final of the SFA Cup, but they just fell short.

The Gers did not use the January transfer window, however, to massively bolster their chances of success in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.

Nils Koppen brought in central defender Rafael Fernandes on loan from Lille to provide back-up to the likes of Robin Propper, John Souttar, and Clinton Nsiala, and that was the only immediate addition of the window.

The Ibrox giants did, however, announce that they have secured a pre-contract agreement with Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron, who is now set to move to the club in the summer.

Why Lyall Cameron could be a good signing

It was recently reported that the Light Blues may have to pay a compensation fee of around £400k, as the 22-year-old came up through the ranks at Dundee, despite him being out of contract at the end of the season.

This means that Rangers are set to sign the Premiership talent for a bargain fee, particularly when you consider his impressive performances in the division this season.

The Scotland U21 international provided a timely reminder of his quality in the SFA Cup on Saturday, as the midfield whiz scored two goals and provided one assist in a 4-0 win over Airdrieonians for Dundee.

Cameron has, now, racked up a return of ten goals and eight assists in 31 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish side, typically deployed as a central midfielder, but he has also been utilised in a number ten position.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old dynamo has proven his quality at the top end of the pitch in the Premiership, with nine direct goal contributions in 23 outings.

This form comes after the Dundee academy graduate scored five goals in 32 appearances in the top-flight during the 2023/24 campaign, which came after a return of seven goals in 25 Championship matches for Montrose on loan in the previous season.

Wage Burners

Cameron could come in to provide an attacking threat from midfield, whilst being a relatively cheap option, which is why this could be an excellent piece of business for the club.

The Dundee youngster is reportedly on £340-per-week, per Salary Sport, and that could soar significantly upon his deal at Rangers coming into effect, particularly when you consider the wage bill at Ibrox.

What Rangers' wage bill looks like after signing Cameron

No regular first-team member at Rangers earns less than £1.4k-per-week, per Salary Sport, and this suggests that Cameron is in line for a big wage increase next season, assuming that they put him in line with a first-team wage at Ibrox.

In fact, the highest earner at the club earns almost 100 times more per week than the Dundee youngster, as club captain James Tavernier is reportedly on £30k-per-week.

As you can see in the table above, there are some significant earners within the Gers squad and some of them have not offered enough back on the pitch in return.

The high earner who must leave Rangers after Cameron move

Tom Lawrence is one player whose future at Ibrox should be in doubt after the arrival of Cameron, as his contract is up at the end of the season and he is on a huge £22k-per-week.

To put it simply, the Wales international has been too inconsistent with both his availability and his performance levels on the pitch to justify a contract extension.

Cameron, on £340-per-week, has only missed four squads through injury since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, and has contributed with 15 goals and eight assists in all competitions in that time.

Tom Lawrence

Meanwhile, Lawrence has missed out on 47 matchday squads since the start of last season, and contributed with eight goals and five assists for the Scottish giants in all competitions.

The 31-year-old flop joined the club from Derby County in the summer of 2022 and has only made 57 first-team appearances in more than two-and-a-half years at Ibrox to date.

Rangers are not getting enough back from him, in performances or availability, to justify his wages beyond his current contract, particularly when you consider how well Raskin, who earns less than Lawrence, has performed in midfield this season.

As you can see in the table above, the Belgian dynamo has been available week-in-week-out for the Gers and has contributed with quality at both ends of the pitch, unlike the Welshman.

This suggests that Rangers are not getting value for money out of Lawrence’s contract, as a player earning less than him is contributing far more, and the signing of Cameron will provide Clement and Koppen with a chance to finally ditch the former Rams star.

When the Dundee man’s move to Ibrox is officially complete, Rangers will have the options in central and attacking midfield to finally part ways with the flop, shaving a big chunk off the wage bill in the process.

England hope to make better SCG World Cup memories, but Sri Lanka won't make it easy for them

“It would be a good achievement if we can get through in a pretty tough group,” Alex Hales says

Andrew McGlashan04-Nov-2022In 2015, England’s horrid ODI World Cup campaign came to a forgettable end on a damp, miserable day at the SCG with a facile nine-wicket win against Afghanistan. This time, they will hope to make better memories and a place in the semi-finals for the third consecutive T20 World Cup. There is a decent chance that a victory of any sort will be enough, but should Australia win by a significant margin against Afghanistan, England will at least have the advantage of knowing their exact target given that cricket has yet to embrace concurrent final-round matches.Related

England win tactical tussle to prevent repeat of semi-final defeat

Having returned to the England side ahead of this tournament, Alex Hales is one of two players from the XI against Afghanistan seven years ago – the other is Jos Buttler – who will line up against Sri Lanka. Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes were also in that squad, along with Chris Jordan.”Certainly on a personal level, to have a chance to play knockout cricket in a World Cup would be a very special feeling,” Hales said. “It’s a pretty tight competition and to get through is difficult… you have to beat some very good teams along the way. It would be a good achievement if we can get through in a pretty tough group, in my opinion.”However, it is certainly not a game England can take for granted. Sri Lanka have had to do it the hard way in this tournament, getting through the qualifying round after a shock opening defeat against Namibia, and then suffering heavy Super 12 defeats against Australia and New Zealand, which has left things out of their hands. Unless Afghanistan spring an upset on Australia, it’s all over for them.

“The input has been quite straightforward and the clarity is there. We’ve been pushed hard. There’s no limits with him, so we’ve been really pushed hard”Bhanuka Rajapaksa on Chris Silverwood’s contribution

“We are coming here to justify our presence over here in Australia. We just want to play good cricket,” Bhanuka Rajapaksa said. “We have already shown what we are capable of a couple of months back [at the Asia Cup] and it’s a strong side. Unfortunately not all the results have come our way, but tomorrow’s game is quite important to end on a high note.”The England game will be the third in a row played on the same SCG pitch, the surface which has offered the bowlers most help out of the three used, with quicks finding some grip for slower balls and the spinners getting some turn. They are conditions that should bring Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana into the game. Either side of his mauling by Marcus Stoinis in Perth, Hasaranga has been outstanding and Theekshana has troubled plenty of batters.Throughout the tournament, there have been some challenging pitches because of the damp start to the summer across much of Australia.”I think the numbers at the top of the order throughout the tournament have been probably lower than what you usually expect,” Hales said. “[Pitches have been] slightly different to what I’ve been used to. There’s been a fair bit of swing, a bit of seaming bounce, so it’s been very difficult. Had to hang in there at times and piece together a contribution the other night, but the weather looks a bit better going forward, so hopefully the pitches will get better as well.””We are coming here to justify our presence over here in Australia,” Bhanuka Rajapaksa said•AFP/Getty ImagesThere is an added dynamic to the contest, with Sri Lanka helmed by former England coach Chris Silverwood. Earlier this year, it was a miserable experience for Silverwood during the Ashes, a tour that cost him his job, but he has kept his counsel since and there have been signs of him having a positive impact on Sri Lanka.”It’s just another game for him,” Rajapaksa said. “The input has been quite straightforward and the clarity is there. We’ve been pushed hard. There’s no limits with him, so we’ve been really pushed hard. He just wants us to get better every day and it’s quite simple.”Injuries have not been kind to Sri Lanka, particularly those to Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madushanka, in a tournament dominated by quick bowlers, but Rajapaksa said there was no point feeling sorry for themselves.”Ifs are not going to help us now, but… of course, it has impacted the performance of the side,” he said. “But it’s not an excuse. Everyone wants to perform, it’s a major tournament. You can’t blame it on [the injuries]. We hope the guys will get better and strong when the next World Cup happens.”While Sri Lankan thoughts may be drifting to the next World Cup, England’s remain firmly on the present one. It will be in their hands to ensure this time Sydney does not mark their end point.

O segundo gol contra do zagueiro Ryan, do Criciúma.

CRICIÚMA VIRA A PARTIDA
