Leeds set to open contract renewal talks with Kemar Roofe

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United are set to open renewal talks with Kemar Roofe in order to fend off growing interest in his services, Football Insider reports.

What’s the word?

Marcelo Bielsa has improved Leeds significantly and the Peacocks have established themselves amongst the early-season favourites for promotion, although this naturally means that interest in their best players is rising.

Amongst those turning heads is forward Kemar Roofe, who scored four goals and contributed two assists in Leeds’ opening six Championship matches before being sidelined with an injury – missing the last four matches as a result.

Interest in the 25-year-old is rising and Leeds are keen to secure his future as he edges into the final 18 months of his current deal, according to Football Insider, as the club prepare to sit down with the forward to discuss a new contract.

A necessary boost?

It does not take a genius to identify that Leeds have struggled in Roofe’s absence, as the Peacocks have won just one of their four matches without the striker in their side, subsequently opening the door for early title rivals West Brom and Middlesbrough.

Roofe is currently edging towards a return from his injury absence, which could come after October’s international break, and a new contract could provide a new lease of life into a forward who is looking to maintain his stellar start to the season.

Having scored 11 goals last season, Roofe is already well on his way to surpassing that tally and a new deal is well deserved for a player signed from Oxford United in 2016.

Newcastle United fans fed up as club opt to postpone Longstaff’s loan

Every summer like clockwork, Newcastle United fans experience a frustrating few months in the transfer window.

Two seasons in a row, club owner Mike Ashley has promised that all funds generated by the club will be handed to manager Rafael Benitez for the transfer kitty.

Once again, spending has been at a minimum, with Martin Dubravka signing a permanent deal, Ki Sung-yeung joining on a free and Kenedy returning on another loan from Chelsea.

Numerous names have been linked with moves to St James’ Park over the last few weeks, but done deals are few and far between.

On Wednesday, The Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder provided a piece of transfer news for the fans, but it was not warmly welcomed by all.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255847″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Newcastle’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

The reporter confirmed that young midfielder Sean Longstaff has had his proposed loan move to Portsmouth postponed, indicating that he could be given a chance in the first team.

Some fans were delighted with this news, while others saw it as a sign that the club are struggling to bring in new players.

Man United fans shocked at £50m price tag for Nemanja Matic

According to reports in The Mirror, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will allow midfielder Nemanja Matic to join Manchester United this summer, but they must pay £50m to do so.

Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is keen to sign a new defensive midfielder this summer and he has already had a bid of £35m for the 28-year-old rejected, according to The Mirror.

The Blues wouldn’t normally allow one of their players to join a direct rival, but The Mirror adds that Abramovich is willing to sanction a move as part of a goodwill gesture to the player for his service, but that it will cost £50m to get the Serbia international.

United supporters were quick to have their say on the rumour via social media, with the majority unable to believe the “bonkers” and “ludicrous” fee they could end up paying for Matic, while others said they would prefer to offer £60m for Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier considering he is five years younger.

Sutton’s incredible victory over Leeds United in pictures

The FA Cup fourth round has been incredibly kind to us this weekend as we witnessed a wealth of surprising results. After Lincoln City defeated Championship leaders Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday, today saw Sutton United look to take another scalp.

The Non-league outfit excelled on their big day and stunned Garry Monk’s in-form side, resulting in the FA Cup fifth round featuring two non-league sides for the first-time since the inception of the Football League.

Sutton will look ahead to tomorrow night’s fifth-round draw dreaming of another glamour tie, with the possibility of facing giants like Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea.

Captain James Collins’ secured the victory with a second-half penalty and sent the home supporters ballistic. We all love a good cup upset and we’ve gone through the game moment-by-moment to bring the match as it happened, solely in pictures.

Garry Monk has earned plenty of plaudits this season for the performances of his Leeds United side but he faced a huge challenge today, coming up against Sutton United Paul Doswell- who is extremely superstitious and had a coach take his side to the game, even though they were a minute down the road.

He was also pictured vaping on the sidelines. If anything shows the difference between professional football in the non-league, it’s that!

Disallowed goal

The home crowd were riled-up early in the game as Roarie Deacon tucked home after just six minutes. It gave Leeds an insight into what they could expect from the remainder of the match and replays showed the decision was perhaps a little unfair.

It showed the neutrals we had a game on our hands though and that was exactly the case.

Penalty

A mix-up in the Leeds United defence gave the minnows the opening they craved just eight minutes into the second-half, when Lewie Coyle committed the offence. The spot-kick came to captain Jamie Collins, who played for Havant & Waterlooville against Liverpool previously.

He needed nerves of steel but, fortunately, he had that.

Man of the moment

Wearing the armband, Jamie Collins stepped-up and dispatched the opening goal with ease.

Sutton fans could really dream now as their side had taken the lead against promotion contenders Leeds United. The home side had over half an hour to keep their Championship opponents at bay and there was still a lot of work to do but you could see the belief oozing out of the side.

Cup-set

At the final whistle, Sutton went crazy after a tremendous accomplishment. Overcoming AFC Wimbledon in round three was an achievement in itself but this game will go down as the greatest day in Sutton’s history- although their potential draw next round could get even better.

Man City is the perfect destination for the new Special One

The speculation continues to rise around the future of Pep Guardiola, and naturally everyone wants a piece.

After the Bayern Munich manager told the world that he would be stepping down as manager of the Bavarian club at the end of the season, his name was thrown up as a possible candidate to replace any manager under a little bit of pressure at any top club, and even some managers not under pressure.

Naturally enough he’s been touted to replace Jose Mourinho at Chelsea in the long term – at least that’s a job that’s available this summer. It seems fair enough that the rumours would focus on Manchester United too – after all, Louis van Gaal is under mounting pressure, and his style of play installed at Old Trafford does lend itself to Guardiola’s preferred approach, even if the Spanish coach does make it seem much sexier.

[ffc-gal cat=”manchester-city” no=”5″]

But speculation around Manchester City is greatest, even if Manuel Pellegrini isn’t really in an awful position this season and under normal circumstances, wouldn’t face the sack. But when Pep is available, these are not normal circumstances. Even Arsene Wenger could see himself replaced by the special Catalonian. But, as Jurgen Klopp points out, “’If this rumour is as well-tuned as all the other transfer rumours here then Pep will go somewhere else completely.”

This is modern football. The speculation and the readiness to chop the head off a fairly successful manager at the slightest provocation is rife. That’s just the way it is these days. Money is so important (that’s not a jibe at football as such, money is just that important in our society) and that makes success so important. Clubs need trophies in order to win more trophies and attract the best players.

And Pep Guardiola pretty much guarantees success as a manager. His five league titles out of six entered speaks for itself, but it’s also true that Pep, as a manager, has only ever been knocked out before the semi-final stage in any competition once (an away goals defeat to Sevilla in the Copa del Rey last 16 in 2010).

Clearly Pep is a special coach. Any team would want him, and it looks like every team is going mad to sign a man who isn’t likely to spend more than three years in charge of their club. The longevity of the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger looks like a thing of the past.

But appointing a manager like Guardiola doesn’t simply mean success for three years and then fading into nothing. Barcelona have shown us that life post-Pep can be very rewarding still.

When Guardiola left Barcelona, it was after he realised that his players didn’t need his intense supervision and precision coaching in order to play the type of game that won them every every competition they entered in 2009.

WANT MORE? >> Man City transfer news | Latest transfer news

Now that he’s leaving Bayern Munich, it seems that maybe he’s worried that his services are no longer needed. The players are capable of doing it for themselves, and now it’s time for a new challenge.

It might also be a case of throwing his cap over the wall – Bayern have never won the Champions League under Pep, so this is now his last chance and he must make it count. Throwing your cap over the wall means you have to jump over and follow it, he has no choice now.

For a club like Manchester City, bringing Pep into the club would be the best thing they could do. Even though Pellegrini is a wonderful manager, Pep would create the dynasty that City crave.

The set-up of the club is such that the arrival of a manager who is so adept at putting his seal on a club and giving it a footballing identity mean Pep could be creating a squad who can win trophies with ease even after his departure.

The money and the academy situation at City is perfect for Pep, and the arrival of Guardiola would be the icing on the cake. Despite all of the speculation and the clamour, Pep is still one of the best the world has ever seen. And if the world has moved on to a new era of keeping managers only for a few years, then Pep is the ideal man for the new era.

Liverpool player ratings vs Aston Villa: Trent Alexander-Arnold is a passing master! Reds' stand-in captain shines as Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah score in dominant win

Jurgen Klopp's side continued their unbeaten start to the Premier League season with an emphatic victory on Merseyside

Liverpool's strong start to the season continued on Sunday as the Reds ran out 3-0 winners over Aston Villa. Jurgen Klopp's side dominated from kick-off at Anfield, and really could have won by more as they yet again proved their potential title credentials.

The Reds were ahead inside four minutes as Dominik Szoboszlai drilled in a first-time finish from 20 yards for his first goal since his summer arrival from RB Leipzig after a corner evaded everyone and landed at his feet. A Matty Cash own goal then doubled Liverpool's advantages, as the defender was helpless to avoid diverting the ball home from close range after Darwin Nunez hit the post.

Nunez, fresh off his double against Newcastle last time out, really should have scored himself on that occasion, and he soon hit the woodwork again as he chipped a shot against the crossbar before poking a volley wide with the goal gaping early in the second period.

The Uruguay international did provide an assist, however, as he flicked Andrew Robertson's corner into Mohamed Salah's path at the far post for the in-demand Egyptian to tap home and seal a third successive victory that was only tainted by a potential injury suffered by Trent Alexander-Arnold late on.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Alisson Becker (7/10):

Didn't have much to do but showed good concentration to keep out a Cash header early in the second half.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (9/10):

Delivered a passing masterclass, both from his usual right-back spot and when he drifted centrally. Seemed to thrive as captain, and only an injury concern meant he failed to see out the 90 minutes.

    Joel Matip (5/10):

A little careless in possession at times and missed a gilt-edged chance to make it 3-0 before the half-hour mark.

    Joe Gomez (7/10):

Another impressive display from the England international after a strong showing off the bench last week. Doing all he can to earn more opportunities.

    Andrew Robertson (8/10):

Combined superbly with Diaz down the left and seems to be coping better with the demands of knowing when to stay and when to go as Alexander-Arnold cuts inside on the opposite flank.

    Midfield

    Dominik Szoboszlai (8/10):

Superb first-time strike opened the scoring and was an energetic presence throughout, making some incisive runs into the half-space between the forwards.

    Alexis Mac Allister (7/10):

Back in the No.6 position after Endo was left out, the Argentine swept up well and won plenty of tackles.

    Curtis Jones (6/10):

Solid but unspectacular. Kept the Reds ticking over as the left-hand No.8.

    Attack

    Mohamed Salah (8/10):

Combined excellently with Nunez and pressed relentlessly from the front. Deserved his tap-in goal that secured the points.

    Darwin Nunez (7/10):

Will wonder how he didn't score after hitting the woodwork twice and volleying wide from close-range. Pace caused Villa's high line problems all day and flicked header assisted Salah's strike.

    Luis Diaz (8/10):

Electric at times, particularly in the first half. Replaced shortly after the hour mark, but only to give him minutes off rather than due to poor performance.

    Subs & Manager

    Cody Gakpo (6/10):

Unable to properly impact the game in his 25-minute cameo.

    Diogo Jota (6/10):

Couple of nice dribbles but not too much of note.

    Harvey Elliott (6/10):

Showed good energy in midfield after replacing Jones.

    Jarell Quansah (6/10):

Solid after coming on for the injured Alexander-Arnold.

    Wataru Endo (N/A):

On for Mac Allister in the final five minutes.

    Jurgen Klopp (7/10):

Appreciated he could cope without Endo and gave Szoboszlai the freedom to express himself. Decision to start Nunez also worked, even if the Uruguayan didn't get himself on the scoresheet.

Jayasuriya back to lead selection panel

Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed the return of Sanath Jayasuriya as chief selector, little more than a year since he stepped down from the role. The board had expressed a desire to reinstall Jayasuriya as chief selector for several weeks but was awaiting the sports minister’s approval, which it has now received. The new selection panel takes office on May 1 and will serve for two years. The other members of the four-person panel are former wicketkeeper-batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana, who was once Jayasuriya’s opening partner; former fast bowler Eric Upashantha, who has worked in a Jayasuriya-led committee in the past; and former offspinner Ranjith Madurasinghe, who is a member of the present selection committee under Aravinda de Silva. Jayasuriya had also joined de Silva’s panel in the weeks preceding his appointment “in order to provide continuity”, in SLC secretary Mohan de Silva’s words. The Test squad to England is likely to be selected by the de Silva-led committee, as the team is due to depart on May 4. However, Jayasuriya’s panel is set to take over in time for when the limited-overs squads for the tour are named.Jayasuriya previously held the post from January 2013 to March 2015 and developed a reputation for being a hands-on selector, as he was often seen around the team during tours and training sessions. During that period, Sri Lanka won a World T20 and a Test series in England, both in 2014, before exiting the 2015 World Cup in the quarter-finals. It was Jayasuriya’s committee that formalised Angelo Mathews’ ascension to the Test and ODI captaincy. However, the period was also beset by public disagreements between Jayasuriya and senior players, who have now retired.Beyond the trip to England, Sri Lanka have other major series on their horizon in the coming year. They are scheduled to host Australia in July and August, before departing for a full tour of South Africa in December.

TABELA
> Veja classificação e simulador do Brasileirão clicando aqui
