Jetro Willems’ form shows he would be an astute permanent signing by Newcastle

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

The summer signing of Jetro Willems went somewhat under the radar, due in part to Allan Saint-Maximin joining at the same time, but he is quickly proving himself to arguably be their best capture of the previous transfer window.

Newcastle spent big on the likes of Saint-Maximin and Joelinton, but loanee Willems has outperformed both and looks natural in the left wing-back role at St James’ Park, making him a valuable asset to Steve Bruce.

The Magpies boss has set-up with the same formation in the majority of the 11 Premier League games he has overseen, and Willems is a commanding figure in the 5-3-2 formation.

His pace and tireless energy allows him to get up and down the flank with great effect, and it hasn’t taken long for him to win over the fans.

An expertly taken goal at Anfield helped with that, but in truth he has been effective in a number of games, and defensively has helped his side keep three clean sheets in the league.

His 2.1 tackles per game, according to WhoScored, have been crucial to that. Only two players in the squad have averaged a higher amount, and considering his usefulness going forward there aren’t many more well-rounded players than him at the club.

The only downside is that he is not yet a permanent Newcastle player, but judging by his stats so far the Magpies should look to meet the €11m (£9.5m) agreed clause with parent club Eintracht Frankfurt.

He has impressed with his close control and clever touches at times, too. He has only averaged one successful dribble per game but he is unpredictable and adept with both feet, and that was what allowed him to get the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold for his Anfield goal.

Willems’ technical ability has been recognised by Guus Hiddink, and the former Chelsea boss previously suggested the Netherlands international could be “as good as Roberto Carlos”.

Though it looks unlikely he will reach such heights, his ten key passes in the league prove that he is deserving of greater praise than what he has received so far, and if he maintains his current level then he should help his team move away from relegation trouble.

To do that he will need to improve his pass accuracy of 77%. It is a poor return and a contributing factor to Newcastle’s terrible average of 38% possession, and if the Magpies are to begin imposing themselves on matches then he will have to perform better.

That being said, £9.5m is still a bit of a bargain in the current transfer climate, and given the dearth of quality in that area of the squad, it is a deal the club should look to get over the line soon.

Mauricio Pochettino "unravelling" at Spurs, says Samuel Luckhurst

[ad_pod ]Tottenham are struggling to do anything positive nowadays, and you’ve got to start asking yourself, where and how did it all go so wrong? It was only last season when we saw Mauricio Pochettino’s plucky Spurs side, depleted from two baron transfer windows, defy all odds as they valiantly took on the petrodollar powerhouse that is Manchester City and the youthful vigour of Ajax, a side who had already beaten European powerhouses Real Madrid and Juventus. Now they’re struggling to find the answer against four-tier side Colchester United, whose final competitive match last season didn’t come against Liverpool at the Bernabeu in the Champions League final but Lincoln City at Sincil Bank.Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Carabao Cup might not be the most glamorous competition on offer but at least it handed Pochettino a chance to end the club’s 12-year spell without silverware, and his personal woes as their leader since 2014.

For Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, the result was further evidence that the Argentinian might now be out of his depth…

West Ham fans hail Arthur Masuaku after statistical boost

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans have hailed defender Arthur Masuaku after an exceptional display against Norwich City at the weekend.

The Irons posted a tweet on Tuesday claiming that the full-back enjoyed “statistically, the best left-back performance in Europe”.

Masuaku laid on an exceptional assist for Sebastian Haller as the Hammers won 2-0 at the London Stadium.

Per WhoScored, he touched the ball 79 times, registered a pass completion rate of 92%, completed two dribbles and won six tackles, while he was never dispossessed.

The 25-year-old was not in the squad for the opening game of the club’s season, a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City, but he has played in each of the subsequent three games and the Irons have not lost any of them, drawing 1-1 with Brighton & Hove Albion and beating both Watford and the Canaries.

And a number of supporters have praised the left-back following another sterling showing.

Arsenal fans divided over Granit Xhaka following victory on the opening weekend

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal opened their Premier League account with a routine 1-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday afternoon as a solitary strike from Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang was enough for the Gunners.

Unai Emery chose to make Granit Xhaka skipper during the game as he made his 100th Premier League appearance in Arsenal colours. Following the departure of club captain Laurent Koscielny, it appears as though the Swiss is next in line to replace him in that role.

However, after his performance in midfield at St James’ Park it left much of the Arsenal fanbase incredibly divided over his efforts.

Some praised the Switzerland international as one said if Xhaka wasn’t playing it would have been a loss for the north London outfit. Another fan said he was superb with his positioning.

Yet other supporters decided to lay into the 26-year-old. One individual claimed the Premier League wasn’t for him as he was branded the main negative from the match.

The debate led to one tweeter seemingly baffled at some of the hate the 6 foot man gets.

Xhaka finished the match with a pass completion rate of 84.5% whilst picking up a customary yellow card. He also won two aerial duels and made three tackles, per WhoScored.

Everton fans discuss Henry Onyekuru’s imminent departure for Monaco

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the news that Henry Onyekuru is set for a move to Monaco, as reported by L’Equipe.

The Nigerian striker signed for the Toffees back in the summer of 2017 for a £7m fee, but he has never made a single appearance for the Merseysiders after having issues with obtaining a work permit.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

The 22-year-old has since spent time on loan at Anderlecht and Galatasaray, scoring 16 goals for the latter last term.

Due to the fact that the 5 foot 9 forward is still having work permit problems, the Toffees look to have made the decision to sell the former Eupen man to Monaco for a reported sum of €15m (£13.7m) as it seems unlikely that he will ever get the chance to play for the Merseysiders.

He will reportedly commit to a long-term contract with the Ligue 1 side.

Let’s take a look at how the Everton fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

Newcastle have been quite busy this summer and their final addition to the team might just be the most surprising one yet.

The Magpies have now officially confirmed the big return of Andy Carroll to St. James’ Park on transfer deadline day and the 30-year-old forward has signed an initial one-year deal with the club.

Of course, Carroll is no stranger to the Toon Army as he has already spent some time with Newcastle in his career between 2008 and 2011.

Spurs fans back Walker-Peters to enjoy breakthrough year

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have backed Kyle Walker-Peters to enjoy a breakthrough season in 2019/20.

The right-back played just six times in the Premier League last season, completing the 90 minutes on four occasions; against AFC Bournemouth, Southampton, Huddersfield Town and Everton on the final day.

The game against Bournemouth saw Walker-Peters register three assists in total as he gave an example of the quality he possesses, but he did not play his first game for the club in 2018/19 until December, featuring for 12 minutes in the 2-0 win over Leicester City.

Walker-Peters also played 61 minutes against Barcelona in the Champions League as Spurs drew 1-1 at the Camp Nou to seal their progression into the knockout stages.

And fans are confident that the 22-year-old could enjoy a standout season in 2019/20, as he looks to jump ahead of both Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier in manager Mauricio Pochettino’s pecking order in north London.
