David Morgan, the ICC president, has said he is not in favour of a World Cup ban for the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi, adding that the tournament would be “poorer” without matches being hosted in India’s capital city. However, he said the “appropriate” decision on the Kotla pitch issue would be taken by experts. The ICC match referee Alan Hurst is reported to have classified the Kotla pitch used in the abandoned fixture between India and Sri Lanka last month as “unfit”, the harshest possible assessment. This has raised fears of a possible ban that could extend up to the World Cup, scheduled to be held in the subcontinent in early 2011.”I’m not at all sure if such a ban would be appropriate in this case,” Morgan told the Indian news channel NDTV. “It’s not our desire that a pitch in an important city from a cricketing point of view, a place like Delhi, should face a lengthy ban.”The ICC has written to the BCCI. The World Cup would be the poorer without matches being hosted in New Delhi. But you can be sure that an appropriate decision would be made by two expert people on the subject.”The BCCI has two weeks to respond to Hurst’s report, which was submitted on December 29; its reply, in addition to the report, video footage of the abandoned game and other significant documents, will be studied by the ICC’s chief referee Ranjan Madugalle and its cricket operations manager Dave Richardson, who will determine the penalty.

'Yesterday's man' Chingoka breaks silence

Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Peter Chingoka has finally emerged from months of virtual invisibility to give an interview to Zimbabwe’s Independent newspaper.Chingoka has maintained a low-profile since he was barred from attending an ICC meeting in January because the Australian authorities decided his connections with the Mugabe regime made him an undesirable alien. That followed similar action by the European Union in 2008. In his place, chief executive Ozias Bvute has been the public face of ZC.Locally, critics of Chingoka believe that he is keen to avoid publicity because of the increasing scrutiny of the activities of the board by MDC minister David Coultard. They wryly add that since Chingoka has all but disappeared, Zimbabwe have made massive steps forward. “He’s yesterday’s man,” one former administrator told Cricinfo. “He is associated internally and abroad with the dark days of the game here and his time is thankfully drawing to a close.”Chingoka brushed aside such suggestions, insisting that his silence was because he had “fewer requests for interviews now than I had in the past, and so it appears as if I have been out of the limelight”. He added: “I have been doing three things: continuing to run the sport and getting more time for my business and also my personal life.”What has changed is the game inside Zimbabwe, with many players who fell out with his board returning to the fold. “You may remember us saying all along that our doors are always open and that our objective has always been to make sure that the game is accessible to all Zimbabweans regardless of race, creed or gender. Thus, since the disputes stemming back to 2004, we have had players, former administrators and coaches returning, at different intervals, to offer their services again.”What we have now is what we have always had, which is a positive spirit.”In a sign that there may be more openness than in the recent past, Chingoka was asked if the developments and changes in ZC are meant to repair the damages of your administration? “The ZC board has always insisted on an open door policy,” he replied, “and has, at all times, welcomed and utilised to the benefit of the game the best people who have walked through that door.”Turning to on-field affairs, Chingoka maintained the timescale set out by the ICC for Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket was “within two years from the meeting of March 2009, but that will be influenced by our results in the next few months”.If they do return then the old issues of games against England, Australia and New Zealand will resurface, but he was adamant there were no problems with the boards of those countries, only the governments. “Our relations with Cricket Australia for example have seen them helping us in our staff development in various spheres of the game. We have had players, coaches and staffers attending courses there. And what about continuing voices, albeit less vocal of late, who question Zimbabwe’s right to continue to be a Full Member of the ICC? “In so far as all the other Full Members are concerned, we have their unwavering support.”It’s worthy to note that Cricket South Africa is right now working on a blue-print following our visit to them and the reciprocal visit by their coordinating committee specifically chosen to help us return to Test cricket. The blueprint is being finalised now by their board and will attach special emphasis on our return to Test cricket at the shortest possible time. It will embrace facets of our cricket from age-groups through to the Test arena.”At the same time, we are also playing our part as an ICC Full Member by helping to upgrade standards in member countries such as Kenya and by sending our sides to age-group tournaments in South Africa where they play against other African countries. It is all part of world cricket wanting to have stronger playing countries. And we are not an island in that.”

Harbhajan ensures India's cup overflows

Two rapturous celebrations by Harbhajan Singh told the story this evening. The first was when he bowled Thilina Kandamby, the second when he sealed India’s first finals win in Sri Lanka this decade

Tonight, Harbhajan Singh got wickets when it mattered most. It was a long overdue performance.•AFP

Two rapturous celebrations by Harbhajan Singh told the story this evening. The first was when he bowled Thilina Kandamby, the second when he sealed India’s first finals win in Sri Lanka this decade.Even with seven wickets down, and the required rate touching 10 an over, India were not taking victory for granted until Sri Lanka’s latest version of the Ice Man was dismissed. Sri Lanka were under the gun when Kandamby walked in and once he got going in that beguiling manner – composed yet adventurous – and India’s fielding fell to pieces, a home victory seemed a distinct possibility. In the 44th over, India were put out of their frustration when Harbhajan struck in the first over of the batting Powerplay. Thirteen deliveries later, he took out Ajantha Mendis, cueing hysterical scenes from the Indian team as fireworks lit up the night sky. It was his first five-wicket haul since March 2006, and his best performance in a tournament final. In the end, India’s victory over Sri Lanka was a surprisingly tense one, considering that they would have rated their chances very highly after Sachin Tendulkar’s 44th one-day century carried them to 319. A sloppy fielding performance in which two sitters were dropped, a slew of run-out opportunities went begging and another excellent innings from Kandamby, combined to give India a mighty scare. The fielding was utterly disappointing. Virat Kohli put down Sanath Jayasuriya at point, and the muffed chance against Kandamby – a dolly that Yusuf Pathan made a meal of when the batsman was on 36 – followed. MS Dhoni had a poor time behind the stumps, twice returning stray throws when Kandamby was struggling. Sides aspiring to be No. 1 can ill-afford such appalling displays, as Dhoni reminded.”You’ve got to learn from your mistakes. We made quite a few today and as a team we didn’t field well,” he said. “Thanks to characters in the side, we ended up on the winning side. It’s very special to us. We are winning here after a long time. If you are the second best team, you can’t make these kind of mistakes.”This match nearly slipped out of India’s hands, but Harbhajan struck at crucial junctures. Sri Lanka began their innings needing to score at 6.40 runs per over to win. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Jayasuriya responded strongly and scored at a fast clip. The two kept the foot firmly down on the accelerator and the runs came in a torrent. The bowling change brought a wicket, and it was Harbhajan who benefited when Dilshan went after one that skidded on and took the inside edge. A red-faced Harbhajan let loose a war cry, pumped that he had come on and immediately limited Dilshan’s demolition to a 29-ball 42. From 64 for no loss in 7.4 overs, Sri Lanka slumped to 85 for 3 in 11.Harbhajan has been India’s best spinner for as long as one can remember in limited-overs cricket, but mostly through drying up runs. His economy-rate has generally been good but wickets haven’t always been forthcoming. Tonight he got wickets when it mattered. It was a long overdue performance. Tonight he combined some refreshing air on the ball with an understanding of Sri Lankan pitches. He got Dilshan with a slider, scrambled seam being the key, and Mahela Jayawardene with a doosra. Then he delivered the killer blow, bowling Kandamby and getting Lasith Malinga first ball.India owed much to Suresh Raina too, who had a superb outing. A tidy offspinner with a classical round-arm action, Raina churned out a clever mix of slower balls and cutters. His slow loopy bowling confused the batsmen – Kumar Sangakkara should have been stumped on 21 but Dhoni fumbled – but he also got enough turn to keep them guessing. In his first six overs he gave only 18 runs and bowled 19 dot balls, 16 of them to Kandamby. When he came back for the 41st over, Sri Lanka needed 80 from 60 balls, and Raina gave three singles and a leg bye. Then he struck in the 43rd over, as Chamara Kapugedera edged a quicker one.Sangakkara pinpointed that dismissal as the turning point. “We were in it until Kapugedera got out,” he said. “Kandamby and Kapugedera showed a lot of character in the middle order to get us close, but it was disappointing to lose, given the way those two were chasing.”Raina’s bowling from around the stumps – which he perfected in South Africa during the IPL this year – has proved useful and he has given the team an extra dimension. In between overs 40 and 44, India allowed Sri Lanka 18 runs and took a wicket. That was a crucial passage.Harbhajan, and several others, would have had vivid memories of this venue four years ago when they lost another final to Sri Lanka. This wasn’t any ordinary win; this was India’s first tournament success in Sri Lanka since 1998. India had been thumped in Saturday’s dress rehearsal, their top order had been shaky, and they were up against history. This was retribution, at some level, for years of struggle in finals against this opposition. Points in the bag, yes, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement and higher gears to be reached if they are to challenge teams in the Champions Trophy.

Billy Taylor released by Hampshire

Hampshire have announced that fast bowler Billy Taylor will be released at the end of the season.

Cricinfo staff27-Aug-2009Hampshire have announced that fast bowler Billy Taylor will be released at the end of the season.Taylor, 32, started his career at Sussex in 1999 before moving to Hampshire in 2004. He was awarded his county cap in 2006 but in recent seasons he had become a one-day specialist, with only one Championship appearance since 2006.I’d like to thank Billy for his contribution to our club,” Rod Bransgrove, Hampshire’s chairman, said. “Billy has been a real crowd favourite and I know he will be missed by many. However, together with Giles White, we have decided that our bowling focus lies elsewhere and we have agreed with Billy that now is the right time to part ways.””I’d really like to thank the fans, who have all been so supportive of me and I will miss them singing my name and giving me such a warm welcome on and off the field, it truly has meant so much to me, Taylor said. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Club and will take away some great memories. I plan to stay involved in cricket and hope to be a regular visitor to The Rose Bowl in years to come.”In 54 first-class matches Taylor took 136 wickets at 33.34, his career-best 6 for 32 coming against Middlesex in the first match of the 2006 season. He also played 142 one-day games where he took 182 wickets at 25.81.

Di Marzio drops exciting Rudiger claim

Speaking to Wett Freunde, journalist Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports has made an exciting Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Lowdown: Rudiger future up in the air…

One of the major talking points at Stamford Bridge right now is the future of the Germany international who still hasn’t put pen to paper on a new Chelsea deal.

Reports out of his homeland even suggest Rudiger is frustrated with the lack of effort going into tying him down as Spurs become linked with potentially signing him.

Sharing an update on Tottenham’s pursuit, Di Marzio has now made an exciting claim.

The Latest: Di Marzio drops exciting Rudiger claim…

Speaking to Wett Freunde, the reliable transfer reporter has revealed that Rudiger is currently in talks with Tottenham, Paris-Saint Germain, Juventus and Man City as he decides his next destination.

It appears Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici has now taken a keen interest in snapping up the Champions League winner and Di Marzio believes he ‘will’ join one of the four named teams.

“Rüdiger is in talks with Juventus, Man City, Tottenham and even PSG who still need a defender,” he explained.

“It’s difficult for him to sign a new contract. He will join one of the 4 named teams.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

While Spurs signed a more-than capable centre-half in the summer, bringing in Serie A MVP award-winner Cristian Romero, it is debatable whether he has a truly world class partner.

Davinson Sanchez has shown his capability and performed well so far this season but a move for Rudiger, who Rio Ferdinand called ‘phenomenal’ for his Chelsea displays, could be too good to turn down, becoming a formidable pairing alongside the Lilywhites’ impressive Argentinian.

Spurs now ‘preparing’ Vlahovic bid

Taking to Twitter, Fichajes reporter Ekrem Konur has made a interesting Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Vlahovic chased by Spurs…

Towards the end of the summer transfer window, reports indicated that La Viola’s star forward was very much a wanted man at Spurs.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, talks were apparently held over a move for the Serbian powerhouse and there are claims that a bid was even made to bring him to north London by managing director Fabio Paratici.

Now, Konur has shared some news on Vlahovic in another update involving Tottenham.

The Latest: Konur drops interesting Spurs transfer claim…

Taking to his social media, the Fichajes journalist has made an interesting out-of-window claim with Spurs ‘preparing’ an offer to sign him.

The Turkish reporter says that the Lilywhites and Paratici are currently plotting an eight-figure bid of £30 million for Vlahovic despite some reports indicating he could cost over double that amount (Calciomercato.it).

It appears Spurs are planning to play low ball with the 21-year-old still yet to officially extend his stay with Fiorentina.

The Verdict: Certain rejection…

If Tottenham do submit an opening bid that low, we believe it is almost certain to get rejected considering how well he performed in Italy last year.

Vlahovic bagged 21 goals in Serie A alone over 2020/2021, with Italian football expert Conor Clancy calling him a ‘really exciting player’ when he spoke exclusively to The Transfer Tavern.

£30m is an optimistic first offer to say the very least for one of Europe’s hottest young strikers.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Zaha comments

Former Crystal Palace player Darren Ambrose shared a post on Twitter featuring comments from Wilfried Zaha on Sunday evening, and a number of Eagles fans have been interacting with the one-time midfielder on social media.

Zaha, who still has just under two years remaining on his Selhurst Park deal, netted his first goal of the season in the 3-0 win over Tottenham earlier this month.

That took the 28-year-old’s goal tally to 69, with the Ivorian in line to make his 400th appearance for the club in his next outing. Zaha has been tipped to spend the rest of his career at Selhurst Park, and he recently shared his love for the Palace support.

Ambrose posted these comments from the Ivorian winger on Twitter, with the Palace star hailing the Eagles faithful for their support through the good and the bad:

“I feel like they are the only fans that back you through absolutely everything. Even when you are in bad form, they remember your good performances. Winning a trophy for them would be massive.”

Palace fans react

Ambrose admitted that he agreed 100% with Zaha, with these Palace fans giving their thoughts in response. They were all quick to heap praise on the current Selhurst Park legend, with many sharing their ‘love’ for Zaha.
