Leeds United have a big job on their hands as they make their return to the Premier League.

As impressive as United were on their way to winning the Championship this term, their squad does need bolstering as it contains a number of players that were part of the team that finished 13th before Marcelo Bielsa reinvigorated the squad.

One area that Victor Orta seemingly had earmarked for improvement was at left-back, with Phil Hay reporting that Leeds were very interested in Joe Bryan from Fulham, but it seems as though their chances of landing him may have taken a big hit.

The playoff final will go down in history as Bryan’s final, scoring twice including a 40-yard stunner from a free-kick, and it has to be said that his stock has never been higher than it is right now.

United will probably have to pay a pretty penny for the full-back after his playoff heroics, but what is more poignant is that Fulham now have no reason to sell him.

The Cottagers are no longer bound by the financial constraints of the Championship, they’ve just won a game worth a reported £135m to them, and Shahid Khan wrote off a lot of their debt only a couple of weeks ago.

Fulham simply have more financial might than Leeds at the moment, and unless Andrea Radrizzani submits an eye-opening offer for Bryan, it’ll be tough to land their man.

The fact of the matter is that United may be back to square one in their pursuit of a new left-back and Orta may have to draw up a new shortlist of full-back targets to look into as a deal for the 26-year-old looks like it could now be tough to negotiate.

Newcastle United are reportedly looking at a triple swoop for Patrik Schick, Todd Cantwell and Chris Basham, according to the Daily Mail.

As per the outlet, the Czech Republic striker is their top transfer target for the summer window, as they also look to raid Norwich City and Sheffield United.

Schick, who is an AS Roma player but spent the 2019/20 season on loan at RB Leipzig in Germany, scored a relatively impressive 10 goals and made a further three assists in 26 games in all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

Cantwell managed seven goals and two assists in 40 matches in all competitions for the Canaries in the 2019/20 season despite them being relegated from the Premier League.

Basham played in every single game for the Blades in their top-flight campaign and helped them to finish ninth in the table, as he averaged 2.2 tackles, two interceptions and 4.4 clearances a match (per Whoscored).

With Schick valued at reported budget of £35m.

However, this figure could well be increased if the proposed takeover at St. James’ Park is approved by the Premier League, meaning that more money is likely to become available for potential spending.

Nevertheless, the Magpies have had to plan for it not happening with the summer window officially opening and have apparently identified Schick, Cantwell and Basham as possible additions, all of which seem astute given their 2019/20 figures.

Many Manchester United fans have been reflecting on a memorable goal from Javier Hernandez, after the club’s official Twitter account shared footage of ‘Chicharito’ opening the scoring against Petr Cech in the Premier League. 

Hernandez has scored plenty of impressive goals throughout his long career so far, and although he is best known as a deadly poacher inside the box, it is his sensational finish at the end of a well-worked team move that has fans drooling on Twitter this week.

United posted footage of his strike at home to the Blues, a goal that helped Sir Alex Ferguson’s men stave off a spirited Chelsea side managed by Carlo Ancelotti. He remarkably broke the deadlock against the London club in just 36 seconds, latching onto a sublime pass from Park-Ji Sung, and slotting the ball into the back of the net past the helpless goalkeeper (Goal).

After a header from Nemanja Vidic put the game beyond Chelsea, Fergie’s Red Devils moved within one point of the coveted Premier League trophy. They went on to win the 19th English title in the club’s history at the end of the season.

Unsurprisingly, a whole number of the Old Trafford faithful are still raving about the goal machine’s “brilliant” effort, with one fan cheekily dubbing the Mexican “Chelsea’s worst nightmare.”

Bobby Duncan’s acrimonious ending to his Liverpool career underlined the fragility and uncertainty underpinning the development of young footballing prodigies.

Dubbed “the next Robbie Fowler”, Duncan could have added fuel to a perpetually rising fire which represents the rivalry between Manchester City and Liverpool.

Snatched away from Pep Guardiola’s grasp in 2018, Duncan’s goal scoring prowess rapidly revealed the reason behind Liverpool’s swoop. A return of 25 goals and eight assists in 36 appearances for the U18s pointed towards the emergence of a player who was indeed capable of emulating Fowler.

Until, of course, everything came crashing down in the summer of 2019. Following a fiasco involving his agent, one rather inappropriately played out in the public eye, the exciting wonderkid moved to Fiorentina.

That chapter has finished now but the closing of one page leads to the opening of another, and Duncan’s exit does not necessarily imply that Liverpool will not be bringing a talented striker into the senior squad in the coming years.

Indeed, Paul Glatzel was almost as impressive as Duncan in the 2018/19 season, scoring 21 goals and providing four assists in 30 appearances. Their respective records are remarkably similar but neither have kicked on this season for contrasting reasons.

Glatzel, 19, has been ruled out with a knee injury and has missed the opportunity to make his senior bow in the midst of a campaign in which Klopp has been willing and able to promote youngsters into the first team squad.

But, despite his absence, the club still appear to hold high hopes for his future.

An academy source recently spoke of his potential to elevate into the senior setup while speaking to The Athletic.

“Glatzel knows where the ball is.

“There is cold blood running through his veins. Nothing really phases him. If he gets over his injury, he’s got a great chance.”

The key here lies in the final point. If he can conquer this setback then he will be in with a chance of breaking through, but lengthy injuries are historically problematic and carry the potential to disrupt a player’s development.

However, fans can take solace from the fact that he reportedly smashed the lactate test on the first day of pre-season training in 2019, beating Yasser Larouci in the process in a feat that attests to his physical prowess.

Perhaps he will not be capable of triumphing in the lactate test immediately after he returns from the lengthy lay off but evidently he is a natural athlete, and that can only be conducive to a positive career in the game whether that be at Liverpool or elsewhere.

The decision to offer Glatzel a long-term contract in September 2019 could well be an indication of the club’s desire to ensure that Duncan remains an anomaly to the rule, a dark stain in an otherwise harmonious and focused academy system where everyone shares the same common goal: do everything in your power to play your way into Klopp’s first-team.

It remains to be seen how Glatzel will perform following his comeback from injury but murmurs emerging from the club, combined with his clinical record in 2018/19, suggest he could be the next academy goal machine to complete the transition into the senior squad.

Earlier this month, a number of Everton fans insisted that they were not interested in seeing Niasse back in the first team.

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after a summer transfer target for the club in Ollie Watkins hit two goals for Brentford against QPR on Monday evening.

The 23-year-old was the subject of interest from the Eagles back in the summer, and the south Londoners even submitted an £11m bid for the forward – Palace’s offer came after they were believed to be circling Watkins back in 2018 as well.

Eventually, the 5 foot 11 attacker signed a new four-year contract with the Bees.

Watkins has been in fine form for the Championship side so far this term, scoring 10 goals in 14 starts – he is behind only 11-goal Aleksandar Mitrovic in the scoring ranks.

Some Palace fans on Twitter had already been speaking about Watkins earlier this season after he scored a hat-trick against Barnsley, and they have been drawn back to their keyboards after the same player scored twice in Monday’s west London derby.

A lot has been said about Riqui Puig already – the 20-year-old pearl of La Masia is definitely one of the Barcelona youngsters the Blaugrana have high hopes for.

But his situation has been causing an internal debate in recent times – he seems to be too good for the Segunda Division B, the third level of football in Spain, and yet, there’s no room for him in the senior team.

And seeing how he’s been a victim of some harsh treatment by the opposition at Barcelona B, one thing became crystal clear – he shouldn’t stay there any longer as the risk became too big.

But if the recent reports coming from Sport are true, Puig refuses to leave the club any time soon and is determined to make it at the Catalan capital.

While that sort of attitude is certainly praiseworthy and admirable, it could be the thing that comes back to bite him in the end.

Staying loyal to Barcelona is definitely a good sign for the club but his stubbornness to leave on loan in order to get some valuable experience and minutes, and more importantly, get away from the difficult circumstances of the Segunda Division B, might hamper his short term development.

And yes, it might be far too early to actually talk about such drastic measures but it’s unlikely he continues his development by staying put at Barcelona B.

According to Sport, that is exactly his idea – staying and becoming good enough for Ernesto Valverde to include him in the senior squad.

But can that actually happen if he doesn’t make that necessary step up?

At the moment, it seems that Puig is choosing the absolute worst option presented to him and for his and the club’s sake, let’s hope it doesn’t backfire.

Whether or not Andrea Radrizzani will sell a slice of his stake at Leeds has been a topic doing the rounds for what feels like an eternity.

The Italian businessman hit back in February, suggesting that the idea of a total sale was nonsense.

However, the fact he could be open to more investment further down the line hasn’t been ruled out and that’s clear for all to see judging by his latest comments.

Whether or not you’re a fan of the Qatar Sports Investment who own European heavyweights PSG, it’s hard to deny their funding couldn’t help take Leeds further up the pyramid in England.

Their financial might has been colossal in the French capital, helping them to buy players like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

They’ve won multiple titles in what has been one of the greatest periods in their history, and it’s all primarily come as a result of QSI’s funding.

Supporters seem divided on what the future would hold if they arrived in west Yorkshire in a story lingering around Elland Road since June.

L’Equipe initially reported that discussions could take place between Nesser al-Khelaifi and the Leeds board but nothing seemed to materialise.

However, the potential of mass investment further down the line could soon become a reality. Telling The Times, Radrizzani said the following about future buyers:

“The option of Qatar Sports Investment and Nasser — first of all they are friends, we have had a good relationship for a long time. Secondly, they have the possibility to bring this club to compete with Manchester City, so for the fans that could be a fantastic opportunity.”

The fact Leeds could be on par with a club like Manchester City is quite the statement but it’s hard to deny just what added financial firepower can bring to a club.

After all, the way PSG’s revenue has spiralled in a positive fashion is quite frankly breathtaking.

Before QSI took over, their total revenue from the 2010/11 season stood at €101m (£88.7m at the time of writing). Once they’d been in control for a season, that went up to €221m (£194.2m).

But the biggest sign of just how far PSG have come under their Qatari owners is the €542m (£476.3m) they brought in from the 2017/18 season.

Considering that number, is it really any surprise the Ligue 1 side have done so well? Probably not.

It’s investment and revenue that shows just how Leeds could place themselves back on the map, competing among the big boys of English football again.

The club have been stuck in the doldrums of Championship football for a while and not since 2000/01 have they been in the Champions League.

Investment has been made from Radrizzani but added help from a company as rich as QSI could finally be the catalyst they need to get back into the Premier League and consequently compete for European places as well.

It’s a long way off, but it’s not beyond the realms of fantasy. Just look at how Wolves have now placed themselves in the Europa League.
