Fit-again Abdur Razzak replaces Arafat Sunny

Bangladesh have gone for the tried and tested in their 15-man World Twenty20 squad, as there are no major inclusions or exclusions. Mushfiqur Rahim will lead the best available team with a proper spread of allrounders, as well as specialist batsmen and bowlers.Chief selector Faruque Ahmed has called the inclusion of Sabbir Rahman, who made his debut against Sri Lanka by scoring 26 in the second Twenty20, as an opportunity for someone with potential in this format. Sabbir gets his chance after hitting six T20 fifties in the domestic competition last season.”The Bangladesh team is a blend of experience and youth,” Faruque said. “We have considered the fact that this was a world event and experience was necessary as well as giving opportunity to youngsters like Mominul Haque and Sabbir Rahman who have the potential to excel in the shortest format.”Someone like Arafat Sunny, who has impressed everyone and had been performing consistently at domestic level, had to miss out because we needed to have that balance.”Sunny misses out because Abdur Razzak, the senior left-arm spinner, has been deemed fit enough to play the tournament after he had suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month.”We have a lot of depth in our bowling. There are three pace bowlers and a seaming all-rounder. However, in our conditions spin will be the main strength and we are well covered in that area with Shakib Al Hasan, Abdur Razzak and Sohag Gazi.”I also believe this is an excellent fielding side and that was evident in the recent Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka.”Bangladesh open their World T20 campaign against Afghanistan on March 16, in the first round of the competition.Squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Mominul Haque, Nasir Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Sohag Gazi, Mashrafe Mortaza, Farhad Reza, Rubel Hossain, Al-Amin Hossain.

England performance 'not good enough' – Bell

Ian Bell could hardly hide his frustration after seeing his England team-mates deliver another batting performance of striking incompetence

‘Johnson is blowing us away’ – Bell

Ian Bell could hardly hide his frustration after seeing his England team-mates deliver another batting performance of striking incompetence.Bell was one of only three England players to reach double-figures as they were brushed aside for 172 in their first innings in Adelaide and afterwards admitted the performance was “just not good enough”.Bell finished unbeaten on 72, but could do little to stop England conceding a first-innings deficit of 398 runs. By the end of the day, Australia had extended their lead to 530 and have an excellent chance over the final two days of extending their series lead to 2-0 with three to play. England, whose top score in the series so far is 179, will probably have to bat for five sessions to save the game.”We can’t afford to be bowled out for under 200,” Bell said. “You’re not going to win anything like that. There are no excuses; it’s just not good enough. It’s another disappointing performance. There’s no getting away from it, we haven’t played very well. We’ve got to improve and improve fast.”While Bell played Mitchell Johnson with something approaching ease, his colleagues struggled. The fast bowler finished with figures of 7 for 40 with several England batsmen, especially in the lower order, looking far from comfortable when confronted with his hostility.Ian Bell kept his head – and his wicket – while all about him others were losing theirs•PA Photos”When you’re playing pace, you have to have serious courage,” Bell said. “We have to make sure that’s the first thing we have. When someone bowls at 150kph, you have to be switched on every ball. Am I scared? No, not at all scared. I can’t speak for everyone, but no.”Despite the poor start to the series, Bell remained confident that the team were capable of saving the game and clawing their way back into the series. Earlier this year, England resisted for 143 overs in Auckland to save a Test against New Zealand and a year ago, they came from 1-0 down to defeat India in India.”You’ve seen what this team has done in the past,” he said. “These games are saveable but someone is going to have to play an incredible innings. If you want to bat for a day, this is the ground to do it.”But what we’ve done in the last three innings isn’t going to get us close. So someone – or probably two or three guys – have to step up. It’s a challenge but that leads to opportunity and we have to take it.”

Dhawan happy with winning start as captain

While it felt “really nice” to begin his captaincy stint on a winning note, Shikhar Dhawan said after the victory against Kandurata Maroons, he still has much to learn as a leader

Shikhar Dhawan’s amazing year continued, as he cracked a half-century to set up Sunrisers Hyderabad’s eight-wicket win in his first match as the team’s captain. While it felt “really nice” to begin his captaincy stint on a winning note, Dhawan said after the victory against Kandurata Maroons, he still has much to learn as a leader.”It was my first day as captain. It is completely a new experience for me,” he said. “It feels really nice to win your first match as captain.”But there are still a lot of things that I need to learn. I know I will be making a lot of mistakes initially, but I will have to learn from them. This is part and parcel of the captaincy and I am enjoying it.”One of Dhawan’s questionable decisions was bowling his main slow bowler, legspinner Amit Mishra, for just one over even as Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne built towards a strong total. The pitch and the opposition prompted that decision, Dhawan said. “The wicket assisted the pacers more than the spinners. Amit Mishra was bowling well but there was hardly anything for him on this pitch.”Moreover, they had a lot of left-handers on their team. That’s why we couldn’t use him much. I felt the fast bowlers had more to offer on this track.” The other legspinner in the side, Karan Sharma, who proved effective in IPL 2013, did not bowl at all.Sangakkara and Thirimanne had added 89 for the third wicket and were increasing the innings’ momentum when Ishant Sharma bowled Thirimanne with a yorker. Ishant, the only bowler in the match to concede less than a run a ball, said he tried to keep the batsmen guessing. “When a batsman is going strong, you have to use all your experience to try and get the better of him,” Ishant told the CLT20 website. “The wicket was very good for batting and so, I knew I had to mix things up a bit.”Instead of bowling all six balls on the same spot I decided to vary my length. [In the over that Thirimanne was dismissed] I tried the fuller delivery, the slower one, bowled a bit short and he hit me for two fours. Off the fifth ball I thought I should bowl a yorker and fortunately I got it right. He tried to go for a big one and got out.”India’s frequent clashes with Sri Lanka helped, Ishant said. “Most of the Kandurata Maroons players are international cricketers and hence we know what field to set to each of them and what strategy to form against each of them. We play a lot against them and we know their games inside out. That really helps.”Ishant had good words for Dhawan’s captaincy. “He has evolved so much as a cricketer in the past one year and his confidence has risen up to another level. That shows in his captaincy as well,” he said. “For instance, today, we were going for runs when Sangakkara and Thirimanne were batting but he created and maintained a very calm atmosphere on the field. He knows he has a good team and he believes in us as much as he believes in his own abilities with the bat.”Dhawan’s 71, in a 121-run opening stand with Parthiv Patel in the chase of 169, capped off his fine day. He found batting a bit difficult to begin with, Dhawan said, but Parthiv’s assured batting eased the pressure on him. “We knew we could chase down the total if we batted sensibly. The ball was coming on to the bat very nicely. The pitch had even bounce. It is not difficult to play shots on this wicket.”But I wasn’t connecting the ball well at the start. At the other end, Parthiv Patel was batting nicely and hitting the ball well. So, I thought I can take my time to settle down. In the end, we performed really well.”

Surrey dusted off to go again

Last year 7th, CC Div 1; Group stages, T20; 2nd Group B, CB402012 in a nutshell: A season overshadowed by tragedy. While it would be an exaggeration to suggest all was progressing well before the death of Tom Maynard – Surrey’s form had been modest – the club faced a desperate struggle to retain equilibrium afterwards. That they retained their Division One status and missed out on a CB40 semi-final by the skin of their teeth might be considered admirable. Amid the shock, few individuals progressed. Surrey utilised 24 players in the Championship alone, seeming unsure who was best at the top of the order and rarely batting with assurance. The bowling of Stuart Meaker, who was not flattered by his figures, was a bright spot but Jacques Rudolph was a disappointment, Steven Davies and Chris Jordan were dropped and Jon Lewis, Jade Dernbach and Chris Tremlett either rarely played or struggled to make an impact. All have strong mitigating factors, but there is no avoiding the fact that 2012 was a dark year in the history of the club.2013 prospects: Surrey look a very different team in 2013. Gone is the old captain, Rory Hamilton-Brown, gone is the mainstay of the batting for a generation, Mark Ramprakash, and gone are several of the bright young things (Maynard, Chris Jordan and Matt Spriegel) who it was hoped would form the spine of the team for years to come. Recognising that more maturity was required in the dressing room, the club brought in Vikram Solanki (37 on April 1) and Gary Keedy (38) to join the likes of Zander de Bruyn (37), Jon Lewis (37) and Gareth Batty (35) as well as big name overseas signings Graeme Smith (32) and Ricky Ponting (38). Some good young players remain: George Edwards and Matt Dunn are among the most promising fast bowlers; Jason Roy and Rory Burns are talented young batsmen and all can be seen as products of the club’s youth system. But the balance between youth and experience has swung sharply. A trophy seems unlikely – the batting looks a bit fragile for that – but decent limited-overs form and the comfortable retention of Division One status should not be beyond them.Key player: While Surrey have other wicketkeeping options in Gary Wilson, Steve Davies could be seen as a barometer of this side. He typifies the Chris Adams regime: recruited on a large salary and amid much expectation, his career has not progressed as some predicted. His talent remains undoubted but Surrey – and their director of cricket, Adams – could do with him producing more to justify the investment they made.Bright young thing: George Edwards, 20, is a strong fast bowler with some ability with the bat. Given sustained fitness and opportunity, he could develop into a top-quality player for club and country.Captain/coach: It was always going to take time to turn things around at The Oval. Just as things were, at long last, improving, the club were thrown into turmoil by the death of Maynard and the team required rebuilding. This is Plan B for Chris Adams. How much time he will be given to get things right this time remains uncertain but the club have backed him to the hilt by bringing in Smith as captain. Such investment is likely to demand a return.Cricinfo’s verdict: It may frustrate supporters, but Surrey enter this season at the start of another rebuilding process. Having lost several of those seen as the future of the club, it may take time for others to settle in their place. How much patience will be shown towards Adams and co. remains to be seen but the squad is deep and experienced and, led by Smith, they will surely prove tougher, more obdurate opposition.

UP win two-run thriller with last ball run-out

North ZonePunjab were able to defend 168 against Jammu & Kashmir in a 23-over reduced contest, winning by 48 runs. The Punjab openers compiled a 102-run stand after being put in to bat. Ravi Inder Singh top-scored with an aggressive 60 off 41 balls as Punjab ended up scoring 168 for eight in their 23 overs.J&K were unable to string together useful partnerships as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Parvez Rasool scored 33, with the next highest being opener Shubham Khajuria’s 25, as J&K batsmen were dismissed for 120. Yuvraj Singh was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 19.The match between Haryana and Services was abandoned without a ball bowled, due to rain. Haryana are currently languishing near the bottom of the table as they lost their only full game, while suffering two no-results because of inclement weather. Services have also been hit with two no-results but are second in the table, tied on points with Delhi.Delhi and Himachal Pradesh’s match was abandoned due to rain. Rainy weather has already caused a number of no-results early in this Vijay Hazare Trophy for North Zone. Delhi are on top of the table, ahead of Services on net run-rate. Himachal have yet to win a game in the competition.Central ZoneRajasthan completed a convincing, 78-run victory over Vidarbha. Vidarbha’s decision to field first almost paid dividends as Rajasthan collapsed to 61 for 6. Fast bowler Shrikant Wagh took his maiden five-wicket haul, claiming five of the first six wickets to finish with figures of 6 for 42. However, Raman Chahar, who top-scored with 43, Madhur Khatri and Gajendra Singh then added some crucial runs before Rajasthan were all out for 208 in 46 overs.Vidarbha’s innings started solidly, with Fazal and Akshay Kolhar putting on 62 for the first wicket. However once Fazal was bowled by Khatri Vidarbha lost nine wickets for 68 runs as they folded for 130. Spinners Khatri and Gajendra played a decisive role once again, as they claimed career-best figures of 4 for 25 and 4 for 28 respectively.A run out off the last ball gave Uttar Pradesh a thrilling two-run win over Railways. UP’s innings started abjectly as they were 9 for 2. Suresh Raina and Mohammad Kaif put together a 104-run stand to lend stability to the innings. However UP lost a few more wickets to leave them at a compromising 142 for 6 in 35.1 overs. Askhdeep Nath and Eklavya Dwivedi helped UP recover with an 85-run stand as they finished 272 for 9.Towards the end Railways were staring at defeat, as they lost two wickets in the 49th over, followed by a wicket off the first ball in the final over. Karan Sharma scored 17 runs off the next four balls to push Railways to the brink of victory, before Shailender Gehlot was run out by Suresh Raina with the score at 270. The win takes Uttar Pradesh to the top of the Central Zone table.West ZoneAn unbeaten career-best 88 from Smit Patel guided Gujarat to a six-wicket win over Baroda. Having chosen to bowl first, the Gujarat bowlers kept Baroda in check by picking up regular wickets, with Rush Kalaria picking up 3 for 42.Baroda’s batsmen, including Ambati Rayadu and Yusuf Pathan, failed to capitalise. The only resistance came from Aditya Waghmode who scored a career-best 66. Chasing 224 for victory, Gujarat had an early stutter, but the middle order, led by Patel and Manprit Juneja (58), ensured a comfortable win for the side. The win takes Gujarat to the top of the West Zone table with nine points.Mumbai’s pace trio of Kshemal Waingankar, Ajit Agarkar and Aavishkar Salvi set up a 126-run win over Saurashtra. Mumbai scored a daunting 283, helped by an unbeaten debut century from Siddhesh Lad and a half-century from Shoaib Shaikh. Lad’s 91-ball innings included seven fours and six sixes.Set a target of 284 to win, Saurashtra struggled from the start, at one point being 5 for 61. Agarkar bowled a miserly 4 for 19 in 9 overs, backed by a maiden five-wicket haul from Waingankar. Chirag Jani’s 61 was the only form of resistance as Saurashtra folded for 157 all out inside of 42 overs.South ZoneAndhra failed to defend their total of 256 as Kerala won by six wickets. Unbeaten half-centuries from middle-order batsmen Robert Fernandez and Raiphi Gomez helped Kerala achieve the target with more than three overs to spare.Kerala put Andhra in to bat and their openers responded with a 103-run stand, before S Sreesanth and Rohan Prem struck for Kerala. Wicket-keeper Srikar Bharat top-scored with 74 and was ably supported by Jyothi Sai Krishna (61) as Andhra finished at 256 for 6.Kerala’s chase was shaky before the middle order steadied the innings. Fernandez anchored the innings with an unbeaten 85, with vital contributions from Sachin Baby and Gomez, who scored 68 off 47 balls.Karnataka continued their unbeaten streak in this competition, comfortably chasing down Tamil Nadu’s 250-run target with seven wickets in hand and more than four overs to spare.Tamil Nadu’s decision to bat first almost came undone as they were 4 for 85 halfway through their innings. A 142-run stand for the sixth wicket between Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar lent some respectability to the score, as Tamil Nadu reached 250. Manish Pandey’s unbeaten 81, along with KK Nair’s 64 not out, helped guide Karnataka to 252 for three in reply to Tamil Nadu’s 250 for 8.Hyderabad sauntered home with an eight-wicket win over Goa in a match that was reduced to 25 overs.Goa had an explosive start with rapid fifties from top order batsmen Swapnil Asnodkar (70 off 50 balls), Sagun Kamat (63 off 39) and Manvinder Bisla (40 off 26), as they raced to 225 for seven at a run-rate of 9.00.Hyderabad kept their cool and were guided by Dwaraka Ravi Teja’s imperious 111 off 67 balls. Akash Bhandari, who picked up 2 for 36 earlier, scored 78 off 42 balls as Hyderabad reached their target by the end of the 23rd over.

Women's World Cup trophy detained at airport

The 2013 Women’s World Cup trophy replica, brought to Mumbai for a promotional launch of the event, has been detained by the customs officials at the Mumbai airport. The tournament will be held in the city early next year. The trophy arrived via baggage from Dubai, and according to customs rules trophies can only be brought into the country through cargo.”The trophy should be brought through cargo. In the past we have notified that it shouldn’t be part of the baggage. Prior permissions are required to bring them as part of baggage. As per the regulation, the authorities will have to pay a duty on it,” Airports customs official PM Saleem told .Saleem also mentioned that he had received a letter from the BCCI requesting for an exemption from taxes. However, without documents signifying the approval of the central government in this regard, the trophy will not be released, it is understood. An ICC spokesperson, however, mentioned that the ICC possessed all the necessary paperwork to avoid this.”Despite having all the appropriate paperwork, Mumbai Customs decided to confiscate the trophy. This is the third time. The first time was when they confiscated the 2011 ICC World Cup marketing trophy, then the World T20 marketing trophy and now the ICC Women’s World Cup marketing trophy. All the trophies are replicas,” he said.In 2011, the trophy awarded to the Indian team after they won the World Cup had been the original trophy that had arrived in the country much earlier: the replica had been taken back to Dubai following a similar customs roadblock.

Lancashire move Surrey match

Lancashire have moved another Championship fixture away from Old Trafford due to the wet summer

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Aug-2012Lancashire have moved another Championship fixture away from Old Trafford due to the wet summer and the impact on producing enough high-standard pitches on the new square.Their final match of the season, against Surrey from September 11-14, will now be played at Aigburth, Liverpool, after the same switch was made for the Durham clash at the end of August. The Surrey game starts the day after the Twenty20 international against South Africa at Old Trafford – while the ground also hosts England Women in as part of a double-header – and the club have felt it prudent to not risk the quality of Championship pitch for what is shaping as a likely relegation tussle.Mike Watkinson, the director of cricket, said: “The period of extremely wet weather, which forced us to move the Durham game to Liverpool, hasn’t sufficiently improved to re-establish the grass cover on the newer pitches on the square. We have also got the International T20 matches the day before.”Taking these factors into consideration, and the fact that we have made a significant investment in the facilities and pitches at Liverpool, we felt that this was the correct decision. I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but I am sure that our members and supporters will understand the need to prioritise cricket.”The club added that the pitch used for last week’s England Lions-Australia A match at Old Trafford – which was the same surface that will be used for next year’s Ashes Test – had received “excellent” feedback from players and officials.

'Perera reminds me of Klusener' – Ford

Graham Ford, the Sri Lanka coach from South Africa, has said that Thisara Perera reminded him of former South Africa allrounder Lance Klusener

Sa'adi Thawfeeq19-Jun-2012Graham Ford, the Sri Lanka coach from South Africa, has said that Thisara Perera reminded him of former South Africa allrounder Lance Klusener. Perera’s outstanding performances with the ball in the ODIs against Pakistan earned him the Man-of-the-Series award.”The way he hit the ball the other day he reminded me very much of Lance,” Ford said. “He is only 23 and is going to develop and get better and more effective. The more times he handles situations the better he will be. He is a wonderful striker of the ball and he’s got the same sort of power that Lance had. He is an all-round cricketer just like Lance and contributes in all areas.”It’s very exciting for Sri Lanka cricket to have a young man coming through the ranks and he should be around for a long time and hopefully winning games with his performance in all aspects of the game.”Klusener, reputed for his big hitting in the late stages of an innings, was a left-hand bat and right-arm medium-pace bowler like Perera is. Perera has already developed a reputation for being a finisher with the bat in ODIs. He took 11 wickets at an average of 15.54 against Pakistan which included a hat-trick in the fourth ODI, making him only the fourth Sri Lanka bowler to achieve the feat after Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga and Farveez Maharoof.Ford had earlier said that Perera, who has been selected for the upcoming Tests against Pakistan, could establish himself in the Sri Lanka Test side.Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain, also heaped praise on Perera. “He is still young and we knew he has a lot of potential,” Jayawardene said. “The more games he gets under his belt he’ll improve as a genuine all-rounder but he had to work really hard on his bowling in the last six month to get to where he is now. He is one of those guys who worked really hard whether it’s fielding, batting or bowling. A lot of credit to him, a great series, hopefully he’ll continue to do what he has done for us in the future.”Perera, whose performances helped Sri Lanka take the series 3-1, said he had done some bowling drills with Champaka Ramanayake, the Sri Lanka fast bowling coach. “I have been selected as a bowling all-rounder so my first priority is as a bowler,” Perera said.
