North London derby loving Dele Alli looks set for perfectly timed Spurs return

[ad_pod ]

Dele Alli is back for Tottenham Hotspur.

Town criers should be announcing this news as loudly as they possibly can up and down the Tottenham High Road, such is its importance to Spurs’ chances of winning the upcoming North London derby.

Mauricio Pochettino has endured a difficult start to the season, with the club losing to Newcastle United and, really, stealing a point from Manchester City in a smash and grab raid that almost put the Hatton Garden robbers to shame.

Against Arsenal, Spurs will need all the help they can get. Versus Newcastle, it was clear there was an imagination barrier, an inability to play through their low block, and they were eventually reduced to just passing the ball sideways repeatedly before lobbing in a hopeful cross that was easily dealt with.

It must be said that Arsenal won’t play that way; they’ll attempt to get on the ball, move it properly, look to attack. And that’s where Alli comes in.

In the first three games of the campaign, something has been amiss with Harry Kane and it was never clearer than against the Magpies.

He had one shot on goal, per WhoScored, and dropped too deep all too regularly.

If he continues in such a vein against Arsenal, Alli can dart into the spaces that he vacates, occupying the Gunners’ defence.

The England midfielder has a strong record against the Gunners, having scored three goals and registered two assists against them in eight games, including a lavish chip at the Emirates in the League Cup last season.

Spurs won that game 2-0, but they have not won at the home of their rivals in the league since 2010.

If they are to break that hoodoo, they will need Alli and Kane to dovetail as effectively as they did in that cup game.

To revisit the goal is to see what each can bring; Kane dropped deep and curled a pass into Alli’s path, around 25 yards from goal. He brought it down and then chipped it over Petr Cech, before celebrating wildly in front of the away end.

Arsenal have a remarkably strong attack at this point and the main thing it comprises is pace: Nicolas Pepe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette are all quick across the ground.

But their defence is shaky; David Luiz was awful against Liverpool at Anfield and showed that he can be dragged out of position by clever movement and slick interplay.

Alli does exactly that and offers the opportunity for Spurs to actually let Kane roam, instead of attempting to implore him to stay in the box.

The two can link and, when Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura are potentially added to the equation, Spurs’ attack looks all the fiercer.

Christian Eriksen’s inclusion, of course, remains in doubt after he was benched against Newcastle.

But it is Alli’s inclusion that should grab the headlines.

He is the secret ingredient to transforming a Spurs forward line that looked all too static this past weekend, and he could be key to bringing the best out of Kane and finally breaking that lengthy Emirates hex.

Liverpool fans troll Harry Maguire following England win

[ad_pod ]

A number of Liverpool fans have taken to social media to troll Harry Maguire after the Manchester United centre-back conceded a penalty during England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Kosovo on Tuesday night.

To be honest, none of England’s back four covered themselves in much glory during the clash with Kosovo, which saw the Three Lions record a 5-3 victory.

Maguire had some tough moments during the 90 minutes – one in particular came early in the second period when he conceded a penalty for a rash challenge.

The former Sheffield United youngster had actually taken a heavy touch before lunging to make the tackle, which ultimately saw the visitors score their third of the night.

In the end, Gareth Southgate’s side had more than enough to continue their 100% record in Group A.

Nonetheless, the Liverpool fans could not resist a dig at the 26-year-old, who cost their bitter rivals United in the region of £80m during the summer.

Manchester United fans react as Tottenham interested in signing Bruno Fernandes

[ad_pod ]

So the Bruno Fernandes transfer saga takes a fresh twist. The Portugal international has been the subject of intense transfer scrutiny during the summer window, and often with conflicting reports over whether he even is a Manchester United target.

Certain reports in recent weeks had claimed that the Red Devils were interested in signing the Sporting Lisbon midfielder, but it now appears the Manchester side could be eclipsed by a team they are all too familiar with.

According to Portuguese publication O Jogo, United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham are in the race to sign Fernandes this summer with just a week left in the transfer window.

After hearing the news that a swoop for the 24-year-old could seemingly be hijacked by the north London side, United fans took to Twitter to voice their frustrations about the update.

Many Red Devils supporters revealed that the club would have to take a “monumental L” were Fernandes to end up joining Spurs, and criticised Ed Woodward for seemingly failing to get a deal done.

Indeed, some even suggested that the club would be “finito” if a worst-case scenario panned out whereby the club missed out on their prime transfer targets.

Tottenham hit snag in bid to sign Ryan Sessegnon on deadline day

[ad_pod ]Football FanCast’s News articles summarise the biggest stories in world football, based on information from other sources.According to The Mirror’s Darren Lewis on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur’s bid to sign Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon on deadline day has hit a snag, shortly after their move for Juventus attacker Paulo Dybala fell through.

BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein performed a major U-turn on Thursday as he went from saying that a Spurs move for the Argentina international was very close, to saying that it had been called off after the Serie A giants decided that they wanted to keep the 25-year-old.

Despite that disappointment, it seemed likely that the north London outfit were going to get a deal over the line for Sessegnon, with BBC Sport reporting on Wednesday that they had agreed a £25m fee with the Championship club that would see Josh Onomah move the other way.

[ad_pod ]

However, Lewis says that talks between the two clubs have now hit an impasse, just hours before the deadline.

It remains to be seen whether or not the transfer can be salvaged, but Tottenham will surely want to ensure they get it over the line considering the huge potential he looks to have with 25 goals and 18 assists in 120 Fulham appearances despite his tender years, as well as the fact that he is capable of playing either as a left-back or on the left wing.

Everton transfer roundup: Kenny to leave on loan, Gonalons linked, Mateta interest

[ad_pod ]

Everton boss Marco Silva will no doubt have been disappointed to see his Toffees team miss out on Europa League football last season. In the end, his side finished three points off Wolves, who clinched seventh spot. It should be a busy summer at Goodison Park as the side look to climb further up the table, so let’s take a look at the latest speculation involving the Merseysiders…

Kenny embarks on Bundesliga adventure

The first big news in this roundup is not of a new arrival, but of a departure. Earlier today, it was revealed that defender Jonjoe Kenny will spend next season on loan at Bundesliga side Schalke 04. The German team struggled last season as they finished in 14th place, and will be hoping that the arrival of Kenny will help shore up their defence.

Gonalons to Goodison?

In terms of incomings, AS Roma’s Maxime Gonalons is on Everton’s radar according to L’Equipe. The Frenchman spent last season on loan at Sevilla but managed only 10 appearances and will therefore be sent out on a temporary basis once again. West Ham are also interested.

Mateta interest

L’Equipe are also reporting that Everton are interested in Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The former Lyon striker scored 14 goals in the Bundesliga last season and has attracted the attention of several clubs in Europe. The Toffees will need to beat Marseille, Monaco and others to his signature.

Lacazette enjoying his holiday playing basketball with friends

[ad_pod ]

Now that the Premier League season is long behind us, the players can finally unwind and step away from the football pitch to do something else instead.

Alexandre Lacazette has been doing exactly that, if his latest

/By3ETf9nyw4/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram snaps are anything to go by, and was seen playing basketball in his time off. He recently posted a video on social media giving us a glimpse of what’s been going on on the court.

Seeing how the 28-year-old forward has had a pretty decent season in the Arsenal shirt, scoring 13 goals and assisting a further 12, a little relaxation and fun away from the “office” could be just what the good doctor prescribed.

Unfortunately, his tally wasn’t enough to lead the Gunners to any trophies last season but the Europa League final was definitely a step in the right direction.

Still, if the reports are to be believed, Unai Emery is quite happy with his striker and the talks about a possible renewal are already underway.

Performance in Numbers: Townsend has to improve in key area if he makes switch to Leicester

[ad_pod ]

Brendan Rodgers has managed to rejuvenate Leicester since he came in only a matter of months ago, turning around their fortunes in some style.

He’s put the swagger back into the Foxes’ football with Jamie Vardy playing like a man possessed under the new manager.

However, Rodgers still needs to sort out what has become a rather troubling wide area.

Harvey Barnes only found the net once after returning from a loan spell with West Brom but he still remains an incredibly talented young player.

Though on the right flank, there are questions marks over Demarai Gray and Rachid Ghezzal.

Both have struggled for end product and therefore the potential arrival of Andros Townsend, who is the subject of interest per The Mirror, would be shrewd.

The winger scored nine times in all competitions over the course of the 2018/19 term so would go a long way to solving a lack of goals in those areas of the pitch.

Despite that, he has to get better in possession of the ball.

Last season he was dispossessed 75 times in 38 matches. Comparing that to Gray, he lost the ball 38 times in four fewer games.

Townsend’s dribbling ability is arguably greater but if he is to come in and replace the former Birmingham man, this is an aspect of his game he’ll have to get better at, particularly if he joins a bigger club.

Coincidentally, the 27-year-old was dispossessed seven times in 1-0 win over the Foxes back in December. He lost the ball six times in one game too.

Being robbed of the ball appeared to be a recurring theme in the former England international’s game last campaign, losing possession three times in as many as five matches.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

In clashes versus the top sides he was a more consistent performer. He didn’t lose the ball once in two outings against Liverpool whilst the same can be said for away clashes against Tottenham and Manchester City.

That encounter against City saw him net a long-range screamer, marking one of his finest performances in an Eagles shirt to date.

If Townsend joins Leicester and irons out this one flaw in his game, he can become a major player for Rodgers.

West Ham: Reece Oxford’s exit should only induce shrugged shoulders

With a proper overhaul surely required to take West Ham United to the level Manuel Pellegrini wants them at, there have to be some sacrifices. That’s just life.

Cruel, cruel life.

In order to sign new players, some of the existing lot surplus to requirements have to make way.

It seems like the Hammers are already preparing for a busy summer window and have come to terms with Reece Oxford’s seemingly imminent departure. The youngster is keen on moving permanently to Bundesliga outfit Augsburg, according to reports (via Sky Sports) and, to be fair, it’s all a bit meh.

Indeed, the 20-year-old, who made history in becoming the Hammers youngest ever Premier League player, is enjoying life in Germany and a deal is said to be close.

He’s grown fond of the Bundesliga as his current employers are keen on making him an important cog in their defence. Oxford might’ve only made 6 appearances so far, but impressive stats like 2.3 clearances and 1.8 interceptions per game (stats via WhoScored) have made Augsburg fond of his talents.

It’s not as if his talents have ever been questioned. It’s just that things haven’t worked out since his stunning debut and everyone has, well, moved on.

With Pellegrini now trusting Issa Diop as his future defensive general and keen on making some signings to reinforce his back-line, Oxford’s services aren’t really required anymore. Despite his early debut, he never fit into the intensity of the Premier League, costing West Ham quite a few times.

While it’ll be disappointing to see an academy graduate leave so early, it won’t really sting the Hammers. They won’t really be in trouble without him and can take advantage of his sale, bringing funds back into the club.
