Wolves: Podence interesting Tottenham

This could be a long and arduous summer for Wolverhampton Wanderers if they face intense interest from elsewhere for their star players.

The Old Gold are restricted when it comes to finances and they will need to sell before they can significantly invest in the playing staff.

What’s the word?

Ruben Neves continues to attract the interest of Arsenal as his departure from Wolves look pretty inevitable this summer.

However, Bruno Lage also faces a battle to keep flashy winger Adama Traore at the club. Pedro Neto has been linked with a mega £50m move to Manchester United and Rui Patricio has already headed to pastures new.

There could also be a departure for Daniel Podence who is now fielding interest from Tottenham, according to reports.

Former Wolves boss Nuno Santo is now in charge of the Lilywhites and is preparing to make a proposal to his old employers in a bid to sign Podence.

The attacker currently earns £52k-per-week and is valued at £22.5m via Transfermarkt.

Get rid

If Spurs are genuinely interested in signing Podence then Wolves must be incredibly open to concluding a deal.

Their spending power is limited and if they can receive a tidy fee for a bit-part player they should grasp it with both hands.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-ceballos-zinchenko-euros-felix-lage” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Wolves have already signed Trincao this summer and with his ability to play in a variety of forward areas, it could limit Podence’s overall game time.

The 25-year-old struggled last season, missing over 100 days of action due to a variety of injuries. He missed the conclusion of the campaign with a groin problem while sustaining thigh and shoulder issues in 2020/21.

Consequently, the Portuguese scored just three goals in 25 outings for the Old Gold.

Once dubbed a “phenomenal” player by Wolves reporter Tim Spiers, Podence was actually more of a frustration last term.

Of course, he struggled to find form due to his injuries but he feels like an expendable player in a window where the club needs to raise vital funds.

Rather than selling Neves or Traore, they should look to generate cash by selling Podence to Tottenham in the coming weeks.

A tricky and wily player on his day, he should, unfortunately, have no future under Lage at Molineux.

Combine his injuries and fitness with the arrival of Trincao and he looks rather doomed in the Midlands.

Worcestershire still on course to sign Allan Donald despite UCBSA doubts

Reports coming from South Africa that Worcestershire’s attempts to sign Allan Donald as a replacement for their overseas player Andy Bichel had run into trouble have been dismissed by the county as no more than a technical hitch. Worcestershire have gone through the right channels, but the information had not permeated to all levels of the United Cricket Board of South Africa’s administration.Bichel was selected for Australia’s proposed series against Pakistan in June and Donald has been signed on a short-term contract as his replacement. However, Gerald Majola, chief executive of the UCBSA, admitted that he had been unaware of the situation with Worcestershire until the announcement that Donald had signed for them.”There is a very specific clause in the players contracts that precludes them from working for another employer without permission, and Allan hasn’t spoken to me,” Majola said.He was also unaware that Donald has been turning out for Birmingham League club Knowle and Dorridge as a professional. “That’s news to me. He should have sought permission,” Majola said before conceding that it is not out of the question that the bowler might yet play county cricket.”If he asks permission then I will consult the national physiotherapist Craig Smith to get a report on his physical fitness. If Craig says he is fit then we would consider releasing him.”The main concern of the South Africans is that Donald, at 36 years of age, should conserve his energies to spearhead their attack in the World Cup that takes place on home soil in 2003. Similar concerns were expressed when captain Shaun Pollock was allowed to play for Warwickshire this season.Speaking to CricInfo, Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton is confident that the matter will be resolved shortly. “We have done everything we were supposed to do and expect confirmation of Allan’s availability at any time now.”It appears that Donald himself spoke to the new chairman of selectors, Omar Henry, while the club contacted Brian Basson, the director of cricket operations in South Africa. However, a breakdown in communications at the UCBSA meant that the chief executive was not fully apprised of the situation when making his comments.

West Ham fans flock to Yarmolenko claim

According to a report by Turkish newspaper Fotomac, via Sport Witness, Super Lig giants Galatasaray could open official talks to sign West Ham United forward Andriy Yarmolenko.

Yarmolenko barely featured for the Hammers over 2020/2021 due to a combination of injury problems and falling further down the pecking order.

Indeed, the Ukrainian finished last campaign with just one Premier League start – with his main contributions coming in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup competitions early on.

Nevertheless, he continues to be a drain on the wage books at West Ham and their highest earner overall – taking home a reported £115,000-per-week.

As a result, with this news emerging of Galatasaray’s intentions, many Hammers fans are eager to see Yarmolenko leave the London Stadium three years after his arrival.

Flocking to the development on social media, Irons supporters dropped a variety of takes on the 94-cap international – find all of their best ones down below.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa wants six new signings

Leeds United fans should be buzzing with the latest transfer update to emerge from Thorp Arch.

What’s the story?

Having ended the Premier League season in superb style – Marcelo Bielsa’s side racked up four wins on the bounce to finish in the top-half of the table – all eyes will be on how the Whites go about strengthening their squad.

And, according to Football Insider, they’re intent on really refreshing the team with a host of additions.

A Leeds source has claimed that not only will the club step up their efforts to sign Club Brugge starlet Noa Lang, but “Marcelo Bielsa has also sanctioned the club to work on deals for a new left-back, specialist central midfield cover for Kalvin Phillips, a back-up goalkeeper and potentially a centre-forward who can compete with Patrick Bamford.”

Fans will be buzzing

If Bielsa gets his way, and there should be no reason for him not to given the kind of success he has enjoyed at Elland Road over the years, then Leeds fans could be looking at the arrivals of six new signings this summer.

What will please Whites supporters the most is the areas in which they are reportedly planning on strengthening too.

Bringing in that much-needed cover for England international Kalvin Phillips will no doubt be crucial, especially given how they performed without him in the team – in the nine Premier League games that he missed, they won just twice.

And, adding in a striker to compliment Patrick Bamford will ease the goal-scoring burden on the striker and allow Bielsa to give him a rest here or there to ensure he doesn’t get burned out.

After the success of the last summer transfer window, which saw the likes of Raphinha and Diego Llorente join the club among others, Leeds fans will be relishing the prospect of Bielsa and Victor Orta getting their heads together to find these six new players for their squad.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has dropped a major Leeds United update…

Law, Nash stage heroic fightback for Queensland

Felicity Shea04-Mar-2001Queensland has staged an heroic fightback against New South Wales late on the third day of the teams’ Pura Cup match here at the Sydney Cricket Ground, endingthe day on 4/154 in its second innings after earlier being 4/57 and in distinct danger of suffering an innings defeat.Captain Stuart Law (58*) combined with debutant Brendan Nash (36*) to construct a solid partnership of ninety-eight runs in the latter stages of the afternoon, dashing any hopes New South Wales had of despatching the Bulls in short time. Queensland trailed, instead, by only sixty-eight runs overall by stumps.Earlier in the day, New South Wales was the team again in control, unleashing an in-form Nathan Bracken (4/44) on the Bulls, leaving them unable to avert thefollow-on as they crumbled to be all out for 276 before tea. In Bracken’s twenty-one overs, he demonstrated the composure and confidence that he has probablygained from his recent international call-up and clearly exhibited some of the ruthless characteristics inherent in the national side. The morning session was characterised by the Bulls’ unsuccessful efforts to try and build a meaningful partnership; just as they seemed to be getting into a rhythm, their work would be routed by an efficient Blues bowler.New South Wales off spinner Anthony Clark opened the day well and continued the good form he found in the closing overs yesterday, targeting the key wicket ofskipper Stuart Law. It wasn’t till the fifty-first over, New South Wales gained the break they were looking for, when captain Law (27) was stumped after stumblingout of his crease attempting a sweep at a wide ball from Clark. It was an unfortunate mistake, but even more difficult to believe was Law’s fit of pique at being given out by Umpire Hair. On his way back to the pavilion, hecrashed out the middle stump with his bat, but has been fortunate to escape without penalty on this occasion.Coming back from lunch, Queensland was 6/222 with Andrew Bichel (18) and Wade Seccombe (27) charged with the task of guiding their team out of danger.Bichel failed to help hold the lower order together, though, and was sent back to the pavilion by Bracken with a slick yorker that bounced off his foot and onto thebails in the ninety-seventh over. Seccombe fell just four overs later, another victim of Bracken’s precise line and length.Another three overs and Adam Dale (10) was taken, caught by Michael Bevan off the bowling of MacGill. And just one further over on came the end of the inningswhen Joe Dawes (4) went for four runs, also the prey of an unstoppable Bracken. If Bracken (0/18) was the wrecker of the first innings, then Mark Higgs (2/20) has become the terror of the second after claiming two wickets in rapid succession toconsign Queensland to potential disaster at a scoreline of 4/57 by the fifteenth over of the innings. The two spin bowlers, Higgs and Clark (2/19), have worked superbly in tandem, maintaining an excellent attack with Clark’s right arm off spin complementing Higgs’left arm wrist spin. A wearing pitch has certainly helped them, serving up the possibility of some amazing turn on deliveries at times. For the fifteen overs that theybowled together, Clark and Higgs certainly made the most of the conditions.Queensland had begun the second innings needing to play with greater resolve and, by as early as the fifth over, matters looked encouraging. Openers Jerry Casselland Jimmy Maher were in sparkling touch and rapidly took the score beyond thirty during this period. When Maher (21) was given out caught behind in the eleventh over – to a rather questionable call by Umpire Brandon – the Bulls were 1/51. Maher was movingforward and trying to sweep the ball but seemed to miss it entirely. It appeared to come off the pad, and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin caught it and initially made anattempt at a stumping. But, after a few seconds’ thought, he then changed course to join in on an appeal from other fieldsmen stationed around the bat for a caughtbehind verdict. Maher was not happy about the decision and television replays showed why.Just four overs later, Clark claimed his second scalp for the innings when Cassell (31) was caught by Higgs, standing at silly mid off. Higgs then took the ball at theother end and promptly claimed Martin Love (2) and Andrew Symonds (0) within the space of an over, leaving the Bulls in a very tight spot at 4/57.It was then that Law and Love came to the rescue, albeit that the Bulls are still far from out of the woods yet. Particularly as they still need those extra sixty-eightruns to force New South Wales to bat again.

06-Jan-2001Hosts Bengal secured five points by virtue of their first innings leadto take the third position in the zone as their Ranji Trophy matchagainst Bihar ended in a tame draw at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata onSaturday. Bengal with 18 points finished behind Orissa (29) and Assam(19).Resuming at 16 for one after being forced to follow on, Bihar openerNikhilesh Ranjan struck an unbeaten 126 and put on a valuable 159-runsecond wicket partnership with captain Rajiv Kumar (82) to guide theteam to safety.Despite being under pressure, the Bihar batsmen rose to the task andbatted confidently to reach 302 for three before play was called offwithout the completion of the mandatory overs. The two overnight batsmen Nikhilesh Ranjan and Rajiv Kumar neverlooked in trouble at all on a good batting track as they negotiatedthe pacemen and spinners with ease to thwart Bengal’s advantage.Ranjan struck as many as 19 boundaries during his long 371-minute stayat the crease while Kumar slammed ten boundaries during his knockwhich lasted 216 minutes.Tariqur Rehman, who joined the action after Kumar’s departure, alsogave good support to Ranjan with a patient 32. Sunil Kumar (52 notout) was the other notable contributor for the visitors. With veteran spinner Utpal Chatterjee not bowling after the lunchbreak due to an injury and Laxmi Ratan Shukla not taking the field ondisciplinary grounds, the Bengal bowling lacked sting.

Lage edges closer to Wolves job

Wolves are one step closer to appointing Bruno Lage as their next manager, according to reports…

What’s the word?

The Telegraph’s John Percy claims the 45-year-old is on the verge of being announced as Nuno Santo’s successor after he attended a work permit hearing on Wednesday afternoon.

Fosun are determined to have him in place in time for pre-season, though there are still some issues to finalise, such as his contract.

It’s understood that the former Benfica boss was recommended by super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has close ties with the Midlands outfit through his agency, Gestifute.

No hurdles are anticipated, so it’s only a matter of time until Lage is in the dugout at Molineux.

Got their man

This will come as exciting and encouraging news to Fosun, who have evidently got their no.1 target.

Percy suggests that, despite Mendes’ influence and other potential candidates on a shortlist, the Portuguese was still their first choice to take over from Nuno.

Perhaps surprisingly, Lage does have some experience of the Premier League as he was assistant to Carlos Carvalhal during the 2017/18 season, which saw them relegated after he took over in December from Sheffield Wednesday.

The Portuguese followed him to the Welsh outfit from Yorkshire before going onto become a manager himself at Benfica B.

Lage was then promoted to the senior side, where he won 67.1% of all his matches in charge, clinching the Primeira Liga title in 2018/19 as well as the Coach of the Year award.

That season, his Benfica side scored a whopping 103 goals, which earned him a reputation of being an exciting and attack-minded manager – something that should appear vastly different to Nuno’s final season in charge as no side above 16th place scored fewer goals than Wolves this term.

There is another benefit to Lage’s appointment as he’ll inherit a large Portuguese contingent of players, of course, with no fewer than seven members of the current squad being born there.

All in all, the news that Lage has received his work permit will be a massive boost for Fosun. They can now go full steam ahead with their plans to turn around their fortunes in the top-flight.

AND in other news, Imagine him and Lage: Fosun can seal dream duo by signing “exciting” talisman…

Villa’s Dean Smith must unleash Louie Barry

With reports linking Aston Villa with a summer swoop for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, Dean Smith might be more advised to unleash a player who he already has at his disposal: Louie Barry.

The 17-year-old was the talk of the town earlier this season when he scored in Villa’s FA Cup defeat to Liverpool, but that break-out moment has yet to result in any more action for first-team, with the striker yet to make the match-day squad in the Premier League.

The lack of senior action has seen Lee Hendrie raise his concerns about the way Smith has failed to use him, and urged the Villa boss to reconsider.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “I’m really disappointed that he hasn’t featured, not even really on the bench since that Liverpool game with the fabulous goal that he scored. He reminds me of a young Michael Owen in the fact that he’s very slight, small, but he’s very quick, and I’m surprised that he hasn’t been given a bit more of a chance since that game.

“I just feel that he should now be getting into the first-team squad, being on the bench and getting thrown on for the last 20 minutes, relieving a bit of pressure, just because he’s got that pace that he can burn off.”

Barry appears to have all the ability to become a real star for Villa for now and the future, with club’s academy manager, Mark Harrison, saying: “He is still a very young man but as he’s developed, he’s always been one player that you always recognise as having outstanding attributes. He’s got a fantastic mentality, he’s desperate to do well for this football club.

“As a player, his real strength is his work rate, he’s constantly pressurising the opposition when they are on the ball, looking to create opportunities for himself to nick the ball high up the pitch. He is quick, and looks to play off the shoulders of the defenders, always looking for space behind them to be able to run into.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/villa-dean-smith-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-premier-league-buendia-berge-mcneil-trezeguet-villa-park” title=”Read the latest Villa transfer rumours and news!”]

Rather than spending a massive amount of money on someone like Abraham, surely Smith could give that opportunity to Barry and see if he rises to the occasion.

Young players just need that one chance to impress, and Barry has already shown in that FA Cup match against Liverpool that he’s got an enormous amount of potential.

It’s time Smith recognises that.

Meanwhile, Dean Smith is making a major mistake over this talent…
