Liverpool fans react to Timo Werner’s display against Bayern Munich

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react to Timo Werner’s performance against Bayern Munich on Sunday evening. The 29-cap Germany international was starting in attack for Julian Nagelsmann at the Allianz Arena, in what was a top-of-the-table clash – Bayern Munich are only one point ahead of RB Leipzig at the top of the Bundesliga.

In Werner’s case, he was looking to add to his already impressive tally of 20 goals in just 21 Bundesliga appearances this season – he has also registered six assists.

The Liverpool target – James Pearce of The Athletic said he has been mentioned as an option in a Q&A session – ended up drawing a blank as the two sides played out a 0-0 draw, although it was not for the want of trying for Werner, who had five shots on goal.

The 23-year-old also embarked on four dribbles and was fouled twice, while recording one key pass.

He also missed a sitter, but we will excuse him due to his absurd goalscoring numbers so far this term.

Let’s see what the Liverpool fans on Twitter were saying about his performance…

To kick off the reaction, @LFC_Wahome tweeted in defence of the striker as if Werner was already a Liverpool player!

This fan also added that the German “has to be got” as he “would hugely improve our squad” – it’s hard to argue with that claim.

Elsewhere, these two supporters pinpointed some traits of Werner’s that they liked.

Grizz highlighted the forward’s versatility – he has appeared in the centre and on the left throughout this season according to WhoScored – and said that the RB Leipzig No.11 is “just the type of flexible fluid attacker” who would fit right in at Anfield.

Tony then said that Werner works hard, is quick and direct, while he also has quality – this fan also said that he would be “perfect for Klopp” to mould into one of the world’s best.

Meanwhile, this pair of Liverpool supporters mentioned how Werner would perform under Klopp.

@LFCismyblood said that the prolific attacker would “be a monster under Klopp” while Freyt said that there is “no doubt” that the RB Leipzig man would flourish under the former Borussia Dortmund boss.

Lastly, this supporter had a slightly different view on Werner’s performance.

Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?

‘LFC IS LIFE’ simply tweeted that the German was “dropping a disaster-class” against Bayern Munich – after his goalscoring feats so far, surely this fan can forgive him.

In other news, these Liverpool fans think a “masterclass from Edwards” is incoming…

Winning PL race for Che Adams could finally rid Newcastle United of awful Joselu

According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Che Adams’ future is far from certain heading into the remainder of the January transfer window. The 22-year-old currently plays his football at Championship side Birmingham City and has done so since leaving Sheffield United back in 2016, with his impressive efforts upfront for the Blues seemingly attracting interest from the Premier League.

And that’s because reports suggest that as many as 12 top-flight teams scouted the £2.25 million-rated sensation (as per Transfermarkt) at the weekend in Birmingham’s defeat against Middlesbrough, and while it’s unclear whether Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United were one of those sides, they certainly should seek to win the race for Adams in a bid to rid them of awful Joselu.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, 22-year-old Adams shone at Sheffield United in the 2015/16 season to thus earn a step up to the Championship with Birmingham that summer, with the striker then very much proving his worth with seven goals in his first season at St Andrew’s, and then nine the campaign after.

Yet the former England Under-20 international has this term taken it up another level by netting a sensational 13 goals in just 27 Championship appearances for Garry Monk’s men, the latest of which coming in front of those 12 scouts in the Blues’ 2-1 loss to Tony Pulis’ Boro on Saturday.

And with four assists as well, Adams appears to be developing into the ideal all round forward – yet the same simply cannot be said of Joselu at Newcastle.

The 28-year-old made the move to St James’ Park back in the summer of 2017 as Benitez sought attacking reinforcements upon Newcastle’s return to the Premier League, although Joselu’s pretty poor record at Stoke City in the years previous, scoring just four times for the Potters between 2015 and 2017, was very much a sign of things to come.

And that’s because the Galicia international has unsurprisingly struggled for goals in the North East with only seven to his name in 49 appearances for the Magpies, just two of which have come in the Premier League this term, and they came all the way back in August.

Yes, the 28-year-old does have ability in the forward role in terms of holding the ball up and bringing others into play, but he simply doesn’t have the necessary predatory instincts in front of goal to turn golden opportunities into goals – there have been plenty of occasions in his Newcastle career in which he has missed glaring chances.

And that simply isn’t good enough for a team seeking to move up the Premier League table in the second half of the season – yes, Salomon Rondon appears to be the main man at the club presently, but that’s not to say that Joselu won’t be used by Benitez as the season progresses.

And that is why the Magpies simply have to win the race for Birmingham’s Adams – he has that predatory instinct in front of goal, and at the tender age of 22, he is surely only going to get better, especially under the guidance of an outstanding coach like Benitez.

Thus, Newcastle must seek to beat their Premier League rivals to the striker, as doing so would not only bolster their forward ranks, but it could also rid them of awful Joselu.

Leeds fans react as Ayling faces two months out

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Leeds fans have been reacting to another major setback, as Luke Ayling will be sidelined for two months with a knee injury.

Leeds fans were concerned before the season started that they didn’t have enough squad depth, and those concerns have already been justified.

The Whites have just been boosted by the returns of Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe, but are now expected to be without Ayling for a considerable amount of time.

The ever-popular defender left the 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest in the first half, and the club have now confirmed that he will be out for two months.

[ad_pod ]

Ayling has damaged his MCL on his right knee, and Bielsa is now down to barebones in the full-back position.

There are hopes that Barry Douglas will return at left-back very soon, but Ayling’s setback is a major concern.

He hasn’t quite been at his best this season, but it was his injury that sparked last season’s awful run of form, and Bielsa will have to work his magic to avoid a similar meltdown.

Leeds must sign Bruno Martins Indi when Stoke secure Williams deal

According to the BBC, Stoke are close to completing a deal for Everton centre-back Ashley Williams, and the Welshman’s arrival should be the signal for Leeds to target the 6ft 1in Bruno Martins Indi.

What’s the story?

BBC Sport reports that Williams is set to have a medical at the bet365 stadium and will become new boss Gary Rowett’s seventh signing of the summer as he looks to build a squad that can fire the club straight back to the Premier League.

Williams made 24 league appearances for Everton last season after the arrival of Michael Keane brought more competition for the central defenders at Goodison Park.

The BBC also reports that Williams is now back to action and ready for the new season after he punctured a lung playing for Wales against Mexico earlier in the summer.

An opportunity

If the Potters do sign the 33-year-old this summer, they may look to offload a centre-back to balance the books. New Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has been linked with a number of defenders this summer and missed out on Kyle Bartley to West Brom, according to talkSPORT.

Now though, the highly regarded Argentine manager should look to Stoke’s Netherlands international Bruno Martins Indi to solve his defensive frailties at Elland Road.

The 26-year-old made just 17 league appearances last season having struggled with injury, and he could be looking for a move away with the Championship perhaps not being where he wants to be this term.

While that could be the case, it shouldn’t stop Leeds making an ambitious enquiry to bring the Dutchman, valued by Transfermarkt at just £9m, to Elland Road, perhaps with an added promise that he can go next summer if they fail to win promotion.

West Ham United fans see no way back for Slaven Bilic after heavy defeat

West Ham United are facing big decisions in the days and weeks ahead after another demoralising defeat in the English Premier League. This time it was Newcastle United who piled the pressure on Slaven Bilic, picking apart his side in a 3-0 victory at St James’ Park.

It’s the first time the Hammers have started a Premier League season with three defeats since 2010/11, the year they finished bottom of the league and were relegated to the Championship.

The warning signs are there that they could have a tough season ahead and for some fans the situation is becoming untenable for Bilic, many now believing that he should leave the club.

With lots of soul searching to do over the international break, West Ham are next in action at home to Huddersfield Town and the jury is out on whether the Croatian will be in charge of that one or not.

Fans took to Twitter to share their dismay at the current situation, calling for the decision makers at the London Stadium to cut ties with the manager…

Dunne backs Rooney to shine if he rejoined Everton

Wayne Rooney’s future at Manchester United has been a hot topic throughout the season and more fuel was recently added to the fire via comments from Everton boss Ronald Koeman, who opened the door for a sensational return to Goodison Park.

Those comments have sparked plenty of debate as to whether Rooney would consider a return to his boyhood club and whether he would be a good fit back on Merseyside- with former Toffees defender Richard Dunne the latest to share his views.

Whilst others have questioned the motives behind the transfer, Dunne told TalkSport that Rooney could shine for a number of years yet and pointed at Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic as evidence to back-up his claim.

“It would be a great signing. There is a lot left in Wayne Rooney. He has obviously not had a run of games this year but in terms of fitness and ability that is not really in question. He just has to look at Ibrahimovic and see how strong and how good he is at his age, 35. Rooney is only 31.”

“It would be a great signing for Everton, if they can get him, but I’m sure there will be a long list of clubs who think Rooney can improve their side.”

Tied down until 2019, Rooney could be offloaded this summer as opportunities at Manchester United are becoming limited and he was a top-target for Chinese clubs during the first couple of months at 2017- and they could revive their interest in him this summer.

Five transfer coups Benitez could secure for Newcastle this summer

Newcastle United fans probably aren’t even thinking about what might happen in the summer just yet as the club’s battle for Premier League survival continues, but the coming transfer window could be an incredibly exciting one with Rafa Benitez at the helm.

First of all, the Spaniard has reportedly taken the Toon job on the proviso that he’ll be given free reign in the transfer market, so there won’t be another Ligue 1 haul arriving courtesy of chief scout Graham Carr and controversial owner Mike Ashley won’t be flogging the club’s top talents to the highest bidder.

But secondly and perhaps more importantly, Benitez is one of the best in the business who boasts vast connections throughout European football, having worked in La Liga, Serie A and of course, the Premier League, and that combination could grant Newcastle access to a level of the transfer market that has repeatedly evaded them in recent years.

With that in mind and the Magpies starting to move in the right direction following a draw to Sunderland on Sunday, here are FIVE transfer coups Benitez could secure for his club during the coming transfer window – providing they stay in the top flight.

Gabi

The inspiration for this list, Atletico Madrid captain Gabi was linked with a shock move to Newcastle United by Spanish outlet Marca last week.

The Spaniard doesn’t offer much longevity at the age of 32 but he’s supremely experienced, lifting a Europa League title, Copa del Rey and La Liga title with the Mattress Makers – captaining them to the latter two triumphs.

Gabi’s a hardworking midfielder who combines industriousness with consistency in possession, averaging 3 tackles, 2.1 interceptions and 62 successful passes per match this season, and rumour has it he wants a transfer to the Premier League before his career comes to a close.

With his contract set to enter its final twelve months, the coming transfer window represents Newcastle’s best chance of luring him away from Vincente Calderon and his disciplined style suits Benitez’s tactical approach.

SOFIANE FEGHOULI

Sofiane Feghouli looks set to leave Valencia upon the expiration of his contract this summer and a wealth of clubs have reportedly taken a look at the Algerian ace, not least including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

The 26-year-old has never been the quickest of wide men and is really struggling for form this season, finding just one goal and one assist in 18 La Liga outings, but remains a good technician with creative instincts and a decent eye for goal.

He proved as much in the Champions League’s Group Stages earlier this season, netting twice in five outings whilst averaging 2.2 created chances per match, and would offer the Magpies added width in attack.

Something tells me the aforementioned clubs won’t come good on their reported interest this summer so if the Toon act quickly, Benitez’s presence on Tyneside could see them seal a deal for the 35-cap international.

JOSE CALLEJON

Jose Callejon enjoyed the best form of his career under Rafa Benitez after being brought to Napoli by the Newcastle boss in summer 2013, bagging 26 goals and nine assists in 75 Serie A outings during the Spaniard’s two campaigns in Naples.

He can operate as a striker, a wide man or a No.10, capable of converting chances or providing them for others, and comes with good pedigree, having begun his career in the Real Mardid academy and later represented them on 77 occasions at senior level following an intermittent spell at Espanyol.

Having failed to rekindle that same level of form under Benitez’s Napoli successor Maurizio Sarri this season, Callejon might be open to leaving Napoli this summer – especially considering he’s now 29 years of age and running out of time to test himself in another league.

Likewise, with his contract verging upon its final two years, a summer departure could suit the Naples outfit as well. A talented attacker with 42 outings in European competitions under his belt, producing an impressive 15 goals, Callejon would be a real coup for the relegation-threatened Toon.

CHRISTIAN BENTEKE

Despite Aleksandar Mitrovic’s late heroics against Sunderland, Newcastle United still lack a centre-forward they can truly depend on for a consistent supply of goals.

Enter Liverpool’s Christian Benteke, who looks to become one of the only strikers combining proven Premier League pedigree, decent age and availability during the summer transfer window amid reports Jurgen Klopp will look to offload the out-of-favour Belgian battering ram.

Indeed, the 25-year-old’s target man services just don’t suit the Klopp philosophy but he netted 49 times across three campaigns with Aston Villa and would amass an even greater haul in a side willing to offer him the right kind of service.

Benteke’s availability is already intriguing a number of clubs, most notably West Ham, but the Benitez connection could give Newcastle the upper hand in any negotiations with the Merseyside outfit.

RAUL ALBIOL

Another Napoli ace who might be interested in a Benitez reunion is Raul Albiol – who also worked under the Spaniard at Valencia, albeit at youth team level, all the way back in 2002.

He’s another Real Madrid import the Magpies gaffer brought to Naples and has represented the Spanish national team on a whopping 53 occasions, featuring in the squads that lifted consecutive European Championships and the 2010 World Cup.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a new defensive leader amid Fabricio Coloccini’s desperate struggles for form, preferrably at centre-half, and the 30-year-old more than fits the bill in that regard.

Now coming to the end of his best years and set to enter the final twelve months of his contract this summer, a decent bid could well convince the Serie A outfit to sell. But Albiol has played regularly at European level for the entirety of his senior career and may resultantly deem the Magpies a little below his station.

‘For the best’ – Luis Enrique defends 4-2-4 tactics in PSG’s crushing 4-1 Champions League defeat at Newcastle & claims final score flattered the Magpies

Luis Enrique has defended his tactics in Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Newcastle, with a 4-2-4 system attracting criticism.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite heading out on the road to St James’ Park – with a lively home support ready to cheer the Magpies on – PSG refused to rein in their ambition when paying a midweek visit to England. Luis Enrique stuck with an attack-minded formation that saw Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos and Kylian Mbappe all in the same starting XI.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

PSG paid the price for their ambition when being left open at the back, with Newcastle enjoying a dream outing against the Ligue 1 title holders. They were three goals up inside 50 minutes, with the visitors carved open with ease at times.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Despite that, Enrique told Canal+ afterwards when discussing his tactics and the final outcome: “I thought it was for the best, and I still do. Those are difficult games to live through for a manager. I sincerely think the result is a bit unfair, but not totally. Congratulations to Newcastle, they played very good football. They were effective in the last part of the pitch and we made some mistakes, it is hard to accept that. If you make mistakes you pay for that. Their press worked. We tried to put in front of their goal as many chances as possible but we weren’t so effective in the last part of the pitch. But the scoreline is excessive. The result is so big for them. But I think we didn’t deserve that result.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Lucas Hernandez appeared to suggest afterwards that the wrong approach had been taken, saying it was “the manager’s choice” to field four forwards – while admitting that it “did not work”. Both PSG and Newcastle remain in the hunt for places in the last-16, with Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan the other sides in Group F.

Russia 2018: Low, Southgate & all 32 World Cup coaches

The attention will be on the big stars in Russia this summer, but the men in the dugouts will play a significant role, too

  • Getty

    Stanislav Cherchesov | Russia

The star goalkeeper for Spartak Moscow in the late 1980s and early 90s, Cherchesov won two Soviet league titles and then another two Russian crowns after the USSR’s collapse. He was even given the honour of being Russia’s first ever national team captain and featured at the 1994 World Cup and Euro 1995.

Success followed him outside Russia, too. After a brief spell in Germany he ended up in Austria and helped Tyrol Innsbruck end their 10-year title drought. It soon became three in a row with a cup final and two super cup victories to add to the mix.

Despite ending his career with a fourth spell at Spartak, he took his first coaching steps in Austria’s regional leagues before heading back to Innsbruck, where newly-formed Wacker had replaced his now-bankrupt former side.

Lasting just two years there, he returned to Moscow as Spartak’s sporting director, but quickly found himself in the dugout and leading their title challenge. They missed out on the last day of the season, however, and he was sacked after a year in the role.

He drifted around Russia for a while, but coaching success has only come to him recently. The former shot-stopper ended up at Legia Warsaw in 2015 and won the domestic double at the first time of asking with the Polish side.

The national team came calling just over a year into his Legia reign and he could not resist the chance to lead his side’s World Cup campaign on home soil.

Juan Antonio Pizzi | Saudi Arabia

Juan Antonio Pizzi walked into a bizarre situation when he took the Saudi Arabia job in November 2017.

The Argentine was their third coach in just a few months, having seen compatriot Edgardo Bauza sacked two months and five games into his reign after replacing Bert van Marwijk, who navigated two qualifying rounds to seal a spot in Russia and left days later.

Pizzi, though, will feel he has what it takes to make their first World Cup in 12 years a good one. The former Barcelona player took Chile to Copa America success in his last job, beating Argentina on penalties on the final.

A journey to the Confederations Cup final the following year set La Roja up for a good World Cup qualifying campaign, but they were still not sure of a spot when the last game came around and a win over Brazil proved too big a challenge and Pizzi resigned in the wake of their failure.

Just six weeks later, he made the jump to Arabian Peninsula to ensure he does indeed get a ticket to Russia.

  • Getty

    Hector Cuper | Egypt

In Hector Cuper, Egypt are under the guardianship of a man who has a talent for taking teams far in competitions but buckling on the big stage.

Since winning the Copa CONMEBOL with Argentine side Lanus, he has made it to the final of Champions League on consecutive occasions, Cup Winners’ Cup, Copa del Rey, Greek Cup and even Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt and lost them all.

He did, however, claim the Supercopa de Espana in 1998 with Mallorca and again the following year with Valencia. His spell at Los Che has been the most successful of his career, as he earned continental acclaim despite the crushing European final defeats to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

He then took charge at Inter and lost another final of sorts, seeing the title slip out of their hands on the last day of the season in 2002 and end up at Juventus. They then made it to the last four of the Champions League, losing to AC Milan.

Brief and obscure reigns have been the main theme of Cuper’s career since then, but he has shown promise with Egypt. Since their AFCON 2017 final loss to Cameroon, however, they have been on shaky form and the Argentine will be hoping Mohamed Salah is fit enough to help him go far on the big stage again.

    Oscar Tabarez | Uruguay

The 71-year-old has been in charge of Uruguay for 12 years now and has earned the world’s respect for his role in bringing the national team back to great heights.

La Celeste were in ruin when he took over for the second time in 2006, but his reign saw the introduction of a new style that swept from the senior side down through the youth teams.

Four years later, a Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan-led side reached the semi-finals of the tournament, aided by the ever-controversial Suarez’s handball on the line. The following year, they beat Paraguay in the final to win the Copa America for the first time in 16 years.

Since then, Tabarez’s men have underwhelmed in competitions and their place in Russia this year was in doubt until the last qualifying game as they hit a worrying run of form, but Tabarez has made it through the worst part of it. He came close to leaving during that bad patch, but was persuaded to stay and will be hoping to restore his reputation by taking them back among the big guns.
