Glamorgan lose injured Nannes

Dirk Nannes, the former Australia fast bowler, has pulled out of a planned spell as one of Glamorgan’s overseas players for the Friends Life t20

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-2013Dirk Nannes, the former Australia fast bowler, has pulled out of a planned spell as one of Glamorgan’s overseas players for the Friends Life t20 after suffering a stress fracture in his back while playing in the IPL.Nannes, 37 and a T20 specialist these days, is second only to Alfonso Thomas as one of the leading wicket-takers in the format. He was set to join Marcus North, also a former Australia international and Glamorgan’s limited-overs captain, at the Welsh county but was injured during his stint at the IPL with Chennai Super Kings, for whom he took four wickets in five appearances.”We were disappointed to hear that Dirk will not be able to join us this season – he is a quality bowler and would have been a valuable addition to our squad,” Glamorgan’s head of elite performance, Matthew Mott, said. “We are now considering different replacement options and have already spoken to a number of players.”Glamorgan would have been Nannes’ fourth county, after previously appearing in the T20 tournament for Middlesex, Nottinghamshire and Surrey.

GT leave out Rabada and bowl against unchanged MI

The visitors brought in Arshad Khan in place of Washington Sundar in the only change

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-2025Gujarat Titans (GT) won the toss at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and decided to do what teams do there: field first against Mumbai Indians (MI). No total is safe at Wankhede, given a true pitch, small boundaries and dew later in the night.GT made one change to their team, bringing in left-arm quick Arshad Khan ahead of allrounder Washington Sundar. Once again, GT were playing Rashid Khan at No. 7, which presents an opportunity for the opposition that can take early wickets. Shubman Gill said they wanted to give Kagiso Rabada a couple more net sessions before they drafted him back into the XI.MI remained unchanged, which meant Corbin Bosch continued to play in place of Mitchell Santner, whom he originally replaced thanks to a niggle. Santner was not on the list of possible Impact Players, so it is possible he hasn’t yet fully recovered. Both teams are on 14 points and within a shot of the top position, but GT have a game in hand. This game is crucial for both sides with an eye on the top-two finish, which can guarantee a team two matches in the playoffs.Mumbai Indians 1 Ryan Rickelton (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Will Jacks, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Hardik Pandya (capt.), 7 Naman Dhir, 8 Corbin Bosch, 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Jasprit BumrahImpact Players bench Karn Sharma, Reece Topley, Robin Minz, Raj Bawa, Ashwani KumarGujarat Titans 1 Shubman Gill (capt.), 2 B Sai Sudharsan, 3 Jos Buttler (wk), 4 M Shahrukh Khan, 5 Rahul Tewatia, 6 R Sai Kishore, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Arshad Khan, 9 Gerald Coetzee, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Prasidh KrishnaImpact Players bench Sherfane Rutherford, Washington Sundar, Anuj Rawat, Mahipal Lomror, Dasun Shanaka

SA bowlers pose tough challenge to Pakistan

To beat South Africa, opposition teams need to hone in on one thing: the world No.1 side’s bowlers

Firdose Moonda29-Jan-2013To beat South Africa, opposition teams need to hone in on one thing: the world No.1 side’s bowlers.”The big battle between any team coming up against the current South African one will be between their batsmen against the South African bowlers,” Vincent Barnes, manager of the high performance centre, who was in charge of the South African Invitation side that played against the touring Pakistanis, told ESPNCricinfo. “If you can tame the bowlers, you can get close but if you can’t, you will get a hiding.”On the evidence of the tour match, which few read into, Pakistan’s batsmen have some work to do. Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez did well in both innings but of the middle order only Misbah-ul-Haq scored a half-century.”It looked like they were just trying to occupy the crease and then some of them got good balls and got out,” Barnes said. “We can’t judge too much on that. Guys like Azhar Ali and Younis Khan have scored big runs in the past. Jamshed looks like a guy whose natural game is to play his shots and Hafeez is a quality player who scores both sides of the wicket.”While the batsmen will be the ones under scrutiny, some may see the real contest as a battle between bowling attacks as Pakistan’s has a lot to offer. Barnes regards Umar Gul as their “best bowler who is very skilful” and Saeed Ajmal as the “key factor” to their chances of success. He also saw first-hand the two bowlers who will be relatively unknown quantities to South Africa – Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan. Left-armer Junaid swings the ball both ways while Irfan, at more than two metres tall, is expected to extract steep bounce. “Junaid drifted in an out a bit. He had some good spells and some average ones,” Barnes said. “Irfan is definitely a massive presence. Bounce will be his strength but he struggled with his lengths and didn’t seem to swing the ball much.”Irfan’s Test debut is the most widely talked about point in the lead up to the series. While Jacques Kallis joked that some of the South African bowlers will go to practice on stilts, he does not actually seem too fazed about the prospect of facing him.”Morne Morkel is not too much shorter than that so we are used to facing quite a bit of bounce. It will be slightly different but nothing we haven’t seen before,” he said. “There is so much video analysis around. I suppose it takes a few balls to get used to facing them but once you’ve seen them on video, you get an idea.” Morkel, at around 1.9 metres tall, has been known to prosper on the more lively pitches on the Highveld and Irfan will hope to do the same in the Tests at Johannesburg and Centurion. But it is not bounce or swing that Hashim Amla thinks will make the difference in the series. Precision and discipline are the traits he rates highest in his home conditions. “I’ve always felt that in South African conditions, it’s usually the guys that are not necessarily quick but quite accurate who do well. Vernon is an example of that,” he said.”I think they’ve got a good bowling attack and what helps the sub-continent teams is that they usually bowl on flat tracks. So when they do come to a wicket that does assist them they have the discipline.”Local conditions are also what Kallis hopes will give South Africa’s bowlers the upperhand in the contest between the pace packs. “They’ve got some good quality batters that have been around a long time but what we have in our favour is that they are not used to our conditions. They will be tested with the short ball,” he warned. Other sub-continent teams have been told the same but Pakistan are the team that have prospered most. They will hope to continue that run.

Watson wants to open on Test return

Shane Watson has bluntly stated his intention to win back his Test match opening spot, irrespective of the promising union formed by David Warner and Ed Cowan in the Australian vice-captain’s absence from the XI

Daniel Brettig15-Feb-2012Shane Watson has bluntly stated his intention to win back his Test match opening spot, irrespective of the promising union formed by David Warner and Ed Cowan in his absence. Before he departed Sydney to return to first-class cricket for New South Wales against Western Australia in a Sheffield Shield match at the WACA, Watson said he would be opening the batting for the Blues as a precursor to his bid to regain that spot for the national team. While an extended injury break due to hamstring and calf problems has made Watson mindful of managing his workload this time around, the prospect of moving down the order appeared a long way from his mind.”At the moment I’m going to open the batting [in Perth],” Watson said. “I’d love to be able to open [for Australia], but that’s where I’ve had the most enjoyment as a batsman and that’s where I’ve had the most enjoyment as a batsman, that’s where my game really progressed from, with the opportunity to open the batting. That’s really where I’d love to be able to bat, no doubt.”Ed Cowan, in Test cricket especially, and Dave Warner have done a pretty good job there. It’s going to be interesting to see where things pan out but I certainly do love opening, because that’s where I’ve had most success in my international career.”The absence of Watson, the vice-captain, coincided with a rich vein of form for the Test team under Michael Clarke’s leadership, and whenever he returns, either towards the end of the triangular ODI series or in the West Indies, it will be to a vastly different dressing room from the one he left. However, Watson’s primary concern will be to find the ideal balance between his muscular batting and shrewd swing and seam bowling, something he admitted did not “exactly work” in the months leading up to his injury.”I’ll have to keep an eye on that, definitely,” Watson said. “That’s something I’ve looked at in detail over the last few months, exactly how I’m going to be able to balance what I’m trying to do and keeping my body as good as it can as well throughout the period of playing a lot of cricket.”There’s no doubt playing consistently for four months, which I did throughout that period, it just ended up my body wasn’t agreeing with what I was trying to do with it. In the end it’s meant a lot of other things have been able to regenerate and I’ve been able to reassess where I was at and the things that didn’t go exactly to plan throughout that four-month period of playing consistently – a few mistakes that I did make throughout that period of time, I certainly won’t be making them again because I wouldn’t really like to be out for another three months again because it’s very frustrating.”So I’m going to have to continue to talk to Michael and Mickey Arthur and just try and balance my workload as much as I possibly can because what happened over the last little while didn’t exactly work so I’m just going to have to stay on top of things a little bit more, I think.”Joining Watson in Perth for the Shield match starting on Friday is the Test wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, who remains surplus to the requirements of the limited-overs team despite having earlier been informed that he was being rested for the first three matches. Watson said he felt Haddin had been left “in limbo”, though the wicketkeeper himself seems more comfortable with where things stand.”I actually feel sorry for Brad at the moment,” Watson said. “He’s been left in a bit of limbo unfortunately. He doesn’t know which way he’s going, whether he’s been rested or being dropped. I really do feel sorry for him because someone who’s played an important role over the last five years in all forms of the game for Australia.”I think [he] definitely deserves to be told either way what his future holds, because I know if I was in the same position I’d be pretty disappointed if you’re being left in limbo a little bit. I think they should tell him either way and that’s for Test cricket also. It’s important for him just to be able to know which direction he is going.”I’ve been in different situations when [in] selection you don’t know exactly what’s going on. But for someone who’s been a big part and been the vice-captain for Australia on a number of occasions as well, I think that’s what he deserves.”

Tigers sneak past Bushrangers

Xavier Doherty and James Faulkner played critical roles as Tasmania held out for a two-run victory over Victoria in the domestic limited overs match in Hobart.Chasing 223 for victory after Faulkner and Jason Krejza bolstered the Tigers’ total with an industrious stand of 57 in the final six overs, the Bushrangers always seemed destined to fall short as a succession of batsmen were unable to go on from starts.Ultimately Jayde Herrick was required to strike Doherty’s final ball for four in order to win, but could only bunt a single as the hosts survived. Victoria are now without a win in three one day matches this season.Like Doherty a recent arrival home from South Africa, James Pattinson’s late innings of 35, including two sixes, had given the Bushrangers faint hope before he was run out on the third ball of the final over.Faulkner and Doherty shared the top four Victorian wickets on a chilly night in Hobart, while Ben Hilfenhaus bowled with swing and considerable pace despite going wicketless.Tasmania’s earlier progress with the bat was uncertain, despite a sturdy 71 from Nick Kruger. The Bushrangers’ spinners Glenn Maxwell and Jon Holland kept a tight rein on the scoring until Faulkner and Krejza lifted the total to reasonable dimensions.

Rankin eyes England spot

Boyd Rankin, the Warwickshire and Ireland fast bowler, has set his sights on joining former team-mate Eoin Morgan in the England side even though that will mean turning his back on his homeland.Rankin was drafted into the England Lions squad for the final one-day match against Sri Lanka A, at Wantage Road, and responded with 2 for 19 as the hosts wrapped up the series 2-1. Ironically, however, his next major chance to impress England will come when he is in opposition to them in the one-day international at Clontarf next week.”I want to play at the highest level and be the best I can be. I still feel I’m getting better and better and if the chance came I would probably take it,” Rankin told the . “The ultimate goal is to play Test cricket and I don’t know if the [England] one-day team is the route to the Test team. It won’t happen for a while anyway but it’s just a matter of trying to get my foot into the Lions and do well with them and get on the winter programme.”Rankin has taken 44 wickets for Warwickshire in the County Championship and a productive season has helped him move on from the frustration of injuries which hampered his preparation for the World Cup earlier this year. Now he’s aiming for a strong finish to the summer before seeing what is in store during the winter.”I’ve got over my injury worries, I feel, and I just want to kick on for the rest of the season with a number of games with Warwickshire,” he said. “We have all the top coaches and facilities over here and I want to make use of it and see what happens here.”And a few wickets against England wouldn’t go amiss. “They will come out hard because we beat them the last time we met and it’s good we are playing in Dublin in front of a home crowd,” he said. “I hope it’s a good day and we get another good result and I hope I get a few wickets.”
