Leeds journalist Beren Cross raves over youngster Jack Jenkins

Leeds journalist Beren Cross has delivered fine praise in the direction of teenager Jack Jenkins after his display for the U23s on Monday evening.

Cross was giving his player ratings after the Whites thrashed Bolton 5-1.

What’s he said?

Carlos Corberan’s team were in mighty fine form at the beginning of the week as a mix of youth and more experienced players took to the field against the Trotters.

Eddie Nketiah started up front and scored twice while Gjanni Alioski also featured and got on the scoresheet.

Jack Clarke was back in the goals too, but it was one of the players in the middle of the park that convinced the most.

It wasn’t Mateusz Bogusz or Alfie McCalmont but instead, it was Jenkins who kept things ticking over.

He earned a match rating of 7 and the following review:

“Overshadowed McCalmont on the night with his midfield display during the first half and then went to right-back in the second period. Quieter there, but another of the under-18s who is well established now.”

Big potential

The 18-year-old recently earned a new deal at the back end of November and it appears as though that has spurred him on in terms of his performances.

Jenkins hasn’t yet featured for the first team but it says a lot about his potential that he’s overshadowing McCalmont, a player that’s featured on two occasions for Leeds’ first-team this term.

Not only that, but the Northern Irishman has even featured for his country at senior level in 2019/20.

It bodes particularly well that Jenkins is making such tremendous strides and the fact he’s a versatile individual should only help his cause in terms of making Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team plans.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

Normally a central midfielder, the way he slotted into right-back in the second period should stand him in good stead. Bielsa has relied on versatile players with great regularity this season, particularly with individuals like Stuart Dallas.

He’s another player to have featured both in midfield and in defence, alongside Alioski.

Jenkins currently has a contract until the summer of 2023 so he’s certainly someone to keep an eye on between now and then.

Meanwhile, one Leeds star has shown why promotion is anything but assured this season…

Liverpool fans wax lyrical about Van Dijk’s crucial goal for the Netherlands

[ad_pod ]

There is very little that Virgil van Dijk could do to prevent Liverpool fans from adoring him.

The club’s faithful have adopted the Dutch centre-back as one of their own following his switch from Southampton in January.

Van Dijk has proven to be a crucial member of Jurgen Klopp’s team and he has improved the defence significantly since taking charge of the back line.

Over the past two weeks, the centre-back has been on international duty with the Netherlands, and he made headlines on Monday night.

In the dying minutes of the Nations League clash between Germany and Holland, Van Dijk stepped up to score a goal that sent his country into the finals of the competition.

The tie was at 2-1 before the Liverpool star found the back of the net deep into injury time.

Spurs fans aren’t happy with the latest update on their new stadium

Tottenham Hotspur released a club statement on Monday regarding the latest developments surrounding the build of their new stadium, and Spurs fans on Twitter were generally not happy with the news.

Chairman Daniel Levy confirmed in the statement that the Premier League clash with Manchester City had been moved to Monday 29 October, the day after it was originally meant to be played, so that it could be held at Wembley Stadium rather than the new ground which may still not be ready.

Thanks to UEFA rules that state clubs must only play at one home ground, all three of the Lilywhites’ Champions League group stage matches against Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven and Inter Milan will all be held at Wembley.

Spurs fans on Twitter were disappointed with the further delays and some could no longer attend the game, although others did acknowledge that the club had reduced prices for the game against City and had finally begun to open up to supporters.

In Focus: Manchester United will have an extra attacking option in Soler

Manchester United are interested in signing Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler, according to The Independent.

What’s the story?

United manager Jose Mourinho is believed to be keen on bringing in a winger after missing out on signing Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic in the summer.

The Independent claims that 20-year-old Soler is on the Portuguese coach’s list, and even though he is still young, the Red Devils will be expected to pay in the region of £40m.

Andreas Pereira, who is currently on loan at the Spanish outfit, could reportedly be included in a player-plus-cash deal.

With the futures of certain players, including Marouane Fellaini, in doubt, Soler is likely to be added to the first-team squad.

How good is he?

A player at his age is usually pushing for first-team minutes rather than featuring regularly in a competitive side.

So far this season, Soler has made 11 La Liga appearances and has found the back of the net on one occasion.

The youngster, who can also play centrally in midfield, has created four assists in Spain’s top flight.

United have dropped eight points behind rivals Manchester City in the table, and even though they remain well positioned to challenge for the title, injuries have hampered them.

If Soler was to move to Old Trafford, his potential could be huge, but he may take time to settle and adapt to English football.

Three reasons Everton should target Man City star Nolito this summer

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Manchester City forward Nolito is said to be considering his future with the club because of a lack of playing time in recent months and he could look to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer.

The 30-year-old was signed by Pep Guardiola last July from Celta Vigo for a fee of £13.6m and he is only one year into a four-year deal, but he could already be on his way out following a frustrating personal campaign – especially in recent months.

The Spaniard was a regular starter in the early stages of the season but despite making an impressive 31 appearances in all competitions for the two-time Premier League winners, the majority of those outings have come from the substitutes’ bench.

Toffees manager Ronald Koeman is keen to strengthen his attacking options this summer and he could do a lot worse than take a closer look at the Spain international.

Here are THREE reasons Everton should look to sign Nolito…

He can score and create

Britain Football Soccer – Manchester City v Celtic – UEFA Champions League Group Stage – Group C – Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England – 6/12/16 Manchester City’s Nolito in action with Celtic’s Craig Gordon Action Images via Reuters / Jason Cairnduff Livepic EDITORIAL USE ONLY.

With Europa League football to look forward to next season, Everton will need strength in depth in attacking areas and bringing in Nolito can help them in that regard.

Despite limited game time with City, the Spaniard has shown his potential by scoring six goals and providing a further five assists this season this term – as well as hitting double figures in three consecutive seasons before moving to England – and he certainly has the ability to bring something to the first team both in the Premier League and in Europe for the Toffees.

The Toffees need new forwards

With the future of Romelu Lukaku uncertain, Arouna Kone already being announced as leaving the club at the end of the season following the expiry of his contract and Enner Valencia likely to return to West Ham United following a loan spell, Ronald Koeman needs new forwards this summer.

The Dutchman certainly would have been impressed by the performances of Nolito earlier in the campaign and despite a lack of playing time recently, he will know that the player can make a difference if he did move to Goodison Park.

He is versatile

The 30-year-old is able to play anywhere across the frontline and that versatility will make him an attractive proposition for Koeman and Everton should the forward leave City and choose to remain in England.

Naturally left-footed, the Spaniard could give the Toffees a different attacking dimension and be able to provide Romelu Lukaku – if he stays – with the support in the final third that he has missed at times this season when he has been left isolated up top.

Do you agree, Toffees fans? Let us know below.

Could the timing be right for Wenger to take charge of England?

What a difference 67 days make, after the incredible developments of the last few days the England national team once again finds itself without a permanent manager at the helm. The FA have to begin their search to find the next man to take charge of the Three Lions, and although Gareth Southgate has been trusted with the task for the next four matches, the question now is who will be the next man in the England hot seat?

Southgate now has, in effect, a four-match job interview which will finish in November when England face Spain in an international friendly. By then you would imagine that the FA will have made that all important decision as to whether Southgate gets the job full time or whether or not they decide to give the position to someone else.

And that someone else could be none other than current Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. Before the appointment of Allardyce, Football Association Chairman Greg Clarke made no secret of his desire to try and tempt Wenger away from the Emirates Stadium and into the realm of international football, but the Frenchman, with still a year left to run on his contract, was not prepared to walk away early. Yet, if you were to ask the 66-year-old the same question at the end of the season then the answer may have changed.

In terms of the runners and riders for the England job, not much has changed from June when Roy Hodgson’s tenure ended after that embarrassing defeat to Iceland at EURO 2016. It’s still the same half dozen or so names who will once again be in the frame, and if truth be told it isn’t an inspiring list. Alan Pardew and Steve Bruce haven’t got the most glittering of CV’s when it comes to top level management, after all.

But if you were to add a name like Wenger’s to the list of candidates then it’s not unfair to say that the three-time Premier League winner would go straight to the top of the pile. Of course, there are a number of mitigating circumstances and the most obvious one would be whether or not the former Monaco manager would actually want to take the job, but it could almost be the perfect time for him to bow out from Arsenal and try his hand at winning a major international trophy.

International football management has long been the pursuit of the elder statesmen of the game and after being in charge of Arsenal through the breakneck pace of the Premier League for 20 years it would make perfect sense to take up an opportunity such as being England manager.

Wenger will have a job at Arsenal for life, should he want it, and even if he really did want the England job then you could quite easily envisage him, in a sense, taking a sabbatical from the London club to return as a Director of Football, later on. Dare I say it, he could even combine that with England duties due to not having the need of managing from week-to-week.

This is a man who knows English football inside out and if you look past what some may consider a stumbling block of him being non-English then he is without question the perfect candidate for the role. Southgate is quite capable of keeping the seat warm until June.

Let’s not forget that Southgate himself said he wasn’t ready to take the job when Roy Hodgson quit, but whether that mindset has changed remains to be seen.

Arsenal fans will now have a keen eye on the contract developments of Wenger over the next few months, as the longer he goes without signing the likelier a move to international management may become. Maybe this May really will be the end of an era for the Gunners and a start of a new one for England.

As we’ve seen a lot can happen in football in just the space of a day, even more, can happen over the space of a few months. Will Arsene say ‘au revoir’ to Arsenal and ‘bonjour’ to Wembley? Only time will tell.
