Times Internet bags IPL media rights

Times Internet Limited has been awarded the media rights for the IPL’s global internet, mobile and radio rights, along with the television rights for certain territories

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Mar-2011Times Internet Limited, part of the Times of India group, has been awarded the media rights for the IPL’s global internet, mobile and radio rights, along with the television rights for certain territories. According to the IPL governing council, the winning bid was Rs. 261.6 crore (approx $58 million) for the four-year period 2011-14.The bids were opened in the presence of Justice Mukul Mudgal, a former High Court Chief Justice, under the orders of the Supreme Court, which required the bids to be opened in front of an independent observer because of the ongoing dispute between the BCCI and sport marketing agency, World Sport Group (WSG).Under the terms of the order, any money the BCCI receives from Times Internet is to be kept in an escrow account, and the board can only withdraw amounts equivalent to those which it would have received from WSG under the existing contract as if their agreement had not been terminated. The bids will also not be final until the dispute between the two is resolved.Although WSG had asked the Supreme Court to prevent the tender from being issued, it still welcomed the March 18 order. “In effect, the order protects our long-term rights and that of our partners, and also our revenues pending the final legal outcome of the case, and that is what we had sought to preserve,” Seamus O’Brien, chairman and chief executive, WSG, said in a statement sent to ESPNcricinfo. The statement also reiterated that the agency will take whatever further actions are necessary around the world, “and particularly in key markets to protect its rights and interests, and that of its licensees who have invested in the success of the IPL, as a result of the illegal termination of its agreements by the BCCI, and their subsequent actions.”The BCCI have also appealed the Bombay High Court’s February 23 ruling that issued a stay on the termination of the WSG contract, but the appeal was not admitted by the Supreme Court at Friday’s hearing, and a date has been set in four weeks time. The 2011 IPL kicks off on April 8 when reigning champions, Chennai Super Kings, host the Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai. The television rights for the Indian subcontinent, held by SET MAX, as well as certain other territories, were not part of the tender offer.

Misbah rides on higher confidence

It is difficult to believe both that, at 36, Misbah-ul-Haq hasn’t played a World Cup before and that he is playing this one at all

Osman Samiuddin in Colombo24-Feb-2011It is difficult to believe both that, at 36, Misbah-ul-Haq hasn’t played a World Cup before and that he is playing this one at all. Such was the force of his last axing, from all three formats no less, that until circumstances thrust him into the Test captaincy last October, his career was all but over.Yet as the premier domestic batsman in Pakistan in the 2000s, many felt he had been treated unfairly in not being given at least one opportunity between 2003 and 2007; with Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan in the middle order during that period, however, it was difficult to see how he would get in.But, like the best actors and boxers, he does comebacks exceedingly well. In 2007, after a four-year exile, he nearly won Pakistan a world title. In this latest return he has been even more remarkable; 65 against Kenya in Hambantota was his ninth international fifty in 12 innings across Tests and ODIs.The player, he said during Pakistan’s practice at the Premadasa in Colombo, does not change. “I’ve always said it is important for any player to get some self-belief and confidence back. You start scoring runs, the team starts believing in you and people’s expectations of you increase andthat gives you self-belief. And as your confidence builds your performance gets better. The player actually remains the same before and after, but with confidence higher, you perform better.”Had poker been an official pursuit in Pakistan, his face would’ve won him titles, so expecting him to express regret, or anger, or even blink twice, at being asked about missing past World Cups is futile. He is happy, he says, just to be playing at all. “I think whatever cricket you play you should think about that. I am enjoying it at the moment, I have always enjoyed playing it, domestically or internationally and I only want to do what I can for the side.”Misbah’s return has fitted in seamlessly with a gradual upswing in Pakistan’s batting results over the last year or so, an under-scrutinised aspect of their performances. In 20 ODIs in Sri Lanka, England, the UAE and New Zealand, Pakistan have made 250 or more 13 times. Each member of the top six has made contributions at various stages, so that the problem has been one of plenty, of pacing an innings, of arranging the order so that momentum is not squandered and stabilityalways present.Misbah has come, as he did on Wednesday, mostly at five and has batted often in tandem with Younis Khan. Though the poor start then highlighted the calm the pair brings, against a better attack more oomph might be needed through the middle, an Umar Akmal breaking up the pair. Some in Pakistan, Imran Khan no less, want Misbah even higher in the order.”The situation as it is, with the way the batting order is, all our batsmen have scored runs,” Misbah said. “Kamran [Akmal] comes in at three and he has opened, Younis at four who has mostly played at three, the openers did well scoring hundreds in New Zealand, so we’re not really feeling that our batting is missing something. We’ve got guys scoring runs and performing. Our batting order is fine and it is a good combination at the moment. Whatever the team needs, will happen. None of the players have any issues with where they are batting and what number.”Few attacks can match Sri Lanka’s for potency or variety so Saturday, in what is likely to be an electric atmosphere, will be a comprehensive test of Pakistan. “Sri Lanka always, but especially in the last 2-3 years they have been very consistent, playing good cricket and in home conditions they are a very tough side,” Misbah said.”To get a good first win in this kind of tournament, with most of your batsmen scoring runs and then convincingly get them out, the morale gets high and players get into touch. It is a very vital match for both sides.”

West Ham backed to move for Emmanuel Dennis

BBC pundit Carlton Palmer has tipped West Ham to register an interest in Watford forward Emmanuel Dennis this summer, if the Hornets are relegated at the end of the season.

The Lowdown: Standout performer

Roy Hodgson’s team are currently second from bottom in the Premier League table and look all but certain to be going down to the Championship following their 2-1 defeat against Burnley on Saturday.

Despite the Hornets having a disappointing campaign, Dennis has been a standout performer in a struggling side, having delivered some impressive individual performances, reaching double figures for top-flight goals in his debut season in England.

Former Premier League midfielder Palmer believes that several top-flight clubs will be monitoring the 24-year-old if Watford’s inevitable relegation is confirmed in the coming weeks.

The Latest: Palmer’s thoughts on Dennis

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the ex-England international admitted that he expects West Ham to be among the clubs making a move for the striker over the summer.

Palmer said: “If Watford go down, then there’ll be quite a few players that a lot of clubs will be interested in. Emmanuel Dennis will be one of those that I’d have thought that a lot of Premier League clubs will be looking for.

“Their better players are going to be looked at by clubs like West Ham, and by clubs in the top six.”

The Verdict: Ideal Antonio alternative

The five-cap Nigeria international has racked up 16 goal contributions in 34 outings across all competitions for the Hornets this term, via Transfermarkt. For someone who has been so prolific in the final third, he could prove to be the perfect strike partner for Michail Antonio at West Ham.

The £7.2m-rated star, who was described as an “intelligent” player by ex-Watford marksman Odion Ighalo in February, can play on both flanks and could provide David Moyes with a much-needed alternative to lead the line, with no recognised backup to Antonio at the London Stadium.

This additional squad depth would only be seen as a positive for the Irons, and should they decide to move for Dennis in the upcoming transfer window, his attacking prowess could help them in their bid to secure European football again next season.

'This isn't a warm-up game' – Johan Botha

Johan Botha, who will take over as Twenty20 captain from Graeme Smith, is not taking Zimbabwe lightly

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Oct-2010South Africa’s Twenty20 game against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein marks the start of the international cricket season in the country and captain Johan Botha, who will take over as Twenty20 leader from Graeme Smith, is not taking his opponents lightly. Friday’s contest will be the first Twenty20 fixture between the two teams. Zimbabwe have won just three of their 12 Twenty20 internationals thus far, the biggest scalp being the victory against Australia in the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007.”We’re definitely taking Zimbabwe seriously. It’s officially the start of our summer and this is no warm-up game,” Botha said on the eve of the match. “They’re an international side and have beaten some big teams in the past, so we’ll still have to play pretty well.”When teams are regarded as underdogs, they are dangerous. If one guy gets 80 off 50 balls or if one of their bowlers takes three or four wickets, it puts us under pressure.”Botha has led South Africa in eight ODIs and five Twenty20 internationals. Graeme Smith’s decision to step down from Twenty20 captaincy in August paved the way for Botha to assume the role on a full-time basis, and both will feature in Friday’s contest. “Graeme obviously has a lot of experience and it’s nice to have someone like that in your team,” Botha said. “If things get tough, he’s always available for me, so as far as I’m concerned it’s a good thing he didn’t just stop and go away.”As captain, I’ll just try to be myself, do things on the field as I see it and hopefully make the right decisions. In T20 cricket, you want to stay one step ahead, so that’s what I’ll try and do.”The teams play two Twenty20 internationals and three ODIs in the series.

Liverpool must complete Arda Guler transfer

Liverpool have a decent number of young players in their squad across different positions on the pitch such as Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate and Caoimhin Kelleher, among others.

However, their youngest senior squad member is 19-year-old Harvey Elliott, who the Reds signed from Fulham in the 2019 summer transfer window.

Since then, the teenager has gone on to make 40 appearances for Liverpool’s senior and youth teams combined, scoring five goals and providing 12 assists in the process.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

With an average of 1.4 shots and 1.2 key passes per game in the Premier League this season, this shows what a creative and attacking talent the Liverpool youngster is for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Moving forward, it seems that the Merseyside club have their eye on snapping up another teenage prodigy to add to their ranks as a potential future star.

According to a recent report from Turkish media outlet Fanatik (via TEAMtalk), Liverpool and fellow Premier League giants Arsenal are keeping tabs on Fenerbahce starlet Arda Guler.

Since joining the Istanbul club’s youth ranks in 2019, the 17-year-old attacking midfielder has made 42 appearances across their senior and youth teams, delivering a combined total of 27 goals and assists.

With eight senior league appearances to his name this season, the teenager has earned himself a performance rating of 6.98/10, making him the third-highest rated player in Fenerbahce’s squad according to WhoScored. This shows just how capable the youngster is at playing regular senior football at such a young age.

Labelled a “special” player by youth coach Erol Tokgozler, Guler certainly has what it takes to follow in the footsteps of Elliott and become a potential first-team figure for the Reds.

With that in mind, this could give FSG the chance to replicate the same sort of transfer masterclass they pulled off when they secured a deal for the former Fulham starlet three years ago.

If Fenerbahce’s teenage prodigy ends the season with a few more impressive performances and more goal contributions, Liverpool and FSG should definitely have a move for Guler in their sights by the time the summer transfer window opens for business.

Australia, New Zealand angered by Howard rejection

The Australian and New Zealand chairmen are united in their anger at not being given a reason for John Howard’s scratching as ICC vice-president

Peter English30-Jun-2010The Australian and New Zealand chairmen are united in their anger at not being given a reason for John Howard’s scratching as ICC vice-president and embarrassed that such a decorated candidate has been refused. New Zealand Cricket’s Alan Isaac and Cricket Australia’s Jack Clarke were “gutted” after being asked by the board to nominate another option by August.”It’s incredibly disappointing that a man of John Howard’s stature has been knocked off from this job,” Clarke said from Singapore. “A person who has been such an eminent person and who has been through the most exhaustive process ever to get this job.”The opposition to Howard, who needed seven votes from the 10 major nations, began formally with a letter signed by six board members on Tuesday night. Resistance to the idea was so strong there was no point in having a ballot.”There were no reasons given and that’s part of the frustration Jack and I have in this whole process,” Isaac said. “[There has been] lots of discussion but we’re unable to ascertain a reason for the lack of support for our nomination. It’s just not acceptable.”Howard, who was pursued by Cricket Australia to nominate for the position, was “extremely upset” when told of the veto. “When you put up someone through a process, someone as eminent as John, I don’t think embarrassed is strong enough [to describe the way you feel],” Clarke said. “Just gutted that the ICC has ignored the chance.”A disappointed Howard admitted his political past could have been the problem. “Even in private discussions they are very reluctant to give a particular reason,” Howard told Australia’s Sky News. “It’s a very unusual situation… I’m disappointed at the outcome. I wanted to do this job. I thought I could do it well and I would have devoted my full time to it.”Both Isaac and Clarke addressed the executive board during meetings over the past two days, with Clarke telling the members that Howard could not have been prime minister of Australia for 11 years without having ability. The pleas were ignored and the decision has exposed the reopening of a gulf between the Australia-New Zealand-England group and the Asia-Africa alliance.Opposition to Howard’s appointment began with his recommendation in March, with supporters of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka early critics of the move before South Africa and India provided their influential support. Howard was a critic of Robert Mugabe’s regime and refused to let Australia go there in 2007, while in 2004 he called Muttiah Muralitharan a chucker. There was also a backlash in New Zealand after their candidate Sir John Anderson was overlooked for “a non-cricket person”. An independent committee had been required to break the deadlock between Howard and Anderson, the two boards’ preferred options.Anderson has not been spoken to about replacing Howard and Isaac had no idea whether he would be interested. Despite the failure to advance Howard, Isaac remained comfortable with the selection.”Both of the candidates were very able,” Isaac said. “The recommendation for Howard was on his experience,” he said. “John Howard also had the time [to do the job], which was one of the issues the nomination committee had with John Anderson.”Isaac and Clarke are adamant the appointment process, which is under its fourth design since 1992, followed the ICC constitution. A region-based, rotational method was introduced to avoid these types of issues.”If you keep having processes that don’t work or aren’t allowed to work, I’m not sure how they go from there,” Clarke said. “I’ll have to go back to my board who will be pretty angry, very angry. Alan will need to go back to his board and then we’ll need to get together and work out where we go from there.”There are no threats of boycotting meetings, holding grudges through Future Tour Programme planning or refusing to re-nominate a candidate. But when asked if anything had occurred at ICC board level that was more insulting to Australia and New Zealand, Clarke replied: “This has got to be in the grand final.”

Journalist makes Trossard to West Ham claim

Taking to Twitter, journalist Pete O’Rourke has broken a Sunday morning West Ham transfer development involving Brighton forward Leandro Trossard.

The Lowdown: West Ham attacker hunt…

Manager David Moyes is on the look-out for a new forward as the final hours of January loom, with the Hammers having until 11pm on Monday to finally bring an attacker through the door at Rush Green.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-copy/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They are apparently in talks for Reims ace Hugo Ekitike and have been very recently linked with a few others out of France, including Senegal international Bamba Dieng or Marseille.

However, breaking news this morning, O’Rourke says they’ve now made a ‘shock’ approach.

The Latest: West Ham make Trossard approach…

According to his sources, West Ham have ‘made a shock enquiry’ for Seagulls attacker Trossard as Moyes and recruitment chief Rob Newman seemingly cast their net of targets wider and wider.

“Understand West Ham have made a shock enquiry for Brighton attacker Leandro Trossard.” he explained on Twitter.

The Verdict: Right move?

The Belgium international, currently in the prime of his career, has only scored 14 goals over his 87 Premier League appearances at the Amex since signing from KRC Genk in 2019.

Numbers like these don’t exactly point to a prolific option in the forward positions and we believe other targets, like the much younger Ekitike, should be made a priority over the 27-year-old.

Valued at around £15.3m by Transfermarkt, it is very debatable whether West Ham should be matching a figure in and around that amount for Trossard.
