'Tough to miss out on first Test' – Wagner

Neil Wagner said it was “tough” to miss out on the first Test and the made the most of his opportunity in the second, picking up his maiden five-wicket haul

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur22-Oct-2013The last time Neil Wagner played a match in Bangladesh was also the last time he played for his native South Africa at any level. That knowledge of conditions and pitches, albeit more than five years old, played a part in his maiden five-wicket haul during the second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand.”Of course I remember that tour,” Wagner said. “I remember the fields, the wickets and the players. Nasir [Hossain] and Mushfiqur [Rahim] were playing in that series too, it was my first subcontinent experience and was a learning experience that helped this time, definitely.”Wagner opened the bowling for South Africa Academy when he came to Bangladesh for a four-week tour in 2008. He took four wickets in two four-day matches and two more in a one-day tri-series also involving the Pakistan academy. A few weeks later, he played in the Liverpool league before heading to New Zealand to play in the State Championship the following season. He cut off his South African connections and four years later in July 2012, made his Test debut for New Zealand in the West Indies. This was his best bowling performance for New Zealand since his debut and while the five-for made him happy, Wagner was cautious about whether it could help him seal a permanent place in the side. Nonetheless, when Rubel Hossain nicked to the keeper to become Wagner’s fifth wicket, it was just reward for the best bowler on show.”It is tough work out there. You have to keep running in, keep fighting. It is pretty slow but I enjoy bowling on a wicket like that,” Wagner said. “You have to make sure you don’t leak too much runs. Dougie [Bracewell] and Trent [Boult] started off well. They created the pressure for me to take the wickets.”Wagner’s first four wickets were decisive to New Zealand’s progress in the game. When he removed Marshall Ayub in the first morning, it ended a strong second-wicket partnership that promised more than its final yield of 67 runs.Tamim Iqbal and Marshall were dominating the bowlers, forcing Brendon McCullum into thinking about containment before lunch on the first day. But Wagner drew Marshall forward, created a gap between his bat and pad, and got one to swing back onto the stumps. Wagner provided another crucial strike, removing Tamim for 95, to offset the balance in New Zealand’s favour. His dismissals of Mushfiqur and Sohag Gazi early on the second day prevented any fightback from the home side.Wagner didn’t play the Chittagong Test with New Zealand opting for the extra spinner, and he wanted to produce a good account of himself this time around. “I want to put my hand up and make most of every opportunity I get. I think for me personally it was tough to miss out on the first Test but it is one of those things.”He brought a bit of aggression to the proceedings, which would be needed once again in the second innings on a pitch that is likely to deteriorate further. But he likes a bit of a scrap, and that is exactly what could happen if the next three days have no more rain.”When you get another chance, you have to grab it with both hands. I have to put my head down and try to do this again. There’s always a couple of plans in place [when I bowl]. At the end of the day if the plan comes off it is a pretty good thing.”

Glamorgan resurrected their hopes of reaching the Friends Life T20 quarter-finals with a final over victory over Worcestershire in Cardiff. The hosts were indebted to half centuries from Murray Goodwin and Jim Allenby and a match-winning cameo from Ben Wright. Set 158 to win, Glamorgan won by five wickets with five balls to spare.Glamorgan went into the match having lost three on the trot after they had won all four of their first group games. But they suffered three setbacks in the opening eight overs as they slipped to 46 for 3 in response to Worcestershire’s 157 for 6.The home side lost Mark Wallace in the second over before Chris Cooke was caught at third man and then skipper Marcus North was trapped leg before by Moeen Ali. Even with Allenby looking in good form and with Goodwin in support they needed 100 from 10 overs.Allenby took the pressure off by hitting a six off Shaaiq Choudhry and that started a good spell for Glamorgan as he and Goodwin shared a partnership of 59 off 43 balls for the fourth wicket. But Allenby, who reached his 50 from 42 balls, holed out off Gareth Andrew. At that stage Glamorgan needed 53 from 32 balls, which became 37 required from the final four overs.Goodwin brought up his 50 from 30 balls but was caught off the last ball of the 18th over to leave Glamorgan still needing 18 from the final 12 balls. But Wright, 22 not out from 12 balls, produced a productive penultimate over scoring 13 from the first four balls which meant Glamorgan needed only one to win from the final over. After Worcestershire won the toss Thilan Samaraweera was the mainstay of their innings with 65 from 42 balls with eight fours and a six. After being restricted to only 27 for 1 in the opening six overs, bowled exclusively by the seamers on a greenish pitch, Samaraweera dominated a second wicket stand with Alexi Kervezee worth 91 in 10.1 overs. That was after Ali was caught at cover off Wagg, who ended as Glamorgan’s star bowler with three for 15 from his four overs.Worcestershire accelerated their score when the spinners were on. The slower bowlers conceded 98 runs from nine overs. The visitors had looked well set thanks to Sri Lankan Samaraweera before he was run out by a direct hit from Goodwin in the 14th over with Worcestershire 103for 2.West Indian Andre Russell was bowled from an inside edge from Wagg before Nathan McCullum picked up the wicket of Kervezee (44 from 40 balls) in his final over. Wagg claimed a third wicket when Joe Leach was caught on the deep midwicket boundary before Ben Cox went in Michael Hogan’s final over.

Pakistan focus on fitness in Abbottabad camp

Pakistan’s six-day conditioning camp in Abbottabad concluded on Wednesday, ahead of the Champions Trophy in England

Umar Farooq in Abbottabad08-May-2013Pakistan’s cricketers focused primarily on fitness and batting skills during the six-day training camp in Abbottabad, which concluded on Wednesday, ahead of the Champions Trophy in England. The players returned to their hometowns and will reassemble on Monday in Lahore before departing for Scotland. The weather in Abbottabad, at an altitude of 1260m, remained pleasant throughout the camp and the players took part in some practice matches. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said the players had ample time to gel.”The purpose of coming here was that the team should train without any distractions,” Misbah said. “It’s a bit cooler here and the pitches had offered some movement for the batsmen to cope with.”Misbah also said the players needed to pay more attention to fitness. “We are seeking improvement in fitness, at least close to the requirements of international cricket. We are not there yet but we are trying to hit the benchmark.”During the camp, you must have seen that fielding is directly associated with your level of fitness and we are working on both,” Misbah said. “We understand that if your fitness and fielding does not improve you will suffer in international cricket, especially in T20 and one-day cricket.”Misbah said the team’s defeats in South Africa had made his players mentally stronger. “In South Africa we played some tough cricket in tough conditions and the boys will benefit from it mentally. You get ready to face difficulties and I think our performance will be good in the Champions Trophy.”Opening batsman and T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez had rigorous net sessions, mainly working on his technique against seam bowling. Hafeez had a poor tour of South Africa, where he scored only 43 runs in the Tests and 118 in the ODIs, and was dismissed by Dale Styen on six occasions.Pakistan’s coach Dav Whatmore said it was more of a skills camp. “Obviously this is not the northern hemisphere, but it’s a destination where we can achieve a few things,” he said. “This is not a conditioning camp, this is skills camp because we are close to the competition. We are pretty happy with what we got, we had some bad (rainy) weather on Sunday but we managed to get 70 overs for ample match practice.”Pakistan had lost the Test series in South Africa 3-0 but fared better in the one-dayers, losing 3-2. “In the last series we were one game from winning the series,” Whatmore said. “We are okay, we just needed to improve on a couple of areas and we would have been a series winner.”Chances in the Champions Trophy is difficult to predict accurately, but I tell you what this team has got the ability. If we play to our potential we can put pressure on any team. Our goal is obviously to win it.”Pakistan will play two ODIs each against Scotland and Ireland later this month before taking on West Indies, South Africa and India in its Champions Trophy Group B matches.

Right knee bothers Pietersen

Alastair Cook has revealed there is some worry over Kevin Pietersen’s right knee after he was forced to spend time off the field during the first Test

Andrew McGlashan in Dunedin10-Mar-2013Alastair Cook has revealed there is some worry over Kevin Pietersen’s right knee after he was forced to spend time off the field during the first Test.Pietersen, who made 0 and 12, did not field between lunch and tea on the third day. He returned for the final session that was shortened by rain and also fielded when New Zealand batted for a further nine overs on Saturday, although that could have been to ensure he could bat in his usual No. 4 spot if required as the injury was not an external blow.Cook said: “There has been a bit of concern about his right knee in this Test match but he should be fit to play in Wellington.”After Pietersen was dismissed on the final afternoon he was spotted by TV cameras sat in the dressing room with a black X marking a spot on his knee. Pietersen has only been part of the Test leg of this trip having been rested for the Twenty20s and ODIs. He was dismissed by Neil Wagner in both innings at University Oval.Should an injury rule out any of England’s specialist batsmen during the series Jonny Bairstow is the reserve player in the squad.Graeme Swann’s tour ended on the opening day of the Dunedin Test when it was decided he needed surgery on his right elbow. He has returned the UK before flying to the United States for the operation. James Tredwell, the Kent offspinner, has now arrived in New Zealand to bolster the squad.

Quick Indian-visa process likely for Pakistan fans

Pakistan’s whistle stop two-week, five-match tour of India that starts on Christmas Day in Bangalore could be kicked off with the 3000 Pakistani ticket-holders for the series being issued Indian visas in less than ten days

Sharda Ugra06-Dec-2012Pakistan’s whistle stop two-week, five-match tour of India that starts on Christmas Day in Bangalore could be kicked off with the 3000 Pakistani ticket-holders for the series being issued Indian visas in less than ten days. The Pakistan tour of India, featuring two T20 Internationals in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, and three ODIs in Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi, has been pushed through via the highest levels of the government and cricket administration on both sides of the border. The PCB will be issued the 3000 tickets and will soon finalise and announce the mechanism to be put in place for the sale of the tickets. Of the total 3000 tickets, there will be 1000 for the match in Delhi and 500 for each of the other four cities. Pakistan citizens holding tickets to all five matches will be issued five-city visas, an unusual diplomatic practice in itself. An announcement on a quicker visa-issuing process for the cricket is expected in a few days’ time.A four-man PCB recce team concluded its visit of India on Thursday, after travelling to each of the venues where the matches will be held. Ehsan Sadiq, the PCB’s director of security and vigilance is the head of the delegation which includes Usman Wahla, manager international cricket, Sohail Khan, senior police officer of the Punjab Police and Nadeem Sarwar, general manager, media. Sarwar said that the issue of security will largely be left in the hands of the hosts. “What we expect is fool-proof security for our players, and we expect that the capability that these cities have will provide that.”The PCB recce team’s chief concerns were more related to practice facilities and net bowlers, and ensuring that team hotels clear out mini-bars. There was, Sarwar said, no strict ‘ban’ on players socialising or attending private parties. “We would discourage individuals from socialising because it’s going to be a very busy tour – five matches in 14 days. It’s not like there’s a ban or a restrictive list [of activities] on the tour, because there is very little time for socialising.”He said the future of Indo-Pak cricketing relations depended on India: “The ball will now be in their court.” As for international cricket in Pakistan, Sarwar said that the PCB was confident that teams would start visiting Pakistan “very soon”. “It is, at the moment, just a question of perception. We are in negotiations with several boards. Teams will start coming to Pakistan, hopefully soon.”On this tour, the Pakistan team, Sarwar said, wanted to redress their recent poor record against India: India had won the previous four games between the teams – two Asia Cup ODIs, the 2011 World Cup semi-final and a World T20 group match in September. The PCB team met with BCCI president N Srinivasan in Chennai and were in Kolkata two days before the Test match between India and England. Jagmohan Dalmiya, the former BCCI president and president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, told the PCB team that he appreciated the role played by PCB chief Zaka Ashraf’s in pushing the series through. The May and June meetings between Ashraf and Srinivasan led to the announcement of a schedule for the series, which is sandwiched between England’s Test and ODI tour of India. In September, Ashraf met with the-then Indian foreign minister, SM Krishna, in Islamabad and two months later, the Indian high commissioner to Pakistan travelled to Lahore for discussions on visa issues with PCB officials.

Sussex defeated after run outs

ScorecardSussex’s Clydesdale Bank 40 challenge suffered a setback when Derbyshire cruised to a six-wicket victory with 14 balls to spare under the Derby floodlights.A top-order collapse saw Sussex bowled out for 167 in 37.2 overs, with seamer Tim Groenewald taking 3 for 32, and although Derbyshire lost Australian batsman Usman Khawaja to the opening ball of their innings, skipper Wayne Madsen’s first limited-overs fifty of the season and Dan Redfern’s 49 sealed victory.Madsen was unbeaten on 64 out of Derbyshire’s 170 for 4 as Sussex tasted defeat in the competition for the first time to stay in second place, a point behind leaders Warwickshire who they play at Hove next week.Sussex started well after they were put in but went off the rails in the face of some tight spin bowling from Wes Durston and David Wainwright, who celebrated a four-year contract and his Derbyshire cap by conceding only 26 runs from his eight overs.Durston went for just 37 and picked up the wickets of Ed Joyce, lbw sweeping, and Matt Machan who was stumped trying to break the shackles after scoring 20 from 32 balls.Murray Goodwin was involved in two needless run-outs which accounted for Mike Yardy and Joe Gatting in the space of three balls in the 19th over and when Ben Brown sliced a lofted drive at Wainwright to mid-off, Sussex had lost four wickets in as many overs to slide to 95 for six.Goodwin and Kirk Wernars restored some order by adding 50 but it took them 12 overs and Groenewald returned to beat Goodwin’s attempted drive and blow away the tail as Sussex were dismissed in the 38th over.Derbyshire’s chase started atrociously when Khawaja was run out without facing and his opening partner Chesney Hughes followed in the sixth over when he was pinned in front by Amjad Khan.Durston played some handsome cover drives to score 30 off 35 balls before he was caught behind down the leg side with the score on 55, and another wicket at that stage would have given Sussex a chance of defending their modest total. But Derbyshire knew they only had to bat sensibly to win the game and Madsen and Redfern did just that to take the game away from the visitors. With no danger of any interruption from the weather, the pair were content to work the ball into the gaps although Madsen drove Monty Panesar over long-on for the only six of the match in the 28th over before sweeping the England spinner for four.He reached his fifty off 87 balls and Redfern, who was also awarded his cap before the game, looked set to make his first one-day half-century of the summer but was stumped off Chris Nash which ended a stand of 96 in 20 overs. But the wicket came too late for Sussex and fittingly it was Madsen who drove Yardy for the winning boundary to complete Derbyshire’s fourth victory in Group C.

A 201-run partnership helped England Women to a 14th consecutive victory and a 3-0 series whitewash over New Zealand Women in Lincoln. Sarah Taylor’s unbeaten 109 was the mainstay of the stand as England chased 221 inside 43 overs to win by six wickets. It was Taylor’s fourth ODI century and came in with England at 15 for 2, having lost captain Charlotte Edwards and Tamsin Beaumont both lbw to Rachel Candy for single-figure scores. Taylor, who became the youngest female to 2,000 international runs in the second ODI, struck nine fours in her 113-ball innings. Her partnership with Lydia Greenway came in 36.3 overs and guided England to another easy victory.Greenway also faced 113 balls, making 84 with six fours before being stumped with her side within a stroke of the target. It was left to Taylor to score the winning runs and keep England’s unbeaten run going, which stretches back to July 2011.New Zealand had looked on course to set a competitive total but having been 202 for 5, their innings collapsed for 18 more runs. After a solid start, Laura Marsh struck to remove Katey Martin for 38, then picked up wickets in successive overs, removing Suzie Bates and Anna Peterson on her way to 3 for 28.Amy Satterthwaite tried to rebuild the innings with a 69-ball 58 but after she fell to Arran Brindle, Danni Wyatt’s 3 for 36 ran through the lower order and England were faced with only a modest chase.”It was a fantastic team performance today,” Sarah Taylor said. “The bowlers bowled well to restrict New Zealand and I was delighted to contribute and get a big score. I think that was one of my best innings.”Lydia batted really well. It was great to share a partnership with her on such a fantastic wicket. Once we got in we just looked accumulate and build the runs. We knew that if we just batted the runs would come.”
